One negotiation scene from a movie that impressed me is from “The Godfather” (1972).

The
main characters are Bonasera and Don Corleone. Bonasera comes to Corleone to ask for his help to
make justice for his daughter, who was treated poorly by her boyfriend. Disappointed by Bonasera’s
attitude towards him during several years, Corleone refuses to help him, in spite of the fact that
Bonasera told him that he would do anything for him. However, after kissing Corleone’s hand as an act
of respect, Bonasera’s request of the godfather helping him was approved, as Corleone makes it clear
that Bonasera ows him and one day, at some point, he will be the one to ask Bonasera for a favor.

*Don Corleone tried to make Bonasera feel guilty for treating him disrespectfully during the years, and
Bonasera was ready to do anything for her daughter and have the godfather help him.

From this scene I have noticed some negotiation techniques, such as:

- to be confident as you defend your interests

-be patient and remain silent before making a decision
- don’t lose sight of your interests or vision (do not take unnecessary risks)
-be flexible: as Don Corleone tells Bonasera that “If one of my friends should make enemies, they would
become my enemies” . From this I understand that you need to be aware of your surroundings, that you
can have both enemies and partners and most importantly, the roles in this matter could reverse.
