Part A. Planning for IELTS Test


What is IELTS?
IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency
across the globe. Conducting one million tests globally, IELTS is the world’s most popular
English testing system. Visit the IELTS website at http://www.ielts.org.'

How many kinds of tests are there?


There are 3 kinds of IELTS tests offered by British Council Nepal: IELTS, IELTS UKVI and IELTS
LIFE SKILLS
1. IELTS (General and Academic)
IELTS has two versions – Academic and General Training. All candidates take the same
Listening and Speaking tests but different Reading and Writing tests.

Which version should I do?


Read the explanation below of the Academic and General Training tests, and then contact
the organization or institution to which you are applying to find out what it requires. Please
note that you must know which version to take when you complete the online application
form.

1.1 IELTS Academic


The Academic test is for those who want to study at a tertiary level in an English-speaking
country.

1.2 IELTS General


The General Training test is for those who want to do work experience or training programs,
secondary school or migrate to an English-speaking country.

2. IELTS UKVI (General and Academic)

2.1 IELTS Academic for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)


This test is for test takers wishing to study in the UK below degree level or others who are
required to take a SELT test for a direct application to UK Visas and Immigration. The test
involves Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
2.2 IELTS General Training for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)
This test is for test takers wishing to migrate to the UK and for those wishing to train or
study below degree level, who need to make a direct application to UK Visas and
Immigration. The test involves: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

3. IELTS Life Skills A1 & B1

3.1 IELTS Life Skills A1


This test is for those who need to prove their English speaking and listening skills as part of
their application to UK Visas and Immigration for Family, Spouse or Partner visa.
The A1 level is within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR),
the equivalent to ESOL Entry 1 on the National Qualification Framework (NQF). The test
involves Speaking and Listening

3.2 IELTS Life Skills B1


This test is for those who need to prove their English speaking and listening skills as part of
their application to UK Visas and Immigration for citizenship/settlement visa. The B1 level is
within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and is the
equivalent to ESOL Entry 3 on the National Qualification Framework (NQF). The test involves
Speaking and Listening

4. Preparation Materials
Road to IELTS – 30 hrs. Online course, absolutely free!
Road to IELTS, developed by British Council, is an online preparatory resource which
includes 30 hours of intensive work on listening, reading, writing and speaking, helping you
to develop your skills to the levels necessary to succeed in both the Academic and General
Training modules.

Road to IELTS can be accessed any time and from anywhere, with an internet connection.
You can practice all modules under the same timed conditions as they would in the actual
exam. In the Speaking section, sample videos take you through each stage of the speaking
test providing models of good and not so good performances and giving you opportunities
to analyse different interview techniques. After completing the practice questions, you can
view the correct answers, see your percentage score and compare this to the average
performance of other participants in Nepal. You can repeat the exercise in order to improve
your answers. At any given time, Road to IELTS has 3 active themes and these are changed
every quarter.

Log on to https://ielts.britishcouncil.org/R2IHome.aspx and login using the email address


that you used to register for your IELTS test and your IELTS Reference Number which can be
found in your Confirmation Email. When entering your IELTS Reference Number ensure that
it is exactly as shown in your Confirmation Email, including the dashes, e.g. NP004-xxxxxx-
xxxx. You can access Road to IELTS from the day you receive your Confirmation Email until 7
days after your IELTS test date.

Note: You can only access the Road to IELTS if your application has been approved and
paid for in full.

Part B. How to register for IELTS General or IELTS Academic?

Registration Process:

 Log on to http://www.britishcouncil.org.np/exam/ielts
 On the page displayed click on ‘Register for IELTS now’. This will open the IELTS
Online Registration system.
 Now select Test Date, Town/City and Module from the left pane and read the
details mentioned on the right pane
 After reading the details and selecting the appropriate options click ‘Find’.
 The next page will display the available test dates with their modules. Click ‘Apply’
on the right side of the date which best suits you
 Complete the online application form.
 Deposit IELTS fee NPR 16,950 at the Cash Counter - British Council, Kathmandu.
 Submit payment slip at the Reception, British Council, Kathmandu
 Payment deadline is 6 working days from the date of registration or 13 days before
the exam date whichever is earliest.

How to register for IELTS UKVI or IELTS Life Skills?


 Log on to http://www.britishcouncil.org.np/exam/ielts-uk-visa-immigration
 Scroll down to IELTS Academic for UKVI or IELTS General Training for UKVI
 Choose the required module and go to the section ‘book now’
 On the page displayed, read the information carefully and click on ‘Start Now’ and
follow the steps to complete your online form

Step 1: Choose a test type.


Step 2: Select ‘location’ and ‘‘month’ from drop down options available and click
’Next’.
Step 3: View the availability of all the test dates at different test centres across the
selected location and select your preferred option by clicking ‘Apply’.
Step 4: Register for an account for an IELTS test by filling in the essential fields and
read the ‘Terms and Conditions’ for account registration. Tick the box to complete
this step.
Step 5: Log In to continue with your test registration.
Step 6: You will be able to view the details of your test at this step. Click on ‘Book
test’ to continue. If you would like to change your test details, click on ‘Select another
test’.
Step 7-9: You will be able to view your account registration information. Click
‘Continue’ to provide the other essential information in 3 steps.
Step 10: Confirm that you have read and accepted IELTS ‘Terms and Conditions’.
Step 11: Choose the payment method. Refer section B of this page to view the
acceptable payment methods at the centre.
Step 12: You will receive automated emails for your test date and payment
confirmation as you complete each step.
 Deposit fee:
o IELTS UKVI NPR 33,600, IELTS Life Skills NPR 25,200 at the Cash Counter -
British Council, Kathmandu.
 Submit payment slip at Submission Counter at Reception – British Council,
Kathmandu.
 Payment deadline is 5 working days from the date of registration.

What help is available for disabled candidates?

Test centres make every effort to cater for the special needs of disabled candidates. It is our
aim for all candidates to be assessed fairly and objectively. If you have a special need, talk to
your local test centre when registering. Centres may need three months to organise
arrangements.'

What if I need to postpone or cancel my application?

If you postpone or cancel your application more than 5 weeks before the test date, you will
receive a refund minus an administration charge. If you postpone or cancel within 5 weeks
of the test date, you will be charged the full fee unless you have a medical reason. If you
provide a medical certificate within 5 days of the test date, you will receive a refund minus
the local administrative cost.

Can I change my details?

Candidates have a chance to check and modify personal details (except passport number)
when they come for the speaking test. No modifications are allowed after that.
PART C. TEST DAY

TEST DAY
1. How long is the test
IELTS has four parts – Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes)
and Speaking (11–14 minutes). The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Listening,
Reading and Writing tests are done in one sitting. The Speaking test may be seven days
before or after the LRW tests.

2. Test Venue
Candidates will be informed about the test venue through SMS, two days before the test
date. You will be able to check the speaking and venue details online
https://ielts.britishcouncil.org/CandidateLogin.aspx 5 days before the test date.

3. Test City Change


Any candidate who would like to change their IELTS Test Venue must do so at least 5
working days before the registration closure date and will cost NPR 2000. Test City Change
request is subject to availability of seat(s) and approval by senior management.

4. Test Details
The Listening, Reading and Writing modules will take place on the exam day starting at
1300hrs. Please be present at the test venue at 1100 hrs for instructions and ID checks.
Please be informed that refreshments will not be provided during the waiting hour. No
candidate will be allowed into the exam hall after 1245 hrs.

If you arrive late then we will not be able to accommodate you for the test and you will
forfeit the whole exam fee.

The Speaking test may take place on the same day or up to seven days before or after the
other modules. You may check the speaking schedule online
https://ielts.britishcouncil.org/CandidateLogin.aspx 5 days before the written exam date.
Candidate will be informed well in advance if it is scheduled before the exam. You will have
to bring your original MRP Passport and a photocopy of it. Please make sure you are
present at least 20 minutes before your interview time to complete the registration
formalities. If you do not arrive by the designated time you will be marked absent and it
will not be possible for us to reschedule your speaking test.

Please do not bring valuables to the test venue. You will not be allowed to take into the hall
any items except your MRP passport and pencil/eraser/sharpener. Candidates are also not
allowed to wear wrist watches. Your bag and mobile phone will be stored at the entrance to
the hall. British Council is not responsible for any loss/damage.
5. Identification Requirements
Only a valid and original MRP passport will be accepted and all candidates appearing for the
IELTS test must bring their original MRP passport during the LRW and Speaking test days. In
addition to this, candidates are also requested to bring a photocopy of their passport on the
speaking test day.

Any candidate who does not bring their original MRP passport will not be allowed to sit for
the test. In addition to this, the exam fee will also be not refunded.

Candidates are also informed that the MRP passport presented during the test day will be
used as the primary source of identification and details such as date of birth, candidate
name and others will be entered according to this passport. British Council will not entertain
any request to change candidate details because the candidate has acquired a new passport
and modified the details in the new passport.

Candidates have a chance to check and modify personal details (except passport number)
when they come for the speaking test. No modifications are allowed after that.

What can I bring into the examination room?

Only pens, pencils and erasers. You must bring the passport/national identity card you used
on the IELTS Application Form to the test. You must leave everything else outside the
examination room. Mobile phones and pagers must be switched off and placed with
personal belongings in the area designated by the supervisor. If you do not switch off your
phone/pager or keep it on you, you will be disqualified.
PART D. TEST RESULTS

Additional TRF (ATRF)


If you need to send a TRF to an institution, we provide an Additional TRF (ATRF) service.
Please submit the following documents while requesting for an ATRF:
 Duly filled ATRF request form*
 Deposit slip evidencing that all applicable service and courier charges have been
made. The courier charge will vary depending on the destination country.
 Photocopy of the original TRF
Online ATRF can be sent to five different institutions free of cost. *we will provide an ATRF
request form upon request.

Replacement TRF (RTRF)


Candidates are informed that barring exceptional circumstances no RTRF is issued to
candidates. Hence candidates are requested to keep their test result forms carefully.

In a case where an Additional Test Report Form (ATRF) is required the following conditions
apply:
 If the result is required for university admission the new test result will be sent
directly to the concerned university. All applicable service and courier charges will
have to be paid by the candidate.
 If the candidate is immigrating to another country, s/he must present evidence of
the immigration application process in which case, the original Test Report Form will
be sent to the concerned embassy directly. All applicable service and courier charges
will be paid by the candidate.
 If the candidate has submitted his/her original TRF to an embassy or university and is
seeking an RTRF, then in such a case, the candidate must provide a letter from the
concerned embassy or university that they are in possession of the original TRF. All
applicable service and courier charges will have be paid by the candidate.
 No RTRF will be issued to the candidate in cases of loss, theft or damage due to
personal reasons or any reasons other than those mentioned above.

The following are the documents required to be submitted while requesting RTRF:
 Letter or other documents evidencing the circumstances (mentioned above) for
which the RTRF is required along with the application letter.
 Deposit slip evidencing that the service charge of NPR 3000 has been made.
 Photocopy of the original TRF and original Passport

British Council and Cambridge reserves the right to check the authenticity of the claim. In
case it is proven that the candidate has made a false claim to obtain an RTRF, then such
requests will be denied and reported to the concerned authority for further action.
Test Date Transfer/Refund

Candidates who seek to cancel their registration or transfer test dates within the five-week
period prior to the test date will only receive a refund or transfer the date, if they can satisfy
to the Administrator that their ability to sit the test has been affected by illness or serious
cause. The following are the documents required to be submitted while requesting for test
date transfer/refund:
 Duly filled Refund or Transfer form
 An application stating the reason
 Evidence or Proofs for the reason stated
Candidates are required to pay an administration fee of NPR 4250 both in case of refund
and test date transfer. Refund and Transfer Forms are available at our office and can also be
downloaded from our website http://www.britishcouncil.org.np/exam/ielts .

IELTS Results Online and Distribution


You will be able to preview your results online 13 day of the written examination after 2:00
PM.
Your IELTS results (also known as your Test Report Form) will be available on the 17th day,
from the date of the test, after 1600hrs from our Reception - British Council, Kathmandu.
Please bring your original passport when you come to collect your result

You will not be able to obtain your results over the phone, by email or by fax.

How to check online result:


 Go to ‘Take an exam’. Click on IELTS.
 On the IELTS page go to tab ‘Results’.
 Click on the blue highlighted ‘preview you results online’.
 On the next page enter the required details and click on ‘find’ button.
 Your result will be displayed.

Enquiry on Result (EOR)


Candidates wishing to request a re-mark of the results must complete an IELTS Enquiry on
Result (EOR) form and submit along with their original Test Report Form. The fee for EOR is
NPR 10,000. All enquiries must be made within four weeks of the result published day. The
fee for the Enquiry on Results service will be refunded should your overall score change as a
result of the re-marking. The Enquiry on Results Service can take up to eight weeks to
complete.
