Capitalist Nigger is a controversial book by CHIKA ONEAYI, a Nigerian born author. The book
challenges the conventional understanding of race, politics and economics in a global context y
focusing on the concept of the “Capitalist Nigger”. Oneayi provocatively have been
economically exploited and marginalized and that the way to counter this is through
entrepreneurial capitalism. Some of the characteristics which cause African business poor are
given as such:
1. DEPENDENCY ON AID: Onyeani argues that the reliance on foreign aid can hinder
economic development, fostering in a mentality of dependency rather than self-
sufficiency. Black dependency on the rest of the world to continue to solve its problems
cannot continue. We want to be spoon-fed with every damned product. We don’t find it
shameful that others produce, and we do the consumption. For instance African are more
of consumers than producers which means they consume more of what is made out of
Africa than what is made in Africa hence making the African business producer
businesses poor because their goods won’t be bought. For Example in Cameroon we the
UNVDA found in the North West region which produces Rice but not up to 50% of
Cameroonians consume that rice which is made in their country but they prefer imported
rice, which in turn makes the rice factory business remain unrecognized and poor.
5. LIMITED ACCESS TO CAPITAL: Africa businesses lack financial support from such
as huge or good enough capital to start up their business or even to continue the finance
of their business .The so called big and wealthy men in Africa will rather put the money
they have stolen from the masses of our citizenry in Swiss bank accounts than use that
money to help relieve the poverty, disease and starvation in our midst; they would rather
put their money in 5% interest yielding savings accounts than invest in stocks which will
help some African business grow.
6. BLACKS ARE ECONOMIC SLAVES: There is nothing like State of Black Economy.
It does not exist in Africa. Neither does it exist in any other part of the world. It is an
illusion to think there is such a situation called State of Black Economy. Blacks are
economic slaves. There is no group of people in this world who have abandoned any
ambition of being economically independent from the grip of others as the Black race. If
you are talking of a state of Black economy, you have to talk about a people who are able
to create products from its inception to market. You cannot talk of an economy where the
people are mere consumers. Take a walk through the theatres of the marketplace. When
you wake up in the morning, what is the first thing you do? Of course you turn on the
light – electricity. There is no electricity utility company owned by Blacks either in
Africa or the Diaspora, with the fact that blacks are economics slaves the African
business remains poor c we lack the ability to create products and we lack the ability to
create niche for our business.
