Giving a speech

It is one thing to analyse a speech someone else delivered, and being

able to do so is a useful prerequisite for producing a speech yourself.
After weeks of analysing other people’s speeches, it is now your turn.

TASK:

• Choose a topic that interests you.

• Prepare a speech of 5-7 mins about the topic you have chosen.
You might want to take the following questions into consideration.

→ Who is being addressed?

(If you would like to create a situation other than the classroom,
please give a short introduction prior to your speech)

→ What is the occasion?

(Again, if you would like to create a situation other than the
classroom, please give a short introduction prior to your speech)

→ What is your topic?

→ What is the intention?

(Do you want to inform/persuade/... your audience? Do you want to agree/disagree/… with something?)

You should structure your speech as follows:

→ introduction: greet your audience
state your topic and its importance
catch your listeners’ attention
state your aim (outline the structure of your speech)
→ main part: develop your ideas (e.g. chronological order, from least to most important idea, arguments for
and against a certain idea, connect problems with solutions,…)
back up your ideas with background information
give examples to support your statements
divide your speech into clear units
link the parts of your speech
repeat and emphasise important ideas

remember what you learned about the function of stylistic devices

→ conclusion: come to a convincing end, e.g. short summary, quotation, call for action – appeal, look into
the future, rhetorical question, promise,…)
finish your speech clearly

• Be prepared to deliver your speech to the class on Mon (30 May) or Tue (31 May).
