Data Privacy Overview
Please proceed to the next page to review the topics covered for lesson one of this module.
Data Privacy essentially means how a piece of personal information, or data, should be handled based on
its relative importance. Data Privacy is also a balance between each individual’s right to privacy and the
company’s need to process personal data in order to function.
How do you manage the “privacy” of this personal data? Also, what is
personal data?
Further explanation will be given in more detail in the upcoming pages, but in a nutshell, personal data is
about trust, confidentiality, protection, rights and control. It is about YOU!

Personal and Sensitive Data
To further understand Data Privacy, let’s take a closer look at personal and sensitive data.
PERSONAL DATA
Personal data, also known as Personally Identifiable Information (PII), is any information that
can be used to directly or indirectly identify an individual.
Sometimes the combination of data identifies a person. For example, a company name and
business address are in themselves not personal data but combined with the individual’s name
they become personal data.
Personal Data should always be kept confidential and secure and should be protected in
accordance with the internal standards and guidelines.
Few examples of Personal Data include:
A person's photo Name
Pension Bank account number
Telephone number Email address
Insurance information Salary
Performance data Social security number
It is important to know that due to the type of information that is being revealed, certain personal
data is categorized as "Sensitive Data".
Sensitive Data requires even further security measures and additional controls compared to those
for Personal Data.
Few examples of Sensitive Data include:
Health data and medical
Religious and philosophical beliefs
