Question 1 (10 marks)

The cement silo shown in the photo stands on campus, outside the Concrete laboratory at
Engineering 4. The sketch shows a vertical cross section through the centre of the silo. We
want to paint the silo and fill it with cement and you need to:
a) Determine the maximum volume of cement that we can store in the silo.
b) Determine the volume of paint required to paint the outside surface if the paint
drums we purchased indicate that you can paint 5m2 with one litre of paint.
For calculation purposes, you can ignore the thickness of the metal sheet that forms the
outside surface of the silo as well as any surface imperfections and ribs sticking out of the
steel surface.
The top of the silo is a solid lid that must be painted, but the bottom is Silo
an outlet valve that must not be painted. Outlet valve

Question 2 (15 marks)

a) Determine the x and the y co-ordinate of the centroid of the shaded area.
b) Determine the second moment of area of the shaded area around the y axis.

Question 3 (10 marks)

a) Determine the minimum and maximum moment

of inertia of a profile around the axis through its
centroid.
b) Determine the angle between the positive x axis
and the major principle axis.
c) If the profile is placed on a roof with a slope of
20o (anti-clockwise from the positive x-axis),
what is the second moment of area around the
Ixx = 29.29 x 106 mm4
horizontal axis through the centroid?
Iyy = 5.667 x 106 mm4
Ixy = -9.366 x 106 mm4

Question 4 (10 marks)

Your uncle lives on a farm where water is stored in a circular water tank (reservoir) with a depth of 3m that was built
with bricks. The reservoir has cracked and it is now leaking. He wants to fix it by using two steel straps to keep the
wall together and he has asked you to determine the size of the straps required to resist the water force. You can
assume that the inside diameter of the reservoir is 10 m.
a) What is the maximum total horizontal tensile force caused by the water pressure that must now be resisted
by the new straps?
b) If the maximum allowable tensile stress in the straps is 100 MPa and each of the two straps is 50 mm wide,
what is the minimum required thickness of the straps to resist the maximum water force?

Question 5 (15 marks)

A two-member frame is connected with a pin at point E,

while a cable is connected to point C, passing over a
smooth peg at point D, supporting a load of 5 kN as
indicated in the sketch. Determine the horizontal and
vertical reactions at points A and B.
