Section—B (Essay Answer type questions)

 Answerallquestions: (5x8=40 Marks)

11. A) For the static equilibrium of the quick return mechanism shown in figure, find the
maximum input torque T2 required for a force of 250 N on the slider D. Angle θ is 105° and
the coefficient of friction is 0.15 for each sliding pair [8M]

OR
B) A racing car weighs 20 kN. It has a wheel base of 2 m, track width 1 m and height of C.G
300 mm above the ground level and lies midway between the front and rear axle. The engine
flywheel rotates at 3000 r.p.m. Clockwise when viewed from the front. The moment of inertia
of the flywheel is 4 kg-m2 and moment of inertia of each wheel is 3 kg-m 2. Find the reactions
between the wheels and the ground when the car takes a curve of 15 m radius towards right at
30 km/hr, taking into consideration the gyroscopic and the centrifugal effects. Each wheel
radius is 400 mm. [8M]

12. A) A differential band brake, as shown in figure below has an angle of contact of 225°.
The band has a compressed wovenlining and bears against a cast iron drum of 350 mm
diameter. The brake is to sustain a torque of 350 N-m and the coefficient of friction between
the band and the drum is 0.3. Find (i) The necessary force (P) for the clockwise and
anticlockwise rotation of the drum; and (ii) The value of ‘OA’ for the brake to be self
locking, when the drum rotates clockwise [8M]

OR
B) A punching machine is required to punch 20 mm diameter holes in 30 mm thick
plates having an ultimate shear stress of 300 N/mm 2. If 25 holes are to be punched per
minute and if punching operation requires one eighth of a second, find moment of inertia of
flywheel in order that the speed lies between 140 and 160 rpm. [8M]

13. A) i) What are the differences between Porter and Proell governors? [4M]
ii) Prove that the sensitiveness of a Proell governor is greater than that of a Porter
governor [4M]
OR
B) In a spring loaded governor of the Hartnell type, the mass of each ball is 1 kg, length of
vertical arm of the ball crank lever is 100 mm and that of the horizontal arm is 50 mm. The
distance of fulcrum of each bell crank lever is 80 mm from the axis of rotation of the
governor. The extreme radii of rotation of the balls are 75 mm and 112.5 mm. The maximum
equilibrium speed is 5 percent greater than the minimum equilibrium speed which is 360 rpm.
Find, neglecting obliquity of arms, initial compression of the spring and equilibrium speed
corresponding to the radius of rotation of 100 mm? [8M]

14. A) A rotating shaft carries four radial masses A = 8 kg, B = C = 6 kg, and D = 5 kg. The
mass centers are 30 mm, 40 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm respectively from the axis of the shaft.
The axial distance between the planes of rotation of A and B is 400 mm, and that between B
and C is 500 mm. The masses A and C are at right angles to each other. Find for a complete
balance, (a) the angle between the masses B and D from mass A, (b) the axial distance
between the planes of rotation of C and D, and (c) the magnitude of mass B.? [8M]

OR
B) i) Describe reasons in detail for partial balancing of reciprocating masses.[3M]
ii) A three cylinder radial engine driven by a common crank has the cylinders spaced at
120°. The stroke is 125 mm, length of the connecting rod 225 mm and the mass of the
reciprocating parts per cylinder is 2 kg. Calculate the primary and secondary forces at crank
shaft speed of 1200 r.p.m. [5M]

15. A) i) Discuss about the advantages and disadvantages of vibrations? [3M]

ii) The machine mounted on springs and fitted with a dashpot has a mass of 60 kg. There are
three springs, each of stiffness 12 N/mm. The amplitude of vibrations reduces from 45 to 8
mm in two complete oscillations. Assuming that the damping force varies as the velocity,
determine. i) The damping coefficient, ii) The ratio of frequencies of damped and un-damped
vibrations, iii) The periodic time of damped vibrations. [5M]
OR
B) (i) Discuss briefly about vibration isolation and transmissibility? [3M]
(ii) A shaft of 100 mm diameter and 1 m long is fixed at one end, and the other end
carries a flywheel of mass 1 tonne. The radius of gyration of the flywheel is 0.5 m. Find the
frequency of torsional vibrations, if the modulus of rigidity of the shaft material is 80 GN/m 2.
