Yatai, a mobile food cart, is peculiar to Fukuoka. These yatais are set up early in the evening along the sidewalks, sometimes clustered in designated areas
(Tenjin, Nakasu, and Nagahama). Various kinds of street food are sold — ramen (try the fried ramen!), hotpot, oden, tempura, and yakitori among others.
Eat Hakata Ramen at the Original Ichiran. If you were to have just one dish in Fukuoka City, then it should be hakata ramen. Not only is it one of Japan’s most
popular types of ramen, but it originated right here in Fukuoka.
Try Motsunabe. Like hakata ramen, motsunabe is a regional Fukuoka dish and one of the best things you can have in the city. It’s a type of nabemono or
Japanese hot pot dish made with beef or pork offal cooked in a shallow pot on your table with cabbage, garlic chives, and champon noodles.
Motsunabe is typically made with innards like beef intestine and pork tripe that are simmered in a soup base seasoned with soy sauce, garlic, and chili pepper. It’s
absolutely delicious and one of the best dishes you can have in winter.
There are many motsunabe restaurants in Fukuoka City, but one of the best is Hakata Motsunabe Yamanaka.
Fukuoka Tower is literally one of the top tourist attractions in Fukuoka City. Standing at 234 meters tall (768 ft) on the shores of Hakata Bay, it’s the tallest seaside
tower in Japan.
Located 123 meters (404 ft) off the ground, Fukuoka Tower features an observation deck that offers 360° views of the city and bay. If you like getting bird’s eye
views of the city, then this is the best place to do it in Fukuoka.
Other free perches include the observation terrace on the rooftop floor of Hakata Station and ACROS Fukuoka, with its striking 50,000-plant-strong outdoor “Step
Garden.” Visitors can ascend a series of staircases from the 2nd to the 14th floor and marvel at the variety of plant species. An observation deck at the top floor
also operates on weekends and public holidays.
Hot Springs
Harazuru Onsen is one of the Fukuoka's largest hot spring towns, with 14 unique onsen ryokan (Japanese inns) and attracting over 800,000 visitors annually.
This is a rapidly growing must-see destination in Fukuoka with rejuvenating baths and relaxing experiences for travellers.
Harazuru Onsen provides access to both alkaline and sulphur baths, a rare combination seldom found in a single location. This is precisely why Harazuru Onsen
has earned the esteemed title of "The Hot Spring of Double Beauty." Women, in particular, are drawn to this haven of relaxation and rejuvenation.
And it's not just the hot spring that brings visitors to Harazuru Onsen, but the region hosts a variety of seasonal activities throughout the year. Try traditional
cormorant fishing, participate in herb festivals or go fruit picking.
Hakata Onsen, located within Fukuoka City, is the perfect urban hot spring experience. You will basically have the tranquillity of traditional onsens with the
convenience and energy of a bustling city. Sound perfect, right?
Situated in the heart of Fukuoka, this onsen is easily accessible and provides a perfect retreat for relaxation and rejuvenation amidst your city explorations. Do
consider it for when you want to stay in Fukuoka.
The mineral-rich waters of Hakata Onsen are said to have therapeutic properties, helping to alleviate stress, muscle pain, and fatigue, while also promoting overall
well-being. Visitors can enjoy a variety of indoor and outdoor baths, as well as private baths.
Hakata Onsen's central location offers easy access to a wide range of attractions, including historical sites, shopping areas, and local cuisine.
Futsukaichi Onsen is a renowned hot springs area with a rich history spanning over 1,300 years. Located in Fukuoka Prefecture, it provides visitors with easy
access to various sightseeing spots in the region. From Futsukaichi Onsen, travellers can easily visit the Kyushu National Museum, Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine,
and other historical sites, making it an excellent base for exploring the area.
The spring quality at Futsukaichi Onsen is characterized as an alkaline. The high-temperature water, rich in radon, has a pleasant sulphur scent and a smooth
texture. This hot spring is well-known for its "beauty water" qualities, as it is believed to be beneficial for the skin.
Futsukaichi Onsen provides you with a blissful experience, allowing you to warm your body and mind while soaking in the wonderful hot springs that have been
gushing out continuously since ancient times.
If you’d like to spend the day soaking in a hot spring, then there are a number of onsen towns you can visit like Yufuin, Beppu, and Kurokawa Onsen.
Kushida Shrine is a top Fukuoka attraction and one of its most important Shinto shrines. It was founded in 757 and regarded by locals as the guardian temple of
the city.
In July of every year, Kushida Shrine hosts the Yamakasa Gion Matsuri which is the biggest festival in Fukuoka. On the festival’s last day, hundreds of men from
seven teams representing Hakata’s seven neighborhoods race while carrying giant floats called kazariyama.
Each of these floats is decorated with elaborate figures and scenes and can measure up to 10 meters tall and weigh over a ton. The largest of these floats are put
on display at Kushida Shrine for the rest of the year.
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
This extensive Shinto shrine stretches over 1000 hectares and said to be the burial site of Michizane (also called Tenjin), a Heian scholar and politician. The way
to the entrance of the shrine complex is lined with several stalls and shops. The whole property covers the torii gate entrance, the main shrine, auxiliary shrine, two
ponds, two bridges, an ox statue, museums, and other structures. The shrine grounds are also home to about 6,000 ume (plum) trees.
About 1 km south of Kushida Shrine is Chikuzen Sumiyoshi. Also known as Sumiyoshi Shrine, it’s a Japanese Shinto shrine that was once regarded as the most
important shrine of the Chikuzen area (northern part of Fukuoka prefecture).
Built over 1,800 years ago, Chikuzen Sumiyoshi is the first of nearly 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines in Japan. Sumiyoshi shrines are built in dedication to the Sumiyoshi
sajin or the three Shinto gods of the sea and sailing.
Highlights at Chikuzen Sumiyoshi include the main hall, which is designated as a National Treasure of Japan, and the copper axe and sword which are regarded
as important cultural properties of Fukuoka.
Operation Hour: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM (Monday – Saturday); 9:00 AM – 6:30 PM (Sundays and Holidays; March-November).
Board the Nishitetsu Bus from Hakataeki-mae A to Noko Tosenba (aka Noko Dosenba). From there, take the ferry to Nokonoshima Ferry Terminal. From the
island ferry terminal, board the Nishitetsu bus bound for the island park.
Fare: ¥430 (bus to Noko Tosenba); ¥230 (ferry to Nokonoshima Island); ¥230 (bus to the flower park)
Travel Time: 42 minutes (Hakataeki-mae to ferry terminal); 10 minutes (ferry ride to Nokonoshina Island); 13 minutes (bus to the flower park)
The park measures about 4 km (2.5 miles) from one end to the other making it an ideal area to explore on bicycle. You can rent bicycles at the gate for JPY 500
for three hours or JPY 700 for the day.
If you visit between mid-March and early autumn, then you’ll find millions of flowers blooming throughout different parts of the park. Cherry blossoms bloom in
spring while other flowers like tulips, roses, hydrangeas, and sunflowers will be visible at different times of the year.
Uminonakamichi Seaside Park can be reached by metro or ferry from central Fukuoka. If you like aquariums, then you can visit Marine World Uminonakamichi on
the same trip. It’s located near the park just a short walk from Uminonakamichi Station.
If you’re in the mood to go shopping, then Canal City Hakata and Tenjin Underground Shopping Center are two of the best places to drop some yen in Fukuoka
City.
Called a “city within the city”, Canal City Hakata is the largest shopping and entertainment complex in Fukuoka. It covers 2.5 million sq ft of space and boasts over
250 shops and restaurants built around a central fountain and canal area.
Canal City is Fukuoka’s crown jewel for fashion and lifestyle goods. With an actual 180m (591ft) canal running through it, this chic five-floor shopping mall is a full
entertainment and dining complex housing some of Japan’s most well-known stores including Muji, Uniqlo and Francfranc, along with a host of international
brands, such as Adidas, Levi’s, Gap and Disney, to appease any shopaholic.
When in need of a breather, pop over to neighboring Kushida Shrine, home of the annual Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival in July. One of the towering festival
floats is on display year-round.
Planning tip: Enjoy the fountain displays at the mall’s Sun Plaza every half hour starting at 10am. In the evenings, marvel at the 3D projection mapping show Canal
Aqua Panorama on the vast screen.
In contrast, Tenjin Chikagai is a 600-meter network of underground passageways that’s home to over 150 small shops and restaurants. It’s located about a
kilometer west of Canal City Hakata so you can easily visit both on the same day.
For a sweet treat, be sure to try the arcade’s specialty red bean soup with grilled mochi cakes at Kawabata Zenzai Hiroba (open weekends and public holidays
only) and gaze at the Yamakasa festival float inside.
Planning tip: To experience the street in full swing, Kawabata Shopping Street is best visited from midday onward as most shops don’t open until late morning.
