SSB Interview Procedure

The SSB Interview Procedure comprises of two stage selection process:
Stage I & Stage II. Candidates, those qualify the Stage I, only they are
permitted to appear for Stage II. The complete procedure is given
below:
Stage 1: This stage consists of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and
Picture Perception & Description Test (PP & DT). Stage 1 is a screening
test. Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of combined
performance in OIR Test and PP & DT.
Stage 2: This stage is conducted for four (4) days. Stage II consists of
Psychology Tests, Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO Tasks), Interview &
Conference.
Five Days SSB Selection Procedure

Day 0 (Reporting):
On this day, candidates have to report to the selection center.

Candidate’s original documents along with photocopies will be verified.
After the documents verification, Personal Information Questionnaire
(PIQ) Forms will be filled.
PIQ Forms: In this form, candidates have to fill their personal details
regarding educational profile, family background, etc. This form is very
important. It forms a base of questions, which might be put to an
aspirant at the individual interview round. The responses will be
analyzed by the psychologist of the Board.

Day 1 (Screening Test):
On the next day, it will be the Stage 1. Candidates have to give an

Intelligence Test (Verbal & Non-Verbal) & Picture Perception Test. In PP
test, slide (hazy or clear) is shown for 30 seconds & candidates have to
write the story. After finishing this test, the group discussion round
takes place. This sequence is commonly known as Picture Perception
and Discussion Test (PPDT).
Intelligence Test: It comprises of both; verbal and non-verbal

questions. It is a written test which includes multiple choice questions.
The time allotted to answering each question is 30 seconds.
Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PP & DT): This test includes
story writing and discussion. A picture will be shown to the candidates
for 30 seconds and candidates have to write a story based on the
picture in 3 minutes.
Day 2 (Psychology Tests):
It is a set written tests, organized by a Psychologist. In these tests,

candidates psychological suitability will be checked to be an officer.
These tests include:
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): It is called as Picture Story writing.

This test is very similar to PPDT. In this test, about 11 pictures will be
shown. Each picture will be displayed just for 30 seconds after that
candidates have to write a story based on the picture within 4 minutes.
After 4 minutes another picture will be displayed and the same
procedure will be followed till the last slide. The twelfth slide will be
blank where a candidate is supposed to write any story of their own
choice.

Word Association Test (WAT): It is the second psychological test of SSB

selection procedure. In this test, 60 words will be shown back to back
for a period of 50 seconds. Candidates have to write the first thought
that comes to their mind for those words.
Situation Reaction Test (SRT): In this test, candidates will get a booklet
with 60 situations written on it. Candidates have to write their
responses based on those 60 situations.
Self Description Test (SD): In this test, candidates have to write their
opinion about their parents, themselves, friends, teachers & others.
The time will be allotted 15 minutes.
Day 3 & Day 4 – Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO Tasks):
These Tests are interactive indoor and outdoor activities as a

combination of mental and physical work. These tests are as follows:
Group Discussion: In this round, a certain situation or topic (mostly

current affairs) is given to a group of candidates. They are expected to
discuss the various aspects of the issue. Group Task Officer observes
each candidate during the course of the group discussion.
Group Planning Exercise (Military Planning Exercise): In this round, a

model of real life practical circumstances is presented to a group of
applicants. They have to write their own plan of action for the
mentioned problem.
Progressive Group Tasks (PGT): In this round, the group of candidates

has to cross some obstacles with the help of supporting materials such
as rope, plank, wood log etc.

Half Group Tasks: This round is same as PGT but the numbers of group
members will half. Candidates get more chance to show their potential.
Individual Obstacles: In this round, candidates are required to attempt

10 obstacles individually.
Group Obstacles Race or Snake Race: In this round, all group members
will compete to the other groups. Candidates are required to cross
certain obstacles with the snake-like rope.
Command Task: In this task, an aspirant will be a commander. He will

be required to cross some obstacles with the help of 2-3 subordinates.
Lecturette: In this round, each individual has to give a lecture for 3

minutes on a topic selected by them.
Final Group Task: It is same as PGT. Candidates have another chance to

show their potential.
On the same day, the candidate’s interview will be conducted. It

involves a personal conversation with an Interviewing Officers.
Day 5 (Conference):
On the final day, candidates & all the SSB board member sit together
and have a chat to the candidates to ask a few general questions. The
conference is just to decide whether you recommend as an officer in
Indian defense forces or not. Candidates are required to come before
the complete Board of Examiners, which is consisted of President,
Deputy President, all the GTOs, all the psychologists and Technical
Officer.

Within an hour, the SSB result will be declared after completion of the
board meeting. Selected candidates undergo medical test for further 3
or 5 days. After qualifying candidate’s medical test, the final merit list
will be announced.
Getting deep into psychology

Psychological tests reflect your thoughts and appproach to different
situations when put under pressure. There is no right or wrong
response, rather SSB is looking for responses suitable for being a
defence personnel. Therefore, always make sure that whenever you
write anything in psychological testing, it must be relevant to your
experiences in real life.
Tips to follow while writing TAT stories :-
1. Always choose a hero of your age and the one you can relate to or
you must be aware of details of profession you're assigning him.
2. Try to put picture in middle of story, frame the story in following

steps - first write what led to the situation, then write about what's
happening and in the end, always talk about future perspective.
3. Never ever make wishful stories from movies and sci-fi.
4. Write each action connecting to previous one and there shall not be
loopholes.
5. Don't practise writing stories with pictures, rather think about

general themes, gather knowledge about different social professions,
first aid procedures, etc.

SAMPLE STORY - 1
Yashank, a 28 years old mechanical engineer in magpie private limited

Manesar. One day, while coming back to home from office, he heard a
immediate brake sound and witnessed a collision of a car and a scooter.
He immediately rushed to the spot and observed that scooter rider was
severely injured on head as he wasn't wearing the helmet. He
immediately took the injured to the roadside, asked others to vacate the
road for traffic, gave first aid using the kit present in the car and tied the
head using his handkerchief. He then took the injured to the SV Hospital
that is 3kms away by the help of that car driver, they admitted him to the
hospital, informs the injured's family and gave the information of
hospital, waits till the family arrived, gave the information of scooter and
then took the leave, went to home.

SAMPLE STORY - 2
Mohit, a 24 years old civil engineer in Nirmal Constructions, Noida. Once,

he was given a project in Jaipur. He visited the city, settles down in the
hotel. He had some time, so he decided to explore the place. He talked
to hotel staff and got to know about the Jaigarh Fort nearby. He booked
a OLA cab using app, visited the Jaigarh Fort, took the entrance ticket.
During the exploration, he noticed a cannon which was quite big, he
gathered the information and found that it was Jaivana Cannon, he
clicked the images and felt excited and amused. Then, he explored the
remaining area of fort, had some meal, enjoys the place,went back to the
hotel with many memories and continues his work as assigned.

SAMPLE STORY - 3
Priya was living in Satna district. One day, she got to know from her
friends that District level Tennis team selection was going to happen
after a month. She informed immediately to her younger brother who
was passionate about Tennis. She helped him in making daily plan for
practice and studies, in morning hours she accompanied him for
excercise and running, took permission from her father's company
authority to utilise their tennis court, in evening after her work hours
accompanied her brother for practice, also reminded him throughout for
good and healthy diet, motivated and encouraged him throughout , on
the final day her brother went confidently taking blessings of Priya and
parents, performed well there with his full might and got selected for the
team.

SAMPLE STORY - 4
Ritu was studying in Kanya vidyalaya in Dhawari, Katni. On first

day of 12th board examination day, she and her batchmates
reached examination centre on time. She checked the seating
arrangement there and also helped her friends in finding theirs,
she Focused on long breathings to wipe out any stress, also she
wished good luck to her friends and motivated them, on hearing
the bell they all took blessings of their parents and important
items from them and entered the hall in queue. Ritu sat at her
place , prayed to God , attempted exam with proper time
management like she did in previous tests and finished the exam
with great satisfaction.

SAMPLE STORY - 5
One day on weekend holiday, Raman, 22 years old decided to

take his family to visit famous Jai vilas palace of his city. He
decided the timing of 4pm and asked all members to be ready,
meanwhile he booked an auto, made his clothes ready and on
time the family departed for palace. On reaching the place he
read all the instructions carefully in notice board, thereafter
hired a guide, visited all the historical corners of place, explained
it's origin and importance to his family members, after having
dinner together, they came back home happily.

SAMPLE STORY - 6
Shyam, a final year student of electronics engineering had been

preparing for GATE since 3rd year. He gave the exam and secured AIR
23.As he was a day scholar, he told this to his mother first and his mother
blessed him. He called his father and told him the result. He called his
friends congratulated those who cleared and motivated others who
didn't. At the college he was approached by his juniors, he told them the
starategy he followed, the topics which were having more weightage in
the exam and told them to solve previous year papers. He told them the
YouTube channels which were helpful during his preparation and told
them to feel free to contact him if they need any help and felt happy.

SAMPLE STORY - 7
Sanjay, a 3rd yr engineering student wanted to become president of

student Union so that he can work for the welfare of the students. He
saw on the notice board that dates has been announced.He along with
his friends used to interact with other students and listen to their
problems and welcome their opinions.He made a ppt in which he
mentioned all the solutions and other things that he want to do for the
students. 2-3 days before the election, he called all students at the
auditorium by giving information to the respective CRs of branches of all
years and gave the presentation and answer the questions of the
students. Students got impressed by the solutions and voted in favour of
him. He got elected as president, thanked all students and started
working for the students.

SAMPLE STORY - 8
Ram was a software engineer and his wife Geeta was a

housewife. One day while coming down, Geeta slipped from the
stairs and became unconscious. Ram immediately hold her and
put her on the bed. He sprinkled water on her face and Geeta
regained consciousness. He calmed her and asked where she got
hurt. He applied move on her back and leg and called doctor for
her checkup. Doctor gave medicines and told her to take rest.
Ram took care of Geeta, made sure she was taking proper rest,
remind her to take medicines on time and helped in household
chores and by thisGeeta recovered soon.

SAMPLE STORY - 9
Ankita Singh 23 yrs old Team associate at creative travel,

gurgaon. She got to know that her friend lost his job due to
company shutdown. She invited him to drinks after office along
with her office colleagues. With reference of her colleague she
shared a list of 10 companies with opening in UK travel market
in NCR. She helped him to redraft his resume and sent it to
companies next morning. She also spoke to her HR and got an
interview scheduled at her company. She helped him prepare for
interview by making notes of company profiles and industry
updates. She went with him to 3 interviews as well to boost his
moral. After 20 days of efforts got 4 offer letters, compared
according to profile and joined it.

SAMPLE STORY - 10
Pinal Maru, 21 years old 3rd Year Naval cadet at 1 Raj Naval Unit Ajmer.
On 30th August she was called by Chief Petty Officer to conduct CATC
camp in unit for 600 cadets on 20th September. She with help of Admin
dept. took the list of 10 schools associated with her unit and sent an
invite via Email of unit. She called a meeting of 10 3rd year and 10 2nd
year cadets, divided work like Tent Setup, cultural programs, weapon
cleaning, MI room set up, Sports activities and assigned to each team of

University Swimming Pool, and Army Shooting Range. 3 days before
camp she along with 5 juniors and 2 Petty officers took boat, and rowing
equipments to check beforehand at Anasagar. With timely preparation
