PAUL PASTORAL LETTER

LEANING GOD’S PEOPLE CLOSER TO HIM

Pastoral Letters (Epistles)

 1 and 2 Timothy
 Titus

Various Leadership Roles in Paul’s Letters

 Pastor- in Greek word it’s called Poimen, refers to the shepherding role
of church leaders.
 Bishop- in Greek word it’s called Episkopos, often translated to
overseer or church leader.
 Elder- in Greek word it’s called Presbuteros, that means elder or leader.

Three Themes for Pastoral Qualifications

1. Godly Behavior- a leader must have a proven pattern of godly behavior.
- the Greek word Anegkletos, translated blameless or
above reproach, is used to describe the lifestyle of an elder.
2. Commitment to Family- marriage is a proving ground for leading the
church.
3. Selflessness- “The call to shepherd a church is a call to pour in others”

NOT SELFISH SELFLESS

• Not arrogant • Hospitable
• Not hot-tempered • Loving goodness
• Not a drunk • Sensible, righteous,
holy
• Not a bully • Self-controlled
• Not greedy • Holding to the
faithfulness of God’s
word.
