Active harmonic filter (AHF)

Power Quality
The power quality in an electrical system is maintained when 1) the utility provides sinusoidal
voltage at rated magnitude and rated frequency to its consumers, and, 2) consumers draw sinusoidal
current in-phase with the input supply voltage. The utility can assure power quality from their side
only when its consumers do meet the power quality standard (IEEE 519-1992 and/or IEEE 519-2014).

Harmonic and Reactive Currents

The power electronic devices (such as, Variable Frequency Drives, Phase controlled rectifiers,
Choppers etc.) and other frequently changing electrical loads in industries draw 1) active current at
rated frequency, 2) reactive current at rated frequency, and 3) produce harmonic currents at higher
frequencies.

Effects of Harmonic and Reactive Currents

Among the three parts of the current, active current accounts to actual work done in the process
while the other two are just circulating and do not contribute to work done. Reactive current leads
to poor plant power factors and attracts penalty from the utility. On the other hand, presence of
harmonic current cause adverse effects on plant and degrades energy efficiency of the plant as well
as utility. The adverse effects on the plant due higher harmonic levels could be 1) increased heating
of transformers, motors and cables, 2) reduced plant efficiency, 3) protective devices malfunctioning
leading to increased down time, 4) reduced life span of costly and sensitive plant equipment due to
increased stresses etc.

These effects of harmonics are much more intense on upstream utility equipments (such as
transmission lines, transformers, substations) in terms of poor efficiency, overheating, frequent
failures, and reduced lifetime. In order to enhance overall system reliability and efficiency, utilities
are mandating the consumers to comply with IEEE standards on power quality. Failing to meet these
stringent standards, utilities started to impose large penalties and even going for supply
disconnection in some cases.

Active Harmonic Filter (AHF)

At this juncture, we proudly announce first of its product line-up “Active Harmonic Filter (AHF)” to
cater the present industrial needs. AHF is a high-speed power electronic device that is connected in
parallel to the plant (or power electronic loads) in order to 1) achieve compliance to stringent IEEE
Standards IEEE 519-1992 and IEEE519-2014 and, 2) maintain unity power factor operation at all
times. The AHF continuously monitor plant currents and operate in closed-loop to actively cancel the
harmonic and reactive currents entirely or up to the levels set by the user.

AHF is developed by group of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi alumni, who have handful of
R&D experience in the fields of power electronics, power quality improvement, renewable energy
conversion systems and electrical drive systems. All the members have been involved in several
collaborative research projects with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA.
All the founding members have research findings, which got published in prestigious IEEE journals
while the some already hods doctoral degrees in electrical engineering.

Sizing of AHF FOR A PLANT

Calculating harmonic and reactive currents of a plant
A properly sized Active harmonic filter (AHF) is capable to compensate both harmonic and
fundamental reactive currents drawn by the plant. The following procedure can be used to compute
the AHF rating required in a plant based on different scenarios. The three basic parameters required
for sizing the AHF are:

1) Total RMS current drawn by the plant at full load: 𝐼𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 in Amperes
2) Total current harmonic distortion at full load: 𝑇𝐻𝐷𝑖 in absolute value (not in percentage)
3) Fundamental power factor: 𝑃𝐹 (either leading or lagging)

Once the above three parameters are available, the total harmonic current (𝐼𝐻) being drawn by the
plant can be calculated as,
𝐼𝐻=𝐼𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑√𝑇𝐻𝐷𝑖21+𝑇𝐻𝐷𝑖2 𝐴𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑠

Whereas, the total fundamental reactive current (𝐼𝑄) being drawn by the plant can be calculated
from,
𝐼𝑄=𝐼𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑√1−𝑇𝐻𝐷𝑖2√1−𝑃𝐹2 𝐴𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑠

AHF rating according to requirement:

The rms current rating of the AHF (𝐼𝐹) can be selected from the below table:

Purpose of AHF selection AHF Rating in Amperes

For compensating harmonic currents only 𝐼𝐹=𝐼𝐻

Compliant to standards IEEE519-1992 and
IEEE519-2014

To achieve unity power factor operation only 𝐼𝐹=𝐼𝑄

For maximizing power factor incentive only

For compensating harmonic currents and to 𝐼𝐹=√𝐼𝐻2+𝐼𝑄2

achieve unity power factor operation
simultaneously
Compliant to standards IEEE519-1992 and
IEEE519-2014 along with maximizing power
factor incentive
Note: The sizing procedure is valid for plants whose THDi values below 40%. In case of higher THDi
values, contact the design support team
