CE 581 Behaviour of Reinforced Concrete Members and Structures

Homework 2- Due Date: November 24 2023

1- The 3 m long 30 cm thick cantilever slab shown below is subjected to a live load of 500
kg/m2 in addition to its dead load and the parapet load of 100 kg/m. For concrete grade C35
and steel grade S420, design the reinforcement required such that the maximum expected
crack width does not exceed 0.3 mm under service load (no load factors). Assume that all
the reinforcement is sufficiently embedded and the distance from outside the bar center is
30 mm and follow TS-500 Chapter 13 for flexural tensile strength.

p = 250 kg/m

30 cm

3m
LL = 500 kg/m2

2- Compute the moment curvature relationship for the column section shown in Homework 1
for N=0 kN using the Hognestad model (no distinction of confined or unconfined regions)
assuming εo = 0.002, and εcu = 0.0035 by considering points at a) first cracking, b) first yielding,
c) εctop = 0.0035. Employ a trilinear stress-strain relationship for reinforcing steel with fy = 420
MPa, fu=550 MPa, εsh = 0.005, εsu = 0.05 and fck = 30 MPa.

3- Write a moment curvature analysis program to solve problem 2 for axial loads of 0 , 10%,
30%, 50% of the axial column capacity. The program should adopt the layer by layer approach
and find neutral axis depth to establish force equilibrium for each imposed top fiber concrete
strain as we discussed in class. The program should allow the user to input geometry of the
section, number of concrete layers, number of steel layers.
You can use Hognestad parabola as your unconfined concrete model, Razvi Saatcioglu model
for the confined region and trilinear steel model.
i) Outline the input and output data structure of your program.
ii) Compare and comment on the comparison results with part 3.
iii) Submit your program.
