HOW TO BECOME AN AIRLINE PILOT

To become an Airline Pilot in the US,
you first need to earn your Private
Pilot Certificate, Instrument Rating,
Commercial Pilot Certificate, and in some
cases Multi Engine Rating. To earn these
ratings, you will need to pass FAA written
exams and Check Rides in an airplane.
Typically a Check Ride is conducted by an
FAA examiner, however some L3Harris
Flight Academy courses hold Self
Examining Authority. This means our own
“Check Instructors” can conduct FAA
Check Rides!

After earning these certificates and
ratings, you are officially qualified to be
paid to fly twin engine aircraft!
The FAA requires Commercial Pilots to
have at least 1500 hours of flight time
before obtaining their Airline Transport
Pilot Certificate and flying at an airline.

At L3Harris all cadets that graduate from
the Professional Pilot Program or Airline
Pilot Track are guaranteed an interview to
become a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI),
so you can earn money while you build
flight hours and pass your knowledge to
the next generation of cadets.

making this one of the quickest ways to
reach 1500 hours!
After earning 1500 hours of flight time,
you are eligible to become an Airline
Transport Pilot and work as a First
Officer! If your goal is to fly for Major
Airline, the most common first step is to

Our Maintenance department has been awarded the FAA
Diamond Award of Excellence for the 18th consecutive year.
The Diamond Award recognizes L3Harris’ ongoing commitment
to aircraft maintenance and training excellence, and is the
FAA’s highest award for aviation maintenance technicians and
employers.
In 2019, L3Harris signed a deal with Piper Aircraft to
supply as many as 240 new aircraft across the training sites.
The new fleet will be equipped with the latest technology
used on commercial jets, providing an up-to-date training
environment for pilots of the future as they prepare for their
goal of joining a commercial airline.

The Professional Pilot Program (PPP)
is designed for those who aim to work
for an airline.
PROFESSIONAL PILOT PROGRAM
The Professional Pilot Program (PPP) is designed for those who
aim to work for an airline. This program includes
training in a multi-engine aircraft.
Our PPP can be completed in as little as 15 months and takes
cadets through the following certificates and ratings:
> Private Pilot Certificate
> Instrument Rating
> Commercial Pilot Single-Engine Certificate
> Commercial Multi-Engine Add-on Rating
> Certified Flight Instructor Certificate
Upon successful completion of the Professional Pilot
Program, L3Harris Flight Academy will guarantee students
an interview to potentially be employed as a Certified Flight
Instructor. Hiring is based on multiple factors, including the
candidate’s past training performance, communication and
teaching skills, and the needs of the company, as well as
successful completion of L3Harris Flight Academy Certified
Flight Instructor Standardization Course.

TRANSFER CREDIT
Transfer Credit Students with prior flying experience may be
eligible for credit toward the hourly requirement established for
each FAA pilot certificate or rating. Credit that may be assigned
is governed by Federal Aviation Regulations 141.77(b). L3Harris
Flight Academy will accept transfer credit on a case-by-case
basis. Students requesting a review of any flight time, ground
school, or exams for the possibility of transfer must notify their
admissions representative. All requests for transfer credit
must be submitted for review no later than two weeks prior to
the course start date; no exceptions made. Professional Pilot
Program students must complete a minimum of 25% of the
program at L3Harris Flight Academy.

FEDERAL FUNDING SCHOLARSHIPS PRIVATE AND STATE LOANS HOW TO APPLY

L3Harris is one of the few standalone flight schools that allows
qualified cadets to utilize Federal Financial Aid to fund their
training. Federal Financial Aid, or Title IV Funding, is federally
funded aid that can cover up to 100% of the cost of flight
training, when applying for our Professional Pilot Program and
those who qualify.
L3Harris Flight Academy is approved and accredited to offer the
following types of Federal Funding:
> Federal Pell Grants
> Federal Direct Stafford Loan Program
> Federal Direct PLUS Loan – For Parents
Note: To apply for Federal student aid, students must complete
the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
