Water pollution has been proven to give a lot of impact on marine life and the aquatic
environment. First, water pollution can decrease the amount of oxygen in the water, so
aquatic life cannot breathe smoothly and survive for a long time. For instance, factories
disposed of their toxic chemical and biological waste in the ocean which made the water
surface covered by pollutants such as oil spills and shipping. Consequently, the sunlight
could not reach the microorganisms to produce oxygen by photosynthesis thus
decreasing the oxygen level in the ocean. Second, water pollution increases exposure
to disease-causing pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and microorganisms resulting
in outbreaks of white pox and black band disease in corals. Namely, white pox caused
by Serratia marcescens that are usually found in the human gut and macroalgal has
been linked to water pollution leading to the black band disease. If black band disease
occurs it can cause the fish shelter to disappear. As a society, we should protect marine
life from extinction to ensure our future generations can experience seeing the actual
aquatic life. (181 words)
