Fluids and Lubricating Greases 1 Introduction

1 Introduction

1.1 Safety First

WARNING
Failure to Observe Safety Instructions
Can cause severe injury or death
u Read the Safety Manual before operating, doing maintenance, service, or repairs on
the machine.
u Know where the safety signs are on the equipment and understand their meanings.
u Obey all safety signs and warning statements.

All fluids and greases are essential parts of preventive maintenance. It is important to obey
the instruction in the machine-specific Operation and Maintenance manuals. A regular ser-
vice program must be designed depending on average operating conditions.
• Specific brand and type in this manual is not applicable to all situations, due to regional
availability, operating conditions, and continual development of improved products.
• Select correct quality and viscosity grade of fluids and greases to improve the effi-
ciency and extend the service life of components.
• Use fluids and greases that meet or exceed the requirement specifications.
• Never mix fluids and greases of a different type or grade.
• Discard used fluids and greases in accordance with local environmental regulations.
• Contact original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or refer to the OEM manuals for more
information, if necessary.
• Contact local Epiroc, if any doubt.

1.2 The Purpose of this Manual

The Fluids and Lubricating Greases manual is intended to:
• Provide information on the machine-specific fluid and grease types used in Epiroc
Nanjing factory.
• Provide information on the specification and standard of the fluids and greases.
This manual does not replace the necessary training that is required for the handling of the
machine and its related equipment.

1.3 Temperature Zones

All fluids pertain to an intended temperature zone. The figure below displays three different
temperature zones and their respective temperature range.

2.1 Hydraulic Oil

The quality of hydraulic oil is important to the satisfactory performance of any hydraulic
system. The oil serves as the power transmission medium, system coolant, and lubricant.

! NOTE: Use applicable hydraulic oil in accordance with the actual ambient temperature.

Temperature Zone Type Specification

Arctic Shell® Tellus S2 V 32 ISO VG: 32 / VI: 143

Normal Shell Tellus S2 V 46 ISO VG: 46 / VI: 143

Tropical Shell Tellus S2 V 68 ISO VG: 68 / VI: 105

2.2 Diesel Fuel

The quality of the diesel fuel is an important factor for the performance, the life time, and
the emission levels of the diesel engine.

NOTE: Only use diesel fuel that meets the requirements in the engine operation and
! maintenance manual. Contact OEM for up to date recommendations.

NOTE: Do not mix gasoline, alcohol, or gasohol with diesel fuel. This mixture can
! cause an explosion.

NOTE: Fuel which is stored must not have contact with the air, but must be stored in a
! closed vessel. The vessel must be approved for its purpose and must be clean.

Machine Specification

DM30 II T4 series Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel 0.0015% (≤15 ppm (mg/
kg)) sulfur

2.3 Engine Oil

The use of quality engine lubricating oils, combined with appropriate oil drain and filter
change intervals, is a critical factor in maintaining engine performance and durability.

! NOTE: Use applicable engine oil in accordance with the actual ambient temperature.

NOTE: Only use engine oil that meets the requirements in the engine operation and
! maintenance manual. Contact OEM for up to date recommendations.

Machine Type Specification

DM30 II series Mobil® Delvac 15W-40 API: CG-4, CF-4

2.4 Engine Coolant

Coolant is normally composed of three elements: water, glycol, and additives.

NOTE: Only use engine coolant that meets the requirements in the engine operation
! and maintenance manual. For more information of engine coolant, contact the engine
manufacturer or the local Epiroc technician.

! NOTE: Do not use sealing additives or soluble oils in the cooling system.

Machine Type Concentration

All machine types Shell® Antifreeze/Coolant (-45 50/50

°C)

2.5 Diesel Exhaust Fluid

NOTE: Only use diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) that is recommended in the engine opera-
! tion and maintenance manual.

NOTE: Do not add water to DEF. Store DEF in cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.
! Avoid storing DEF in direct sunlight. Optimum storage temperature is between -11°C
(12°F) and 30°C (86°F).
