Hooke’s Law Investigation Teacher Notes

Safety Information
Ensure that clamp stands are secured to the bench with G-clamps to avoid injury from falling
equipment.

Investigation Notes
Students will investigate how the force applied to a spring affects its extension.
The method is provided on the Hooke’s Law Method Sheet.
The differentiated Hooke’s Law Investigation Worksheet provides space for students to record
their results, then use these to calculate the spring constant of the spring used. For the LA
worksheet, the extension measurements are in centimetres, so no conversion is needed. The HA
worksheet asks students to convert their measurements to metres before calculating the spring
constant. This step is required at key stage 4.
The Hooke’s Law Evaluation Worksheet provides prompts for students to write an evaluation
for the investigation. The Evaluation Answer Sheet includes some possible discussion points
you could use to support students with their evaluation.
