Understanding Ielts Writing Task 2
Understanding Ielts Writing Task 2
4
The structure of an IELTS Writing Task 2 body paragraph flows naturally from the topic sentence. The
topic sentence leads to the explanation, the explanation leads to an example, and then all three of those
initial sentences flow together into a summary. In greater detail, here is how all four parts work together:
1. Topic sentence (states a position)
2. Explain why (gives a reason the position in the topic sentence is true, can be 1 or 2
sentences)
3. Give an example (provides an example that illustrates the “explain why” part, can be 1 or
2 sentences)
4. Summarize the IELTS Writing paragraph (in a single sentence, summarizes the main
message of the topic sentence, explanation, and example combined)
5
1. Overusing “lofty” vocabulary. It can be tempting to try to impress the scorers with
advanced vocab. But using tons of hard words can make your writing harder to understand,
and increases your risk of making mistakes.
2. Forgetting the example sentence. It can be easy to rush and skip the third sentence in the
structure of your body paragraph. But a lack of examples can take multiple bands off of your
IELTS band score!
3. Inadequate reasons or examples. Once you explain why you hold the position in our topic
sentence, think carefully and put yourself in the reader’s shoes. Would someone else reading
this really understand how your reason and example explain your position in the topic
sentence? Remember that while you understand your position, other people might not!
4. Sentences that are run-on or overly long. Your ideas are clearest when divided into
separate sentences. Don’t combine any of these four sentences!
5. Lack of variety in vocabulary or grammar. Using the exact same sentence structure over
and over or repeating the same words and phrases makes your writing sound dull and makes
it seem as if you have limited English ability. Make sure you keep things varied!
6
Disagree: workplaces still have dress codes
Agree: casual wear far more popular than in past
Disagree: brand names of causal wear = socially important
Agree: in daily life, people can wear what they like
Disagree: in many special situations formal wear is still required
Once you’ve completed this kind of brainstorming, you can pick the side you want to write about. You
could go with your own opinion, but it’s most useful to go with whichever side you think you can explain
the most easily. For the example sentences in this article, I’m going to take the “disagree” position. Once
you’ve gone through this whole tutorial though, feel free to go back and write “agree” sentences for extra
practice!
I think that ultimately, society still places a lot of importance on how people dress, even if
fashion trends have changed.
7
We’ll write these explain why sentences as support for one of the example topic sentences I just showed
you. Here’s the one we’ll go with:
Even in situations where people can dress casually, the specific fashion choices they make are
still important to others.
And here are some IELTS paragraph writing sample sentences explaining why the position in this topic
sentence is true:
First impressions are based partly on how someone looks, since what someone looks like is
the only thing we can know for certain when we first meet them. The way a person dresses is
a significant part of that.
Even within the realm of casual clothes like tee shirts or sports shoes, certain brand names
are considered to be more prestigious or stylish by others.
Even in relaxed workplaces and other settings that permit casual attire, there are still rules
about what people can and can’t wear.
The clothes that one puts on in the morning are a matter of choice, and people are judged by
their choices.
8
If someone chooses to wear clothing such as cutoff jeans or a faded tee-shirt to a funeral, for
instance, they might be seen as disrespectful.
Consider the way you might dress for a job interview, especially for a particularly important,
well-paying job. Even if you were told you could dress casually, you would likely pick out your
clothes very carefully.
As evidence of this, someone wearing motorcycle clothing (dark leather jacket, steel-toed
boots, etc.) might be seen as tough or even scary by a stranger.
To illustrate this, the majority of people surveyed say that they have at times chosen not to
talk to someone new because of how they were dressed, as reported by a recent study.

5.1. Sample IELTS Writing Task 2 Question 1
Some people feel it is best to decide on your field of work while you are still in high school.
Others feel it is better to wait until later in adulthood to choose a career. Discuss both of these
views and give your opinion.
Sample Thesis Statement
For this example, instead of brainstorming, I’m going to simply directly show you a possible thesis
statement; the thesis statement is the sentence from the introductory paragraph that states the position
you’re taking. Body paragraphs support that position, so the example paragraph below will build on this
statement:
I believe it is better to make career decisions as an adult, when one has more education and
life experience.
Review of Body Paragraph Structure
Before I show you this full example, remember the structure we discussed. This paragraph will have
these four sentences:
(1) topic sentence
(2) “explain why” sentence
(3) “give an example” sentence
(4) “summarize the paragraph” sentence.
These sentences will be numbered in the example below.
Model IELTS Writing Task 2 Body Paragraph Structure
(1) Adult-level education is particularly important when it comes to making good career
decisions. (2) In fact, most good-paying jobs require completion of high school and possibly
college education, both of which are not completed until adulthood. (3) To give a few
examples, common careers such as police officer, teacher, electrician, nurse, and bus driver
all require either a high school or college diploma. (4) Clearly, it’s very difficult for children
to choose a career before they’ve even completed the minimum training for most careers.
5.2. Sample IELTS Writing Task 2 Question 2
ở thành phố lớn đều cao hơn so
với nông thôn
Ý chính 2: Cuộc sống ở thành phố lớn có nhiều tiện nghi
Giải thích: Ở thành phố lớn có nhiều dịch vụ đa dạng, đáp ứng mọi nhu cầu của
người dân
Ví dụ: ở thành phố lớn có nhiều cụm rạp chiếu phim, các phim được chiếu sớm;
có nhiều chương trình ca nhạc quy mô lớn…
6. The Takeaway
As I mentioned at the beginning of this tutorial, IELTS Writing Task 2 body paragraph structure really is
like a miniature 4-paragraph essay: you introduce your paragraph topic in the first part, you then support
your topic in parts 1 and 2, and finally, in the last sentence, you have a conclusion that reviews everything.
Not only that, but the second and third parts of the paragraph contain the building blocks of strong
writing: logical reasoning (the “explain why” part), and concrete examples (the “give an example part).
As a result, following this recommended four-part structure will really help you practice the right
approach to creating the entire essay. And it will help you practice the kind of idea development that is
so important when you write for a class or for a work assignment in an English-speaking country.
This IELTS Writing Task 2 body paragraph structure is especially important to your writing score for
another reason: your body paragraphs actually take up most of the essay. Think of these paragraphs as
the “backbone” of the essay; the body is the main support for the ideas in the introductory paragraph,
and it’s the basis for the conclusion.

READING II. TÌM KIẾM MAIN IDEAS CHO BÀI VIẾT
A/ GENERATING IDEAS FOR IELTS WRITING TASK 2
One common problem faced by many IELTS test takers is generating ideas for IELTS Writing Task 2.
They look at the statement and question…and have absolutely no idea what to write about!
The worst thing to do is to simply start writing with no idea of what you’re going to write about. You
will just get stuck, or you will write complete rubbish!
This post will give you some ideas for generating ideas for IELTS Writing Task 2. Once you’ve got some
ideas, it’s much easier to put them into a clear, logical structure.
Before I get to methods for generating ideas for IELTS Writing Task 2, let’s look at some 4 of the reasons
why generating ideas can be difficult.
12
Many websites also publish lists of “reported essay questions” – some of these can be unreliable: they
depend on the accurate reporting of the question by test takers, but even a single wrong word can change
the meaning of the question.
So instead, only use AUTHENTIC IELTS essay questions. By “authentic”, I mean questions written by
reputable publishers like Cambridge English, Collins and Macmillan, or test questions on websites run
by IELTS, the British Council and IDP. I recommend you use essay questions from the “Cambridge
IELTS Authentic Practice Tests” series. These include carefully written essay questions. Here is a
selection of some of these IELTS essay questions.
13
14
What are the main causes of traffic congestion, and how can we solve it?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of being self-employed?
What are the main causes of obesity, and how can people lose weight?
Sport is a great way of bringing people together. Do you agree or disagree?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using social media?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of travelling?
Some people think that you should get married before you are 30, while others think you
should wait until you are older. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Some people think that Liverpool is the best team in the world, while others think that it is
Barcelona. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Many people buy lots of shoes. Why is this the case? Do you think it is a good or bad thing?
Some people like to buy luxury goods (e.g. designer bags). Why do you this this is? What
problems can it cause?
If you only spend 10 minutes a day coming up with ideas, you will soon be an expert idea generator.
15
When I googled “why should I visit Antarctica”, I found this site, which gives you 9 reasons to visit
Antarctica.
https://global.hurtigruten.com/destinations/antarctica/inspiration/9-reasons-to-travel-to-
antarctica/
Next I googled “why should I visit Sahara”, and I got some more reasons.
https://www.thetravelmagazine.net/reasons-to-visit-sahara-desert.html
And then I found some of the difficulties a visitor to the desert might find:
https://traveltips.usatoday.com/hike-anthem-arizo
https://www.thetravelmagazine.net/reasons-to-visit-sahara-desert.htmlna-62575.html
Obviously you wont be able to do this in the actual exam, but by doing it when you practise generating
ideas, you will expose yourself to the ideas and thinking of other people. This will help you develop your
own idea generation skills.
16
A.2.5. Simplify The Question
Many IELTS questions are quite long and complicated. If you focus on the whole question, it can be
difficult to generate ideas because you have to understand the question and think of answers at the same
time. So it’s a good idea to make the question simpler.
For example, here’s a complicated question about recycling:
Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only
way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
This 48 word statement and question could be summarised in just 4 words:
Are recycling laws needed?
This makes coming generating ideas much easier, because you now have a simple question to answer.
But beware, don’t CHANGE the question. Make sure it’s asking the actual IELTS question in a short
way. And when you plan your essay in detail, make sure you look back at the full question: this will help
ensure you answer the question directly.
17
Choose the ideas that are easiest to explain.
Remember, for a high band score, the IELTS examiner is looking for relevant ideas that are well
developed, not interesting or complicated ideas. So choose the ideas that are easiest to write about.
B/ CÁC PHƯƠNG PHÁP LÊN Ý TƯỞNG HIỆU QUẢ TRONG IELTS WRITING
Phương pháp 1: Thay đổi góc nhìn (Change your Perspective)
Với phương pháp này, thí sinh đặt mình vào vị trí của những người khác nhau để suy nghĩ về chủ đề. Vì
mỗi người có một thế giới quan hoàn toàn khác nhau, cách này có thể mang đến cho người học những ý
tưởng độc đáo không ngờ. Đây là một phương pháp rất thông dụng, là vị cứu tinh của nhiều thí sinh
IELTS khi làm bài Writing task 2 và Speaking Part 3.
Ví dụ với câu hỏi này: ‘Should animal testing be banned?’ (Có nên cấm thử nghiệm trên động vật?)
A researcher might say: “No because animal testing contributes to life-saving cures and treatments. It is
also crucial to ensure that vaccines are safe.” (Một nhà nghiên cứu sẽ nói: ”Không, vì thử nghiệm động
vật góp phần làm ra những phương thuốc và cách điều trị có khả năng cứu sống con người, đồng thời
giúp bảo đảm sự an toàn của vắc xin”)
Animal-lovers might say: ”Yes because animal testing is cruel and inhumane. We should treat them the
way we would a person because every life is important.” (Những người yêu động vật sẽ nói: ”Có, vì thử
nghiệm trên động vật rất tàn nhẫn và vô nhân tính. Ta nên đối xử bình đẳng với cả con người và con vật
bởi mọi sinh mạng đều quan trọng”)
A child might say: “It is simply wrong to hurt animals because they are cute, harmless and friendly.”
(Một đứa trẻ sẽ nói: “Việc làm tổn thương động vật là sai trái đơn giản vì chúng vô hại, thân thiện và
rất dễ thương.”)
While a patient might think: “No, because animals must be used in cases when ethical considerations
prevent the use of human subjects. It’ll be worth it since the new medicines are going to save lives”.
18
Who wants to ban animal testing? Who doesn’t? (Ai sẽ muốn cấm thử nghiệm trên động vật? Ai sẽ không
muốn?)
Why do people use animals as test subjects? Why do they want to ban animal testing? (Vì sao chúng ta
lại thử nghiệm trên động vật? Sao ta lại muốn cấm phương pháp này?)
How are animals actually treated when used as test subjects? (Động vật bị đối xử như thế nào khi được
dùng làm vật thí nghiệm?)
How many animals are killed every year by this method? (Có bao nhiêu động vật bị giết mỗi năm bởi
cách thí nghiệm này?)
What would happen if animal testing was banned? What if it becomes more popular? (Điều gì sẽ xảy ra
nếu thử nghiệm trên động vật bị cấm? Hệ quả của việc quy mô của nó được mở rộng?)
Which countries support/oppose animal testing?
Phương pháp 5: Làm phương trình toán học (Create a Mathematical Equation)
Tuy không mấy thông dụng, cách này rất đơn giản và sử dụng được trong nhiều trường hợp.
Một ví dụ áp dụng vào bài Writing task 2:
‘Some people think that hosting an international sports event is good for the country, while some people
think it is bad. Discuss both views and state your opinion.’
(Có ý kiến cho rằng tổ chức các sự kiện thể thao quốc tế có tác động tích cực tới sự phát triển đất nước,
cũng có ý kiến phản đối quan điểm này. Xem xét cả hai mặt và nêu ý kiến.
Thí sinh có thể viết lại đề bài thành hai phương trình cân đối dựa vào các keyword trong đề:
Hosting international sports events + _________________ = good for the country
Rồi sau đó nghĩ ra các ý hợp lý để điền vào chỗ trống:
VD : tourist income, more jobs and investment, popularity, legacy benefits, people’s enthusiasm, …
Hosting international sports events + _________________ = bad for the country
VD: cost of building stadiums, cost of increased security, potential for negative publicity, potential for
COVID boom …
Từ đó, liên kết các ý (nếu có thể) hoặc chọn 1 hay 2 ý hay nhất để phát triển làm luận điểm chính cho bài
viết.
20
READING III. CÁCH PHÁT TRIỂN SUPPORTING IDEAS
A/ PHÂN LOẠI CÁC LOẠI LUẬN CỨ (SUPPORTING IDEAS)
You’ve been asked to write a paper that advances and supports an idea or conclusion you’ve reached.
Once you have done the reading, thinking, discussing, and drafting that help you identify the main point
you want to make about a topic—the central claim of your paper—what counts as effective support for
this claim? Here are three accepted ways to support your argument. They can be used separately or in
combination, according to your purpose and audience.
A.1. Statistics
Statistics convey information in numerical form, often referred to as data. Statistics are most accessible
and convincing when they are used sparingly and in combination with an explanation of why the
numbers are significant. Remember that even though statistics are considered factual, numbers can be
presented in different ways to suggest dramatically different conclusions. Pay attention to any conflicting
information you find and be sure to provide the full context of statistical data. In the paragraph below,
the writer effectively uses data to support his argument. Notice that the writer identifies and credits the
source of the data, summarizes it succinctly, and states plainly in the final sentence what conclusion he
(the writer) draws from the results:
The slower traffic speeds necessitated by traffic circles also reduce the number and severity
of accidents. In an article from the journal Planning, titled “Let’s Go Round and Round: An
Idea That’s Worth Copying,” author Georges Jacquemart describes a study of 181 recently
built roundabouts in the Netherlands. Some of these roundabouts were built at previously
uncontrolled intersections, while others replaced traffic signs or traffic lights. Results of the
study showed a fifty-one percent reduction of total accidents and a seventy-two percent
reduction of injury-causing accidents (18). Because traffic circles force motorists to slow
down and pay attention, they lead to safer intersections.
A.2. Examples
Appropriate examples can support the writer’s contention that a general statement is true. Not only do
they provide specifics and details in support of a claim, but the vivid description they often include
helps to capture and retain the reader’s attention. In the following paragraph, the writer includes examples
of mistreatment to support the claim that women’s right to vote was “hard-won”. She also draws a
conclusion from the examples in her final sentence.
Women’s right to vote is a relatively new and hard-won privilege. The suffragists, who
demonstrated for their cause in front of the White House in 1917, were incarcerated and
tortured. For example, the prison guards beat Lucy Burn and left her hanging all night, her
hands cuffed to a bar above her head. They also threw Doris Lewis headlong into a cell,
smashing her head into an iron bed. For weeks, while imprisoned, these women were fed only
worm-infested slop. When one of their leaders, Alice Paul, began a hunger strike in protest of
the treatment they were receiving, prison personnel tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her
throat, and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks
(Patterson 78-80). These women endured torture on behalf of an entire class of human beings
who were denied the right to vote. Women of today owe this right to the courageous suffragists
who preceded them.
21
Below, the writer uses a personal example to support his agreement with the author of a text. Notice how
the writer both tells his story with details and ends the paragraph by spelling out why the story is relevant
to his argument:
I agree with Djilas that anticipating torture can often be more terrifying than actual torture.
When I needed to go to the doctor to get a shot, I put off scheduling the appointment as long
as possible. I am terrified by the mere idea of being stuck with a needle. I didn’t sleep well the
night before my appointment, and by the time I arrived at the doctor’s office, I was jittery and
pale. As the doctor prepared to give me the shot, I squeezed my eyes shut to block out the
horrible pain I was sure was coming. Then I felt the tiniest little pinch. That was all. It was
over. Although state-sponsored torture is certainly far worse than a simple shot in the arm,
my experience has led me to believe that the combination of anticipation and fear one
experiences prior to a painful situation often causes more discomfort than the situation itself.
A.3. Expert Opinion
Expert opinions are based on factual evidence but differ from fact in that they are interpretations of fact.
For example, psychiatrists determining a criminal’s mental state may consider the same data set and
observation yet offer differing interpretations of this information. The fate of the criminal—mental
hospital versus prison—may depend upon which argument is more convincing. The fact that experts can
draw different conclusions from the same information shows that opinions may not be as reliable as
facts or personal experience, but they are a useful and common means of supporting an argument.
In much of the argumentative writing you do, you will rely upon the opinions of experts in the field you
are studying both to determine your own perspective and to support your claims. The following passage
is taken from an essay titled “The Decline and Fall of Teaching History,” in which author Diane Ravitch
argues that an ignorance of history will prevent people from being able to make independent judgments
on current issues. Ravitch cites the opinion of a university professor as support for her claim:
My gloomy assessment was echoed by Naomi Miller, chairman of the history department at
Hunter College in New York. “My students have no historical knowledge on which to draw
when they enter college,” she said.…Professor Miller believes that “we are in danger of
bringing up a generation without historical memory. This is a dangerous situation.
In citing Miller, Ravitch is using the experience, credentials, and conclusions of someone else to vouch
for her argument. Miller’s words, if you will, are used to bear witness to the situation Ravitch is
describing. Miller’s profession and high rank strongly imply that Miller has the necessary experience
with entering college students to draw sound conclusions. Citing an expert for any argument is easy to
do and its success depends on your choosing an expert with the relevant credentials. How effective would
Ravitch be had she quoted a famous talk show host?
B.3. Cách khắc phục lỗi lập luận cho IELTS Writing Task 2
Bước 3: How

ở thành phố lớn đều cao hơn so
với nông thôn
Ý chính 2: Cuộc sống ở thành phố lớn có nhiều tiện nghi
Giải thích: Ở thành phố lớn có nhiều dịch vụ đa dạng, đáp ứng mọi nhu cầu của
người dân
Ví dụ: Ở thành phố lớn có nhiều cụm rạp chiếu phim, các phim được chiếu sớm;
