I. SOLVED EXAMPLES
Q.1 Solve the equation 6a – 4 = 20, and find the value of ‘a’:
Sol: 6a – 4 = 20
6a = 24
24
a= [Divided by 6 both sides]
6
a=4
(a) 𝟔𝐱 = 𝟐𝟒
(b) 𝟑𝐲 + 𝟏𝟎 = 𝟏
(a) The sum of four times a number and 5 gives a number five times of it.
Sol: (a)
Sum of 4x and 5 = 4x + 5
(b)
Q.4 9 times a number equals 45, write the statements as an equation and also find the solution.
Then, 9x =45
45
x= [Dividing both sides by 9]
9
x=5
Hence, the required number is 5.

Q.5 If 8 is added to a certain number, the result is 36. Find the number.
Then, x + 8 = 36
x = 28
Q.6 Find the solution set of x + 2 = 7, by using Trial and error method.
Sol: x+2=7
If x = 0, then 0 + 2 ≠ 7
If x = 1, then 1 + 2 ≠ 7
If x = 2, then 2 + 2 ≠ 7
If x = 3, then 3 + 2 ≠ 7
If x = 4, then 4 + 2 ≠ 7
If x = 5, then 5 + 2 = 7
Sol: k + 6 = 10
⇒ k = 10 − 6 = 4
Put k = 4 in 9k − 50, we get
(9 × 4) − 50 = 36 − 50 = −14
Thus, the value of 9k − 50 = −14
𝟓𝐲+𝟏
Q.8 Solve the equation and check the answers: =𝟕
𝟑
Sol: Given:
5y + 1
=7
3
⇒ 5y + 1 = 7 × 3 [Transposing 3 to RHS]
⇒ 5y + 1 = 21
⇒ 5y = 21 − 1 [Transposing 1 to RHS]
⇒ 5y = 20
20
⇒ y= [Transposing 5 to RHS]
5
⇒ y=4
Check: Put y = 4 in LHS
(5×4)+1 20+1 21
= = = 7 = RHS as required.

⇒ −6x = −12
Thus, the required number is 2.
Q.10 Check whether the value given in brackets is solution to the given equation or not: 𝐦 − 𝟖 = 𝟏𝟗 (𝐦 = 𝟐𝟕)
Sol: |x − 3| < 5
⇒ −5 < x − 3 < 5
⇒ −5 + 3 < x < 5 + 3
⇒ −2<x<8
Sol: 4x − 3 ≥ 17
Adding 3 on both sides, we get;
4x − 3 + 3 ≥ 17 + 3
4x ≥ 20
Dividing both sides by 4, we get;
4x 20
4
≥ 4
⇒ x ≥ 5.
