Worksheet – Factorial ANOVA follow-up tests

Question 1
Examine the following graphs and determine whether there are likely significant main
effects (main effect of IV1: A vs B AND/OR main effect of IV2: Red vs Blue) and/or a
significant interaction.

Question 2
Dr. Gates looked at the effects of frustration on the use of profanity by males and
females. Males and females were asked to write a lab report on computers in a lab, but
half the computers were set up to crash during the session while half of the computers
were not set up to crash. Three observers recorded the use of profanity by the
participants during the task.
a) If the hypothesis was that males and females use the same amount of profanity
when they are not frustrated and use different amounts when they are frustrated,
how would you split the data (horizontally or vertically)?

Crash?

Yes No

Male
Gender
Female

b) What would a potential hypothesis be that would result in splitting the data the
other way?

Question 3
In a study of the effects of smoking, active smokers were found to do better than
nonsmokers on a driving task but did worse than nonsmokers on a cognitive task.
However, over all three tasks (the third was pattern recognition and the groups were not
different on that) active smokers did not differ from nonsmokers on performance.
The SPSS output got lost but the interaction was significant. Use the means to
follow up the interaction based on the hypothesis that differences exist between
different types of tasks, specifically pattern recognition, driving, and a cognitive
task AND it depends on whether people smoke or not.

n = 8/group; MSw = 8.024; dfw = 42

Pattern
Driving Cognitive
Recognition

Non-smokers 9.33 9.00 13.63

Smokers 9.93 14.38 8.25

Question 4
People’s musical tastes tend to change as they get older. The data below examines
young adults (less than 40 years old) vs older adults (above 40 years old) that are split
into 3 music groups. One group listened to Fugazi, one to ABBA, and one to Garth
Brooks. Each person rated their liking of the music on a scale ranging from -100 (I hate
this foul music) through 0 (I am completely indifferent) to +100 (I love this music so
much I’m going to explode).
Hypotheses: ABBA will have the highest overall rating for likeability, followed by
Fugazi with Garth Brooks having the lowest rating. However, this will depend on
the age of the participant.

6
a) How should the data be split (vertically or horizontally)?

b) Run the appropriate follow-up tests for the hypotheses provided.

7
c) What is your overall conclusion?

Question 5
A study was done that found that women who completed a math test using a different
name performed better than those who completed the test using their own name. There
were no such effects for men. Use the SPSS output to answer the questions below.
Hypotheses: Males and females will differ in their math taking abilities. However,
this will depend on whether they are using their own name or a fake name.

a) How should the data be split (vertically or horizontally)?

9
b) Run the appropriate follow-up tests for the hypotheses provided.

10
c) What is your overall conclusion?

Question 6
There are reports of increases in injury related to playing Nintendo Wii. These injuries
were attributed mainly to muscle and tendon strains. A researcher hypothesized that a
stretching warm-up before playing Wii would help lower injuries, and that athletes would
be less susceptible to injuries because their regular activity makes them more flexible.
Use the SPSS output to answer the questions below.
Hypotheses: Warming up (stretching) before playing Wii will lead to fewer
injuries. This will depend on whether the participant is an athlete or not.

11
a) How should the data be split (vertically or horizontally)?

b) Run the appropriate follow-up tests for the hypotheses provided.

12
c) What is your overall conclusion?
