➢ Course Description
The purpose of English Language Skills A is to
improve student's language via focusing on improving the
reading skill. Through reading a variety of passages and
subjects, students will be able to enrich their vocabulary.
During the course, students will have to examine several
reading comprehension exercises which will improve their
speed reading strategies, written responses, discussions, and
reflections. After exploring and examining the entire reading
process, students will become more confident, independent,
effective and efficient readers.
English language skills Level 1A is designed for students
who are placed in levelA / A1 on an entry assessment test at
Al-Quds University. It provides students with the basic
command of English by integrating the main language skills;
listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course has
adopted Evolve 2 as a textbook. During this course, students
will be presented with basic tools such as videos,
vocabulary, life stories, grammar, and everyday
conversations in addition to real-life experiences of real
students.
This course enables learners to develop their academic and
language skills of both lower and higher order of critical
thinking skills that provide students with the tools they will
need to formulate their own opinions and express
themselves effectively in speaking with confidence. This
course aims to develop the learners' skills and responsibility
with the tools they need to achieve basic language skills that
prepare them for entering the next level of the English
language.

➢ Course Core Objectives


1. Develop students speaking and listening skills through
receptive and productive pronunciation
2. Activate prior knowledge
3. Inductive grammar learning and further, use it in a well-
scaffolded, personalized speaking tasks.
4. Model and contextualize useful fixed expressions for
managing a particular situation.
5. Improve studentt's higher and lower orders of critical
thinking skills
6. Activate pair and group work (think, pair and share).
7. Improve students writing and reading skills.

➢ Course Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
Once you have completed this course, you will be able to
demonstrate the following skills:
1- Identify the topic and purpose of a reading sample
2- Distinguish between main ideas and supporting details.
3- Locate specific information.
4- Distinguish between stated and implied ideas; make
inferences.
5- Draw conclusions and predict outcomes.
6- Recognize the structure and organization of paragraphs.
7- Use strategies to think critically about readings.
8- Use various reading aids such as the dictionary.
9- Use appropriate technology to enhance reading
comprehension, reading speed, and vocabulary
development.
10- Demonstrate techniques for improving vocabulary such
as using contextual clues, word parts, and other reading
devices.

➢ Requirements & Class Conduct:


Students will be expected to:
1. arrive on time.
2. turn
off all electronic devices before class begins, use
mobile phones only when teacher asks so,
3. refrainfrom distracting activities like talking to your
neighbor, interrupt students’ speech, etc.
4. bring your text book/ papers to class and a notebook for
writing, taking notes every day,
5. be an active participant in class and a good listener to the
teacher and to classmates,
6. complete all reading assignments before class, and come
to class prepared to engage in the class discussions,
7. be ready for your presentations on the due date,
(exceptions will only be made if extreme circumstances
exist with evidence),
8. be ready for quizzes during every class.

The following material will be covered during Fall


Semester:
Each unit in Evolve 2 consists five lessons that help
students achieve specific learning objectives. Each lesson
focuses on one objective using one or more language
skill/s.
1- Lesson One and Two present and practice the unit
vocabulary and grammar in context, helping students
discover language rules for themselves.
2- Lesson Three is built around a functional dialogue that
models and contextualize useful fixed expressions for
managing a particular situation.
3- Lesson Four is a combined skills lesson based around an
ongoing reading or listening text which ends with a
practical writing task.
4- Lesson Five Time to speak is an entire lesson dedicated
to developing speaking skills. Students work on
collaborative, immersive tasks that involve information
sharing and decision making.
