WHAT’S NEW
Stay at Home
It was summer vacation. Benj and Blake had already their plans on what
to do for the entire season but because of the new normal situation, all their
plans have changed.
Those were not the usual days in summer for the two boys. Every
summer, their family used to go on vacation to the places they're never been to.
They were supposed to go to Boracay Island to have their five-day vacation. All
were already set. Tickets were already paid as well as their hotel
accommodation. Everybody was excited! All the bags were packed, from their
swimwear up to their foods. But suddenly, their parents decided not to go.
"Why can't we go mother," asked Benj to her mom. "We can't go my son
because all of the flights were canceled due to this global pandemic," mother
replied. "Covid19 is contagious so we should stay at home for our safety,"
father added.
Although they were sad because of the cancelled vacation, Benj and
Blake looked for ways on how to make the season memorable and enjoyable for
them. They called up their cousin Brent and invited him to their house. But Brent
had an allergy at that time. He had a frequent cough and the doctor advised
him to take a rest and eat nutritious foods to get well. "Get well soon Kuya,"
uttered Benj. "Thank you, Benj. Just enjoy with Blake and take good care of
yourselves," replied Brent with a soft voice.
Since they could not go out for swimming, they beat the heat by taking a
plunge into their inflatable pool that their parents bought for them. While they
were in the pool, their parents also prepared a delicious meal and healthy
snacks like fruits and vegetables for them.
After swimming, they helped their father in watering their vegetable plants
in the backyard. Those were their daily routines for the entire season.
Even though they just stayed at home for the whole summer vacation, but
they were still happy because they have spent quality time with their family.

WHAT IS IT
In the passage “Stay at Home” that you have read, there are health words.
Borrowed words are adopted words from one language and incorporated to another
language without translating them.
What do you think is the best way to get the meaning of these words?
One way of getting or inferring the meaning of words is using context clues.
A. Context clues are hints that the author gives to help define a difficult word. The clue
may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow
to the preceding sentence.
1. Synonym
A synonym, or word with the same meaning, is used in the sentence.
example:
Covid19 is highly contagious, it is a transmittable disease.
2. Antonym
A word or group of words that has the opposite meaning reveals the meaning of an
unknown term.
example:
3. Explanation
The unknown word is explained within the sentence or in a sentence immediately
preceding.
example:
Covid19 has been declared global pandemic, a disease which is prevalent in
the whole world.
4. Example
Specific examples are used to define the term.
3
example:
Allergic reactions of a person having colds include sneezing, having watery
eyes, and runny and clogged nose.
Affixes are additional elements placed at the beginning or end of a root, stem, or
word, or in the body of a word, to modify its meaning.
In the previous lesson you already learn the two basic types of affixes, the prefix and
suffix.
Examples of prefix:
re-, un-, ir-, anti-, pre-, post-, mono-, mal-
Suffix is a letter or group of letters added at the end of a word to make a new word.
Examples of suffix:
-ation, -tion, -ness, -ish, -able, -al
Study the tables below. This will help you understand the meaning of some health words
with affixes.
