TASK 20-52-24-700-000-012
Insulation Test (AIRBUS)

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE ELECTRIC TOOLS IN AREAS WHERE THERE ARE RISK
S OF EXPLOSION (FUEL TANKS, FUEL VAPOUR AREAS, ETC.). REFER TO YOUR LOC
AL REGULATIONS AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU OBEY THEM. SOME ELECTRIC TOOLS
SUCH AS HEAT GUNS, SOLDERING IRONS AND TOOLS WITHOUT INTRINSIC PROT
ECTION ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THESE AREAS.

CAUTION: ONLY DO THIS TEST FOR THE ELECTRICAL ITEMS SPECIFIED IN THIS PROCEDUR
E. YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE IF YOU DO THIS PROCEDURE FOR OTHER ITEMS.

1. General
A. Reason for the Job
- To do a check of the insulation between conductors and between conductors and the s
tructure.
- The insulation test is not applicable to standard wires (risks for personnel, wiring and
electrical components).
- To do a check of the integrity of standard wires, do continuity and short-circuit tests
(Refer to chapters 20-52-21 and 20-52-22).
B. Additional information
Do an insulation test of:
- AC generator feeders (between phases, phases and ground, neutral and ground),
- E routes cables of AC generators (PMG) and E route cables between AC generator and
protective panels,
- Battery feeders (G route cables),
- Battery support only if the support is not made of an insulating material. Do a test of
the insulation between the metallic battery support and the aircraft ground),
- Transformer Rectifier Unit feeders (G route cables),
- APU starter wires,
- Fuel pump supply cables,
- Ground power receptacle feeders (G route Cables),
- Auto Transformer Unit feeders (G routes cables),
- Static Inverter feeders (G route cables).

3. Job Set-Up
SUBTASK 20-52-24-941-001-001
A. Preparation
- Connect the aircraft structure to the ground.
- Disconnect the lightning protection unit (LPU).
- Disconnect the wire, cable or feeder at each end.

NOTE: The test voltage must be supplied by a high impedance source.

NOTE: It is necessary to make sure that no equipment to be tested will be damaged by th
e test voltage.

CAUTION: DO NOT CAUSE DAMAGE TO CONNECTOR CONTACTS WHEN YOU DO CONTINUITY

CHECKS. DAMAGED CONTACTS CAN BECOME LOOSE AND CAN THUS INTERMITTEN
TLY PREVENT CORRECT CONTINUITY.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE WIRE IS DISCONNECTED AT EACH END BEFORE YOU DO TH
IS TEST.
IF THE WIRE IS NOT DISCONNECTED, THE VOLTAGE USED FOR THIS TEST CAN CA
USE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.

CAUTION: BE CAREFUL NOT TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE WIRE INSULATION. IF THERE IS DA

MAGE TO THE INSULATION, MOISTURE CAN GO INTO THE WIRE AND CAUSE CORR
OSION AND SUBSEQUENT FAILURE OF THE WIRE.
4. Procedure
SUBTASK 20-52-24-912-001-001
A. Insulation Test
Ref. Fig. Insulation Test
(1) Connect the megohmmeter (MEGOHMMETER 200 MOHMS - 500 VDC, 0.001 A MAX) o
r equivalent. Refer to the manufacturer's instruction before you do the test.
(2) To do this test, you must connect the conductor to one probe of the Megohmmeter th
at supplies 500 VDC +/- 10%.
(3) With the other probe, touch, for 25 ms, all the others conductors commoned together
with the main assembly and any other metallic parts (braid, backshell, etc.) that are
not bonded together to the return line.
(4) The insulation test value must not be less than 20 Mohms in all temperature and relat
ive humidity conditions.
(5) Do this procedure for each conductor.
