Industrial Design Problem (IDP) Round
Guidelines:
Problem Description:
Water is crucial for sustaining life on Earth, serving as a vital component in biological
processes and supporting crop growth. It is essential for ecosystem, human health, industrial
and economic development. Water, like other renewable resources is facing severe pollution
due to which a serious call exists for cleanliness and sanitation in our households.
Our community faces a critical challenge regarding clean water and sanitation due to the
prevalence of chromium contamination in our local water bodies. The hexavalent chromium
(Cr (VI)), originating from industrial waste, poses a severe threat to aquatic life, adversely
impacting the ecosystem and jeopardizing the portability and safety of the water for human
consumption and other essential uses.
As an engineer hired by the Municipal Corporation of your city, conceptualize and develop a
device or equipment that effectively addresses the removal of chromium contaminants from
our local water bodies, while abiding to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6
(UNSDG-6), which is “Ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and
sanitation to all.”
Problem Statement-2:
Problem Description:
DJT and Co. is a well-known powerhouse in the textile industry. With huge profits every
year, it uses its massive resources in building a sustainable economy, one that doesn’t load
the planet and its ecosystem. This, coupled with its manufacture of fabrics and dyes in-house,
has led to the brand of DJT and Co. becoming a household name. However, during
experimentation with a version of the methylene blue dye (MB), workers observed that
during the degradation of the dye, a multitude of effluents, such as sulphates, nitrates, weak
organic acids and other chemicals, are released that pollute water bodies upon mixing. The
traditional method of illuminating the dye with visible light also proved ineffective. This
alarmed the higher-ups, as pollution of the environment goes against the ethos of the
company.
As a chemical consultant hired by the firm, develop a green catalyst that efficiently degrades
the specified dye with the least number of effluents produced, while preventing any burden
on the financial resources and risk to the workforce of the company and adhering to the
United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 12 (UNSDG-12) of “Responsible
Consumption and Production.”
