CREATIVE NON-FICTION
PERFORMANCE TASK#1
My analysis on The Truth About Filipino Old Timers by Cecelia Manguera Brainard , the
story is an example of Literary Nonfiction .The author presented many techniques in her work ,
in order to understand more deeper about the vision of the story , this essay will present to you
the literary techniques that has been used and brief explanation on the theme of the story. We
will discuss them one by one and let’s see how can this literary techniques contribute to the
story. Let’s begin with the first technique that is mainly use in the story , you see it in every
paragraph and that is imagery, the author uses this descriptive language to appeal the reader’s
senses. I have observed the use of kenning in some of the words, like the word ex- nun .The
author showcase her writing ability by using some figure of speech , like hyperbole and
personification. Another technique that I have observe is the choice of word , example is the
word “meriendas”.The writers uses the flashback technique to reminiscent the past events .The
point of view of the characters was mixed with some dialogue ,which the authors use to show
In order to fully understand the text, you should identify the theme of the story. Based on
my analysis, the ideas presented in the text revolve around elderly people who are seeking love.
Having this idea, it was obvious that the theme applied is love and social conditions of the
elderly. As you analyze more of the text, themes such as stereotyping and inequality can be
observed in the ideas provided by the author. It mainly taIks about the current relationship status
of older people, called “old timers” by the author. The stereotypical view from the autho r’s

perspective is obvious in the sixth paragraph. Also, the fifth paragraph’s use of the phrase “No
Dogs and No Filipinos Allowed” serves as an illustration of the concept of inequality. Actually,
the author successfully communicated his or her thought to a reader like myself by using literary
techniques and topics. The text is not simply a narrative essay in which the protagonist narrates
events from her life, but rather a creative narration with life lessons.
