30 YEARS OF TRIP HOP | CHRONOLOGY 1991-2021

Made by

facebook.com/groups/TripHopLovers

This chronology is for informational purposes only and

is distributed free of charge to members of the TRIP
HOP LOVERS Facebook group and to all those who
request it. The images presented are © of the legitimate
authors, agencies, labels and record companies holding
the rights.
The chronology obviously does not have an all-inclusive
purpose (it would be impossible) but has been drawn up
taking into account all the great, essential masterpieces
of the genre and lesser known records and artists,
coming from all corners of the globe. I decided to add
also those albums of "alternative rock" bands
influenced by Trip Hop, as well as those albums of
electronic music artists who, while doing other genres,
have a strong or relevant Trip Hop component in their
works. The reader will note that they make up the
majority of this list, but this - far from being a cause for
complaint - only testifies to the great influence the
genre has had and continues to have around the world
in all genres of music including Pop.
These albums are marked with a blue caption; an
appropriate note after the title shows the other genres
that make up the work, and any explanatory comments.
The captions of those albums considered to be "pure"
Trip Hop have a normal black caption. These too can be
accompanied by any notes and comments.
Finally, there are also those that I believe are the main
live albums, as well as the main OST, compilations and
Dj Sets dedicated to the genre.
I hope it can be an important tool for all collectors of
the genre but also for the numerous, simple enthusiasts
who frequent the group every day in search of new
things to listen to, both relating to the 90s and '00s and
contemporary.

With the 🔥 in the hand,

________________________________

After 30 years, many people continue to debate what Trip Hop is and what not, in the face of
artists that at first impression may appear as "off-topic" and perhaps, as we will see shortly,
are not, and others who actually they completely border on the genre while still reentering
the huge cauldron of "atmospheric" electronic music.

As is well known, the term "Trip Hop" first appeared in June 1994 when Andy Pemberton, a
music journalist writing for Mixmag magazine, used it to describe DJ Shadow's famous single
"In/Flux". released for the historic Mo' Wax label. The birth of the genre was therefore
"backdated" until 1991, the year of the release of "Blue Lines" by Massive Attack which is
nothing but a brilliant fusion between Acid Jazz, Dub, Dance and Hip Hop. We know that, later
on, the productions of instrumental or "alternative" Hip Hop began to be considered a
separate genre with the term "Abstract" while the bands and artists who perhaps were forced
into the new genre - Portishead, Tricky and the aforementioned Massive Attack - have always
rejected or at least accepted the Trip Hop label in spite of themselves. The fact is that the
term, thanks to them, has taken on very specific connotations...

We speak, generically, of a genre of electronic music with hypnotic atmospheres (hence the
term "trip"), which has its roots in Jazz and Hip Hop, with strong influences of Dub, Rock and
Psychedelic Music, adding to it sometimes even Funk and Soul. The use of turntablism and
samples coexists, just as often, with the use of acoustic instruments - especially bass, guitars
and strings. The lyrics can be rapped softly or sung with warm tones on dark and muffled
bases, often characterized by charged, slowed down beats. This is an approximation, sure, but
it nevertheless constitutes a clear idea of what we commonly refer to as "Bristol Sound".

It must be said that the "pioneering" groups of the genre have always shown a notably
different style, which makes it impossible - in addition to the aforementioned characteristics -
to further define the genre without the risk of running into extremism that they, first of all,
have denied and rejected over the years. When we do it, therefore, we use the term "Trip
Hop" as a convention, now unanimously accepted, to bring together under a single umbrella
different bands and artists who in different ways respond to the above characteristics, while
also spanning other territories of electronic music, like Deep-House, Drum & Bass and Chill
Out.

It is certain in fact that once the contours of the new genre were defined, many bands and
artists have CONSCIOUSLY and admittedly embraced its sound, sometimes in an almost
manneristic way. And that others have ENLARGED it, inserting new influences and founding
their style on the CONTAMINATION between genres, to the point of making their albums
INDEFINABLE under a single unequivocal label.

Trip Hop from the beginning has never been a well-defined genre, if not by virtue of the
aforementioned convention, and the romantic, dark, urban and rainy atmospheres that have
imprinted it in the collective imagination of all of us.

For this reason, it makes no sense to be "purists". Trip Hop can be a Zero7 cinematic track, a
heavy Krush beat as well as a Morcheeba ballad...

·
Acid Jazz is one of the genres that most influenced Trip Hop, along
with Ambient, Dub and Progressive/Psychedelic Rock. In the early 90s, when the term Trip
Hop had not yet been coined, records of this genre were often incorporated into the AJ area,
understood as a large family of styles that incorporates elements of Jazz, Funk and Soul,
combining them with Electronic music and Turntablism. On the other hand, what was Massive
Attack's BLUE LINES (1991) if not a brilliant fusion of Acid Jazz, Dub and Soul?

The AJ was born in the late 1980s in England. The first record testimony dates back to 1987
with "Acid Jazz and Other Illicit Grooves" published by the Urban Records label. Later, the two
DJs and producers Gilles Peterson and Eddie Piller will be the main promoters of the genre,
through the radios, the evenings in the London clubs, and the record labels they founded.

Peterson, to whom we owe the same term "Acid Jazz", founded in

1989 the legendary Talkin Loud for which were released, among others, Galliano, Incognito,
Urban Species and Young Disciples, some of the groups more representative of the genre.
Eddie Piller instead founded the equally important Acid Jazz Records (initially with Peterson
himself), famous above all for having launched Jamiroquai. Other artists produced by Acid
Jazz Records are Brand New Heavies, Vibraphonic, Corduroy and The James Taylor Quartet.

When Coldcut and James Lavelle founded, respectively, Ninja Tune in 1990 and Mo' Wax in
1992, Acid Jazz is undoubtedly the base from which to start, the launch pad to explore new
territories and help define that sound that will be called Trip Hop. In 1993 the single "In/Flux"
by Dj Shadow comes out and the rest is history: until 1995 some of the greatest masterpieces
of the new genre will be released, just as the decline begins for the great epic of Acid Jazz,
probably because it is supplanted by the new trend.

CHRONOLOGY
1991

Created in 1990 by Jonathan More and Matt Black, the duo known as
Coldcut, NINJA TUNE giving an important boost to the newly formed Trip Hop scene in the
early 90s. Coldcut were pioneers of the emerging Hip Hop/Electro scene in the eighties.
Inspired by a visit to Japan, Black & More primarily created Ninja Tune to act as a vehicle by
which they could release music of a more underground nature, free from the restraints placed
on artists by major labels. The first four volumes of 'DJ Food - Jazz Brakes', produced by
Coldcut, were comprised of instrumental hip-hop cuts. Key in the label's success was the
constantly growing roster of very different sounding artists. Among the artists who have
published and collaborated with the label, we mention WAGON CHRIST, AMON TOBIN, DJ
FOOD, DJ VADIM, BONOBO, THE HERBALISER, MR. SCRUFF, THE CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA,
FUNKI PORCINI, KID KOALA, UP BUSTLE AND OUT, THE LONDON FUNK ALL STARS, DJ KRUSH, 9
LAZY 9 and the same COLDCUT.
Massive Attack - Blue Lines.

NOTE: Deut album of English Electronic music band Massive Attack. The recording was led by
members Grantley "Daddy G" Marshall, Robert "3D" Del Naja, Adrian "Tricky" Thaws, and
Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles, with co-production by Jonny Dollar. It also features
contributions by singers Shara Nelson and Horace Andy. Generally regarded as the first Trip
Hop album, Blue Lines blended elements of Hip Hop (such as breakbeats, sampling and
rapping) with Dub, Soul and Dance. AllMusic affirmed the album as the << first masterpiece
>> of what later became known as Trip Hop, and described it as << filter[ing] American Hip
Hop through the lens of British club culture, a stylish, nocturnal sense of scene that
encompassed music from Rare Groove to Dub to Dance >>. Music critic Simon Reynolds stated
that the album also marked a change in Electronic/Dance music, << a shift toward a more
interior, meditational sound >>. In 2000, Q readers placed it at number 9 in the magazine's
poll of the "100 Greatest British Albums Ever". In 2003, the album was included on Rolling
Stone's list of The "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" and again in 2012 and 2020.

Bomb The Bass - Unknow Territory.

NOTE: also file under Breakbeat, House, Downtempo. 2nd album of English musician and
producer Tim Simenon. Interviewed for "Sound on Sound" magazine in 1995, Simenon agreed
with the interviewer when it was suggested that, with this more frenetic side of his work, he
was looking to << combine the art of sampling with the energy of Rock and Roll >>.

Various – The Hard Sell.

NOTE: also file under Breakbeat, Deep House, Howntempo. Bristol charity compilation,
compiled by British journalist Dom Phillips. Born in Bebington, Merseyside on 1964, Phillips
moved to Bristol in 1988 where he started a magazine called New City Press. This led in 1991
to a job with the dance music magazine Mixmag as assistant editor. He became editor in
December 1993 and remained at the magazine until his departure in 1999. The compilation is
an important document for the history of Trip Hop as it shows all that was the alternative
scene of Bristol at the dawn of the 90s, with The Federation, Tricky, Massive Attack, 3PM, and
more...

________________________________

1992

Owned and run by James Lavelle, only constant member of UNKLE,

MO' WAX was launched in 1992 and closed in 2002. The label produced some of the most
inspiring and imaginative realities of the 90s: DJ SHADOW, LUKE VIBERT, LA FUNK MOB, DJ
KRUSH, MONEY MARK, ROB DOUGAN, DR. OCTAGON, ATTICA BLUES, MAJOR FORCE WEST,
BLACKALICIOUS, PSYCHONAUTS, THE INNERZONE ORCHESTRA. The eclecticism and, in many
cases, the genius of these artists shows, in itself, the importance that this label had for the
development of the Trip Hop scene worldwide.

Pressure Drop - Upset.

NOTE: also file under Breakbeat, Dance, Downtempo. The origins of Pressure Drop - Justin
Langlands and Dave Henley - stem back to an era of rib-quaking dub at smoke-filled blues
dances, with scratchy rare groove and Hip-Hop amongst the debris of the original illegal
warehouse parties and the London club scene in the mid to late 1980s. Pressure Drop's music
was born out of a musical fusion reflecting the multi-ethnic culture they both grew up with in
London during a golden age in 20th century music. They could be considered in the vanguard
of early 1990's music makers and alongside other luminaries such as Massive Attack, Smith
and Mighty, The Sandals and Young Disciples, they represented a time of vibrant creative
change in the UK underground music scene. Like Massive Attack's "Blue Lines" UPSET blended
elements of Hip Hop (such as breakbeats, sampling and rapping) with Dub, Soul and Dance.
Neneh Cherry - Homebrew.

NOTE: also file under Downtempo, Hip Hop. Second studio album by Swedish musician Neneh
Cherry, the first with obvious Trip Hop influences. Gang Starr co-wrote and produced "Sassy"
and "I Ain't Gone Under Yet". Geoff Barrow (who later became part of Portishead) wrote and
produced "Somedays".

Stereo MC's – Connected.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Dub, Funk, Downtempo. Stereo MC's are an English band
which formed in Nottingham, England, in 1985. "Connected", their third studio album, is
essentially a cool mash-up of Hip Hop, Funk and Dance music. Its sounds place it among the
precursor discs of Trip Hop, next to those of Pressure Drop and Massive Attack. In 2000, Q
placed "Connected" as #52 in its list of the "100 Greatest British Albums Ever". The album is
also included in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".
Madonna – Erotica.

NOTE: also file under Dance-Pop, House, Contemporary R&B, Downtempo. Produced by
american remixer and DJ Robert "Shep" Pettibone - one of the most prolific of the 1980s -
Erotica is a concept album about sex and romance that mixes the main electronic music
trends of the time: Dance, Hip Hop and R&B, and incorporates elements from classic Disco
and Deep House. Despite being essentially a Pop record, its visibility has undoubtedly
contributed to spreading the Downtempo scene around the world and transforming it into
"mainstream".

Sade – Love Deluxe.

NOTE: also file under Smooth Jazz, Neo Soul, Downtempo. Sade's fourth album, the first of
the 90s. In 2020, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album 247th on its "500 Best Albums of
All Time" list.
Silent Poets – 6 Pieces "Sense At This Moment".

NOTE: also file under Dub, Acid Jazz, Downtempo. Silent Poets was a Japanese electronic duo
(now solo project of Michiharu Shimoda). Their music style is in the best Acid Jazz /
Downtempo traditions and have something in common with such artists as United Future
Organization, DJ Cam and their countryman DJ Krush. Among the characteristic features the
deep piano parts, rich colourful orchestra sound and undulating charming rhythm could be
highlighted. The Silent Poets collaborate with such electronic music stars as Coldcut, Attica
Blues, DJ Vadim, Kid Loco and others.

Miles Davis – Doo-Bop.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Fusion, Contemporary Jazz. Davis died in Santa Monica on
September 28, 1991, a few months after the release of BLUE LINES, Massive Attack's debut
album. During that year, he recorded his latest album, DOO-BOP, which was released
posthumously in 1992 in the midst of the "Acid Jazz phenomenon". The Hip Hop beatmaker
Easy Moo Bee was called to pack the beats. The 9 tracks he composes for Davis are a solid
carpet of Boom-Bap and urban atmospheres, where Davis' trumpet intertwines with samples
of Kool and the Gang, La Di Da Di, Pleasure, Donald Byrd, James Brown, Major Lance, Gene
Ammons and Kc & The Sunshine Band. There is, in this record, the seed of what would have
been just 4 years after Dj Krush's KI-OKU, made together with trumpeter Toshinori Kondo.
Obviously, the slowed and soporific rhythms typical of the great Japanese artist are missing,
but it is possible to find more than one atmosphere in common between the two discs. The
problem is maybe that three tracks are rapped by Easy Moo Bee itself. An avoidable "forcing",
which unfortunately out of place on the whole of a record that if would have been entirely
instrumental would have been perfect. A mistake that Krush won't make in his masterpiece,
leaving the whole scene to Kondo's trumpet.

1993

Pressure Drop - Front Row.

NOTE: also file under Breakbeat, Dub, Downtempo.

© (alias Leslie Winer) – Witch.

NOTE: also file under Leftfield, Abstract, Dub, Downtempo, Spoken Word. Leslie Winer is an
American musician and poet. After having worked as a well-known model in New York in
fashion campaigns for Valentino and Dior and magazines such as Vogue, she leaves the scene
to devote herself to art. Her work brought her to London in the mid-1980s, where she spent a
lot of time at Leigh Bowery's nightclub Taboo. It was while in London she met musicians she
Jah Wobble (former bassist of Public Image Limited) and Kevin Mooney (former bassist of
Adam and the Ants). With Wobble and Mooney, she would record "Witch" in 1990, only
released in 1993. The record became a small cult classic prompting NME to refer to Winer as
"The Grandmother of Trip Hop".

Björk - Debut.

NOTE: also file under Leftfield, House, Dance, Synth-Pop, Downtempo. produced by Björk and
Nellee Hooper. It is Björk's first solo record since the breakup of his previous band, the
Sugarcubes. The album departs from the rock style of his previous work and draws eclectically
from Electronic music, incorporating elements of House, Dance, Acid Jazz and of course Trip
Hop.
Kruder & Dorfmeister - G-Stoned.

NOTE: also file under Future Jazz, Downtempo. Austrian duo known for their Trip
Hop/Downtempo remixes. Their first EP G-Stoned featuring the hypnotic "High Noon" and a
cover resembling Simon & Garfunkel's Bookends to critical acclaim especially from the UK.

Shara Nelson - What Silence Knows.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Downtempo. In the late 1980s, she began working with the
Bristol-based sound system The Wild Bunch, from which Massive Attack would take shape.
Nelson's first release with Massive Attack was the single "Daydreaming" in 1990. As well as
providing vocals, Nelson also co-wrote songs with Massive Attack, including the hit single
"Unfinished Sympathy" which was included on the group's debut album, "Blue Lines" (1991).
In total, Nelson co-wrote and provided vocals on four tracks on the album, including another
hit single, "Safe From Harm". As a solo artist she has had five hit singles in the UK top 40.
"What Silence Knows", her debut album, was selected for the Mercury Music Prize.
Silent Poets – Potential Meeting.

NOTE: also file under Dub, Acid Jazz, Downtempo.

Silent Poets – A Woman Like You OST.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Dub, Downtempo.

United Future Organization - United Future
Organization.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Future Jazz. A Japanese jazz and funk project, founded in 1990
by Raphael Sebbag, Toshio Matsuura & Tadashi Yabe.

Oui 3 – Oui Love You.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Dance. English/American/Swiss band who primarily produced
dance music. The three members of the group were Blair Booth, Philipp Erb and Trevor Miles.
"Oui Love You", Their debut album remained the only one of the band. The record was
produced and mixed mainly by the trio, although some tracks were mixed by Mark "Spike"
Stent, Youth and Phil Bodger. Faithless have since cited Oui 3 as an influence.
Nitin Sawhney – Spirit Dance.

NOTE: also file under Breaks, Downtempo, Ambient. British musician, producer and
composer. His work combines Asian and other worldwide influences with elements of
Electronica and often explores themes such as multiculturalism, politics, and spirituality.

Coldcut - Philosophy.

NOTE: also file under Breaks, Future Jazz, Ambient. Coldcut are an English electronic music
duo made up of Matt Black and Jonathan More, credited as pioneers of pop sampling in the
1980s and founders in 1990 of the eclectic Ninja Tune label with which they have contributed
enormously to the spread of the Trip Hop genre with artists such as Funki Porcini, The
Herbaliser, Dj Food and DJ Vadim , among others. The single "Autumn Leaves" (cover of a
popular jazz standard composed by Joseph Kosma in 1945) sung by singer Janis Alexander is
probably one of the very first examples of "pure" Trip Hop. The strings are recorded at Abbey
Road, with a 30-piece string section and an arrangement by film composer Ed Shearmur.
Almamegretta – Animamigrante.

NOTE: also file under Dub, Downtempo. From Naples, ALMAMEGRETTA is one of the bands
that in the early 90s changed Italian music forever, mixing the trends of European electronics
with neapolitan popular music tradition, drawing musically also from all over the
Mediterranean. Their music has had some success within the European Trip Hop scene,
leading to collaborations with Massive Attack and Adrian Sherwood. Produced by sound
engineer and remixer Ben Young "Animamigrante" is the debut album of the band and the
first single FIGLI DI ANNIBALE, with his blend of Dub and Downtempo, his whispered rap, is
definitely a "proto-karmakoma". So much so that when Ben Young plays it to Massive Attack,
they ask Almamegretta to remix Karmacoma: this is how "Karmacoma (The Napoli Trip)" was
born, inserted in the EP Karmacoma released on March 20, 1995.

Casino Royale - Dainamaita.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock. Italian band formed in Milan in 1987. Authors of an
ever-evolving musical path, starting from the first works oriented to Ska and Reggae and with
English texts. After some years of forced break, due to contractual problems, in 1993 they
publish "Dainamaita" which has very different sounds: the band moves on to singing in Italian
and to contaminations with Hip Hop, Dub and with a Black matrix rock. The album prepares
for the definitive passage to Alternative Rock (soaked of Trip Hop) of the following "Sempre
Più Vicini".

________________________________

1994
The term Trip Hop is coined. In the June 1994 issue of UK magazine Mixmag, music journalist
Andy Pemberton used the term Trip Hop to describe the Hip Hop instrumental of "In/Flux", a
1993 single by DJ Shadow, and other similar tracks released on the Mo' Wax label and being
played in London clubs at the time. "In/Flux", with its mixed up bpms, spoken word samples,
strings, melodies, bizarre noises, prominent bass, and slow beats, gave the listener the
impression they were on a musical trip, according to Pemberton. Soon, Massive Attack's
dubby, jazzy, psychedelic, electronic textures, rooted in Hip Hop sampling technique but
taking flight into many styles, were described by journalists as the template of the genre.
With the debut of Portishead, the media started to refer to the "Bristol scene" or "Bristol
Sound".

Massive Attack - Protection.

NOTE: After Shara Nelson left, the band brought in Tracey Thorn (of Everything But The Girl)
and Nicolette as vocalists. Paul Evans of Rolling Stone wrote: << Cool, sexy stuff, it smoothly
fuses Dub, Club and Soul, grounding its grace in sampled Hip-Hop beats >>. In 2011, Rolling
Stone ranked Protection at number 51 on its list of the "100 Best Albums of the Nineties".

Portishead - Dummy.

NOTE: Portishead consists of Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley. Live shows also
featured DJ Andy Smith on the turntables. The band are named after the nearby town of the
same name, eight miles west of Bristol, along the coast. Winner of the 1995 Mercury Music
Prize, "Dummy" it is often credited with popularising the Trip Hop genre, and is frequently
cited in lists of the best albums of the 1990s. The famous cover of the album is a still image of
vocalist Beth Gibbons taken from "To Kill a Dead Man" - a short film that the band created -
for which the self-composed soundtrack earned the band its record contract.

Dj Krush - Krush.

NOTE: Also file under Acid Jazz, Abstract, Instrumental Hip Hop. Hideaki Ishi, better known as
DJ Krush, is a producer and DJ. He is known for his atmospheric instrumental production
which incorporates sound elements from nature and extensive use of Jazz and Soul samples.
In addition to being considered one of the pioneers of Japanese Hip Hop, DJ Krush has
established himself as one of the most respected artists and producers in the Trip Hop scene.
In 2021, the debut album "Krush" was ranked at number 19 on Slant Magazine's list of the
best Trip Hop albums of all time.

Dj Krush - Strictly Turntablized.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Instrumental Hip Hop. << The tubercular atmospheres and
wheezing bass of the record's best tracks showed that the Downtempo beat crew was capable
of evoking something other than their own ganja-soaked hipness >> (Peter Shapiro in "Drum
'n' Bass: The Rough Guide", 1999). In 2015, writer Daisuke Kawasaki ranked "Strictly
Turntablized" at number 38 on his list of the "100 Greatest Albums of All Time".

Ronny Jordan Meets Dj Krush – Bad Brothers.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Hip Hop. Ronny Jordan (1962-2014) was a British guitarist and
part of the Acid Jazz movement at the end of the twentieth century. Jordan described his
music as "urban jazz", a blend of Jazz, Hip Hop and R&B.
Laika - Silver Apples Of The Moon.

NOTE: also file under Downtempo, Experimental. Laika were an English band formed in 1993
and helmed by Margaret Fiedler (lead vocals, programming) and Guy Fixsen (guitar,
programming). Laika's experimental style blended diverse genres, including Electronica,
Krautrock, Dub, Hip Hop and Jazz. "Silver Apples of the Moon" was the acclaimed first album
of the group. The band quickly became popular in the alternative and underground music
press, its music praised for mingling intricacy, polish and accessibility with experimentation
and originality. In 1995, Fiedler described her band's music as << just like trip-hop, but much
much faster (...) >>. She later recalled that << Guy and I were interested in rhythm but
couldn't get excited about 4/4. So, influenced by bands like The Young Gods, we wanted to
take rock rhythms and turn them upside down.... >>.

The Golden Palominos - Pure.

NOTE: also file under Downtempo, Ambient. Formed in 1981, The Golden Palominos were an
American musical group headed by drummer and composer Anton Fier. Aside from Fier, the
Palominos membership has been wildly elastic, with only bassist Bill Laswell and guitarist
Nicky Skopelitis appearing on every album through 1996. "Pure" is their seventh album. Full
of Ambient, Dub and Trip Hop influences, it's a underrated little Downtempo gem.

Everything But The Girl - Amplified Heart.

NOTE: also file under Downtempo, Synth-Pop. Everything but the Girl (occasionally referred to
as EBTG) is a English musical duo formed in England in 1982, consisting of singer Tracey Thorn
and guitarist, keyboardist, producer and singer Ben Watt. Their hit album "Amplified Heart" is
a hybrid of Folk Rock and Electronica. Producer Todd Terry remixed the single "Missing" that
became an international success, reaching the top 10 around the world. While recording of
"Amplified Heart" Thorn and Watt wrote lyrics and music for two tracks - "Protection" and
"Better Things" - on Massive Attack's second album Protection. Thorn sang lead vocals on
both.

Silent Poets – Words And Silence.

NOTE: also file under Dub, Downtempo.

The Sabres Of Paradise – Haunted Dancehall.

NOTE: also file under Leftfield, Breaks, Abstract, Downtempo. Dub-influenced leftfield
electronic trio comprising Andrew Weatherall, Gary Burns, and Jagz Kooner. The group
released its own material starting in 1993 but was known more for a series of adventurous
remixes of other artists under the Sabres name. When the group disbanded in 1995,
Weatherall went on to form Two Lone Swordsmen with producer/engineer Keith Tenniswood,
while Kooner and Burns joined The Aloof. NME named "Haunted Dancehall" the 47th best
album of 1994. In 2007, the album was included in The Guardian's list of "1000 albums to
hear before you die", with an accompanying write-up citing it as "Techno's first concept
album". It was also included in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die". The
track 5 "Planet D" is produced by Portishead.

Depth Charge – Nine Deadly Venoms.

NOTE: also file under Breakbeat, Abstract, Electro, Downtempo. Jonathan Saul Kane alias
Depth Charge is an English DJ and musician, owner of the record labels DC Recordings and
Electron Industries. He is well known for his pioneering use of samples from cult films in the
martial arts (he used kung-fu film samples before Wu-Tang Clan), Spaghetti Western and
pornographic genres. Kane is often credited as pioneer of Trip Hop and for inventing Big Beat.

9 Lazy 9 - Paradise Blown.

NOTE: also file under Breakbeat, Downtempo. 9 Lazy 9 are an Italian electronic music group,
consisting of Keir Fraser, James Braddell (a.k.a. Funki Porcini), with Gianluca Petrella playing
trombone, Mishael Levron on guitar, Manù Bandettini playing flute and Adriano Tirelli on
bassoon. Keir Fraser and Braddell have been making music for many years in different guises
before combining forces in Rome in the early 90s. In 1994 they soon gained respect for their
first album "Paradise Blown", a smoky Mediterranean mix of vines and good times.

9 Lazy 9 - Electric Lazyland

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Downtempo.

Up, Bustle And Out - The Breeze Was Mellow.

NOTE: also file under Latin, Downtempo, Future Jazz. Up, Bustle and Out are Rupert Mould
(from Bristol), Senor Cuffy (Spanish Guitarist), Dave Cridge (Beatmaker and dj), Eugena
Ledesma (percussion and Vocals) and Nicole Blaze (vocals). Their music combines Electronic,
Jazz, Hip Hop and Funk, but with a distinctly South American and Cuban influences.

Skylab – Skylab#1.

NOTE: also file under Illbient, Downtempo. English/Japanese electronic group formed in 1993
by Howie B, Mat Ducasse, Masayuki Kudo, and Toshio Nakanishi. Kudo and Nakanishi (also
known as Tosh & K.U.D.O.) had previously collaborated as members of Japanese groups such
as Melon and Major Force, while Howie B had been engineering and mixing for Siouxsie and
the Banshees, Soul II Soul, and Massive Attack. Vocalist Debbie Sanders, formerly of Chapter
& the Verse, first appeared on the band's debut album and was later made an official member
of the group.
MC 900 Ft Jesus – One Step Ahead Of The Spider.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Acid Jazz, Downtempo, Spoken Word, Poetry. Mark Thomas
Griffin (Born 1957), better known as MC 900 Ft. Jesus, musician known for blending Hip Hop,
Electronica and Jazz with socially conscious lyrics. "One Step Ahead Of The Spider" escapes
any classification, with a "New Age sensibility" that oscillates between that of a Beatnik poet
and that of an anti-racist preacher. He doesn't rap, he just tells stories. Musically, his style is
imbued with 1970s Miles Davis jazz, Hip Hop beats and rock influences. "Buried At Sea", with
its minimal and persuasive sound, is the song that owes the most to the nascent Trip Hop
scene. << Desperately extravagant >> (Rolling Stone), MC 900 Ft. Jesus is basically an Acid Jazz
record that enters this list mainly for its smoky street atmosphere, its whispered and yet
strong words.

Sinéad O'Connor – Universal Mother.

NOTE: also file under: Folk, Alternative Rock, Pop Rock, Downtempo. Irish singer and
songwriter. "Universal Mother", her (awesome) fourth album, is basically a Folk / Alternative
Rock record skillfully built on O'Connor's vocal cords. But it contains two stunning Trip Hop
tracks, "Fire On Babylon" and "Famine", both produced by Tim -Bomb The Bass- Simenon.
Various – Headz - A Soundtrack Of Experimental Hip-
Hop Jams.

NOTE: Featuring Attica Blues, Nightmares On Wax, La Funk Mob, Dj Shadow, Tranquility Bass,
and more.

Various – Ninja Tune - Trip Hop + Jazz.

NOTE: Featuring Up Bustle And Out, 9 Lazy 9, Dj Food, Hedfunk.

Various – The Rebirth Of Cool 4 Most.

NOTE: also file under Breakbeat, Acid Jazz, Downtempo. Featuring Dj Krush, Tranquillity Bass,
tricky, and more.

________________________________

1995

Tricky - Maxinquaye.

NOTE: Tricky, considered a Trip Hop pioneer, began his career as a collaborator of Massive
Attack, before pursuing a solo career. After participating in "Blue Lines" and "Protection" he
became frustrated with his limited role in the group and wanted to undertake an independent
project. The artist recorded Maxinquaye in 1994 primarily in his home studio in London, with
his then girlfriend Martina Topley-Bird serving as the album's lead singer. Tricky used Dub
music techniques and heavily altered samples taken from a wide variety of sources to
produce Maxinquaye. Its downbeat, muddled and fragmented, groove-oriented sound
incorporates elements of Hip Hop, Soul, Rock, Ambient techno and Reggae. Considered to be
one of Trip Hop's essential masterpieces, "Maxinquaye" has been cited by many music
journalists as the key release of the emerging genre and is often included in the lists of the
greatest albums of th-e 90s.

Earthling - Radar.

NOTE: English Trip Hop band from Bristol comprising Tim Saul (producer) and Mau (MC).
Vocalists Moni and Segun were frequent collaborators, as was - particularly - co-producer and
multi-instrumentalist Edison. The debut album Radar (with scratches, on three tracks, by
Portishead's Geoff Barrow) had moderate success. The disc has been described by Popmatters
as << a respectable complement and contrast to "Dummy", "Maxinquaye", and "Protection"
>>.

The Mighty Bop Feat. La Funk Mob Et EJM – La Vague

Sensorielle.
NOTE: The Mighty Bop is a Trip Hop project by Christophe Le Friant, better known by his stage
name Bob Sinclar, a French record producer, DJ and remixer. EJM is a rapper. La Funk Mob was
the project of Hubert Blanc-Francard AKA Boom Bass and Philippe Zdar Cerboneschi.
Ultimately, La Funk Mob led to the band Cassius. More Trip Hop/Downtempo flavoured, the
sound of La Funk Mob, along with The Mighty Bop, Etienne De Crécy and Dj Cam From Paris,
really helped to establish 'La French Touch'.

NOTE: also file under Future Jazz, Drum n Bass, Downtempo.

Dj Cam - Underground Vibes.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Instrumental Hip Hop. DJ Cam is one of the most influential
french Trip Hop / Hip Hop producers. His music is largely rooted in Hip Hop, combined with
strong Jazz elements, and composed using samples. Soon after his debut, Cam positioned
himself as the European equivalent to DJ Krush and DJ Shadow: a Hip Hop enthusiast capable
of weaving together abstract, blunted beats with finesse. "Underground Vibes" is been
credited as one of early examples of Trip Hop, and he emerged as a leading record in the
"Ambient Hip Hop" (or Abstract) scene of the 90s.

Wagon Christ – Throbbing Pouch.

NOTE: also file under Breakbeat, Abstract, Instrumental Hip Hop, Downtempo. Wagon Christ
is the Alter-Ego of the British electronic music composer and producer Luke Vibert.
"Throbbing Pouch" is his second work under this name. Reviewing the album for Select,
Gareth Grundy described as a "missing link" between Aphex Twin and Mo' Wax. For AllMusic,
Sean Cooper said that Throbbing Pouch is << one of Trip Hop's most influential releases >>.
Kembrew McLeod cited it as << a classic of the Trip Hop canon >> in The New Rolling Stone
Album Guide (2004) and it was included at number 37 in Fact's 2015 list of the "Best Trip Hop
albums of all time". Turk Dietrich of the American experimental music duo Belong wrote that
Throbbing Pouch << may be the only LP that rivals >> DJ Shadow's 1996 release
"Endtroducing". Similarly, critic Simon Reynolds stated in Spin that Throbbing Pouch easily
rivals "Endtroducing" << as a masterpiece of emotive, downtempo sampladelia >>.
Ruby - Salt Peter.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock. Ruby is the collaboration of singer Lesley Rankine and
Mark Walk. The name for this group came about because Rankine and Walk both have
maternal grandmothers named Ruby. Their music styles expanded across the genres of Trip
Hop, Electronic, Noise, Industrial and Jazz, among others. "Salt Peter", their first album, it was
made almost entirely using computer and without a band.

Björk - Post.

NOTE: also file under IDM, Big Beat, Big Band, Downtempo, Experimental. Second studio
album by Björk. Continuing the style developed on her first album Debut (1993), Bjork
conceived "Post" as a bolder and more extroverted set of songs than its precedessor. The
album touches on various musical styles, including Industrial, Big-Band Jazz, Trip Hop, Chillout
and Experimental music. Jim Farber, reviewing the album in 1995 for Entertainment Weekly,
considered Post to be a << connecting point between Industrial-Disco, Ambient-Trance, and
catchy Synth-Pop >>. The balance between synthetic and organic elements in the album -
generated through the combination of electronic and acoustic instruments - is a recurring
characteristic of Björk's output. While IDM and Trip Hop influences were present on "Debut",
"Post" is characterised by Björk's fuller incorporation of these genres. Björk produced "Post"
herself with co-producers including Nellee Hooper, 808 State's Graham Massey, and former
Massive Attack member Tricky.

Bomb The Bass - Clear.

NOTE: also file under Dub, Big Beat, Downtempo. For his third studio album Tim Simenon
weaves an ambitious narrative, tying together Dub and Hip Hop influenced tracks with heady
spoken-word clips from writers Benjamin Zephaniah and Will Self. There are also notable
contributions on vocals from influential artists such as Justin Warfield, Leslie Winer (see in
1993 the album "Witch"), Bernard Fowler, Bim Sherman and Sinead O'Connor. In 2015, Fact
magazine placed CLEAR at number 49 on its list of "the best Trip Hop albums of all time".

Dj Food - A Recipe For Disaster.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Breaks, Breakbeat, Downtempo. DJ Food is an electronic
music project currently led by Kevin Foakes (a.k.a. Strictly Kev), born as a Coldcut side project
for their label Ninja Tune. The project, which began in 1990 with the premise of providing
metaphorical "DJ food", encompassed Patrick Carpenter (reported on the liner notes only
with his initials PC) and Kevin Foakes. Until 1994 DJ Food released the "Jazz Brakes" series
yearly. The discs consisted of collections of breaks, loops and samples that could be used to
mix, remix and produce. "A Recipe for Disaster" was a conscious departure from the series to
lend an artist identity to the project. Since then DJ Food has started a path in Electronic music
through Trip Hop, Dub, Breakbeat, Ambient and Drum n Bass sounds. Although they kept
their hand on the albums, over time Coldcut realized that they couldn't DJ sets twice in one
night under the pseudonym Coldcut first and DJ Food then, so they gave up on live
performances under this name, leaving them to PC and Foakes. Subsequently, PC became so
involved with The Cinematic Orchestra that he decided to leave DJ Food to Foakes as the sole
director of the project.

Hedfunk – Hedfunk.

NOTE: also file under Breakbeat, Future Jazz, Downtempo. Another project by Coldcut and Patrick
Carpenter.

Moloko - Do You Like My Tight Sweater?.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Downtempo, Electro. Moloko are Mark Brydon (producer) and
Róisín Murphy (vocalist). The duo blends elements of Electronica and Dance music. "Do You
Like My Tight Sweater?" is their first album. The single "Fun for Me" was used on the
soundtrack of the 1997 film "Batman and Robin", and was used as the theme for a Lucky
Strike advertisement in Spain.

Smith & Mighty - Bass Is Maternal.

NOTE: also file under Dub, Jungle, Downtempo. Smith & Mighty is a Bristol duo made up of
Rob Smith and Ray Mighty. The two are considered to be true Trip Hop pioneers: they began
to develop the sound of "Bass Is Maternal" - a meeting point between British Rave culture
and Jamaican Dub - since their formation in 1987 and produced the first Massive Attack
single, "Any Love", released in 1988. Their influence on the city's music scene is incalculable.
Without them, Portishead, Tricky and Massive Attack just wouldn't sound the same. "Bass Is
Maternal" takes an experimental approach, mixing Dub, Hip Hop, Reggae, Rock and Electronic
in numerous hybrids largely of a Dance nature. The record prominently incorporates the
dense Jungle music, applying the genre's accelerated breakbeats to dub music. It was
considered a revolutionary album that anticipated the evolutions of the 90s Electronic music.
In 2015, Fact placed the album at number 42 on the "50 Best Trip-Hop Albums of All Time" list
and cited it as << an important chapter in British music history >>.
Dj Krush - Meiso.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Hip Hop. << On "Meiso", Krush he dug for samples and looped
them with the same precision, sensitivity and attention to detail as the finest calligrapher or
ukiyo-e artist. The addition of CL Smooth, The Roots’ Black Thought and Malik B as well as Big
Shug and Guru showed that Trip-Hop’s instrumental aesthetic could also provide the backdrop
for some fine rap moments >>. (Fact magazine In 2015, ranking "Meiso" at number 12 on its
list of the "best Trip Hop albums of all time").

Dj Vadim - Headz Ain't Ready.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Downtempo. DJ Vadim is a Russian-English DJ and producer.
Born in Saint Petersburg and raised in London, is additionally a promoter, record collector,
radio presenter, occasional painter and writer, whose music combines Trip Hop, Hip Hop, Soul,
Reggae, Dub and Electronica.
Funki Porcini - Hed Phone Sex.

NOTE: also file under Breaks, Future Jazz, Downtempo. Funki Porcini (a twist on "Funghi
Porcini", the Italian name of the mushroom Boletus edulis, commonly known as "penny bun")
is a solo project by James Braddell, 50% of 9 Lazy 9. Funki Porcini (a twist on "Funghi Porcini",
the Italian name of the mushroom Boletus edulis, commonly known as "penny bun") is a solo
project by James Braddell, 50% of 9 Lazy 9. After a decade penning film and TV music in Italy,
the producer decided to head to London and set up his own studio The Uterus Goldmine,
where he would use some of his commercial writing tricks to come up with Funki Porcini, one
of the most recognizable names on Ninja Tune's early roster. This was Trip Hop with a side
helping of very English humour, from the moniker itself to the record’s awkwardly suggestive
cover. Musically, Braddell laid out a template that would be traced over for years to come
with his combination of dusty Hip Hop rhythms and booming Dub bass. The swirling, reverb-
drenched samples just added an extra layer of thick smoke to an already bloodshot premise.

London Funk All Stars - London Funk Volume 1.

NOTE: also file under Breaks, Instrumental Hip Hop, Downtempo. The London Funk Allstars
were Jason Carter aka Mad Doctor X, Stefan Turner, William George and F J Carter, who
produced their own style of Dance music of which primarily combined foundational elements
of Funk and Trip Hop.

The Herbaliser - Remedies.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Instrumental Hip Hop. The Herbaliser is an English group
formed by Jake Wherry and Ollie Trattles in London, England during the early 1990s. Wherry
played guitar and bass in a number of Jazz, Funk and Rock bands in his teenage years. During
this time, he met Patrick Carpenter aka PC, later one of the DJs behind DJ Food, and through
him became aware of the Ninja Tune label. Trattles began DJing at 15 and played his first live
sets to London audiences a year later. The duo met years later at Wherry's Traintrax studio,
and began recording together, developed a jazzy instrumental style of Hip Hop, due to an
absence of available rappers. They passed their recordings on to Ninja Tune bosses Matt Black
and Jonathan More of Coldcut and were signed shortly thereafter. The result is "Remedies",
an album << awash in sticky jazz toffee and narcotic atmospheres >> (Peter Shapiro, in "Drum
'n' Bass: The Rough Guide").

Silent Poets – Drawing.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Downtempo.

Donut Productions – $19.95.

NOTE: also file under Instrumental Hip Hop. A group from San Fransisco formed in 1989 by
Marc Lariviere (Macaroonie), Noah Daar (DJ Gunga Din), and Josh Miller (J Squash) who
released their only album $19.95 on German label Marlboro Music in 1995, exclusively on CD.
The album was intended for Mo’ Wax in the UK, but only appeared in Germany, due to a deal
the two labels had. Today is very rare.

Nightmares On Wax - Smokers Delight.

NOTE: also file under Dub, Acid Jazz, Downtempo. Nightmares on Wax is George Evelyn, an
English DJ and record producer from Leeds. "Smokers Delight", his secondo album, was
included in Robert Dimery's "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" book in 2005. In
2015, Fact placed it at number 15 on the "50 Best Trip-Hop Albums of All Time" list.
Fila Brazillia – Maim That Tune.

NOTE: also file under Downtempo, Ambient. Fila Brazillia is an English electronica duo from
Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England, formed in 1990 by Steve Cobby and David McSherry.

GusGus – Gus Gus.

NOTE: also file under Leftfield, Downtempo. GusGus is an electronic music band from
Reykjavík, Iceland. GusGus' music is eclectic, and although primarily classified as Techno, Trip
Hop and House music, the band has experimented with other styles. They have remixed songs
of popular artists such as Björk, Depeche Mode, Moloko and Sigur Rós.
Shara Nelson - Friendly Fire.

NOTE: also file under Soul, Downtempo.

Jhelisa - Galactica Rush.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Soul. Jhelisa Anderson is a vocalist and producer. Her best
known track was "Friendly Pressure" (featured on this album), a tune that was remixed and
re-released many times. She's also been a guest singer for Björk (all backing vocals on the
"Debut" album), Paul Weller, The Shamen, Block 16, and A.P.E.. Also making guest
appearances with jazz boho's like Courtney Pine and Bob Belden.
Nitin Sawhney – Migration.

NOTE: also file under Breaks, Downtempo, Tribal.

Poe – Hello.

NOTE: also file under Leftfield, Alternative Rock. Poe is an American singer, songwriter, and
producer. Poe's musical style is a blend of Rock, Folk, and Electronica elements combined with
intimate lyrical compositions. Her first album, Hello, was described as a sample-rich amalgam
of Hip Hop, Rock, and Jazz. Lyrically, the album is filled with literary allusions, film nods, comic
book references, and psychological irony. "Hello" was critically acclaimed. Hits Magazine
called the record an << over-the-top PoMo masterpiece >>.
Whale - We Care.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock. Whale (Henrik Schyffert, Cia Berg, and Gordon Cyrus)
was a Swedish alternative rock group active from 1992 to 1999. "We Care" is their debut
album. Several tracks were produced in cooperation with Falcon or Tricky. Stephen Thomas
Erlewine of Allmusic rated it 4.5/5 stars and wrote << Taking elements of Trip Hop beats,
Heavy Metal guitars, sing-song Pop, and football chants, the band creates a joyously noisy
racket that emphasizes their humor and their sexiness >>. James Hunter of Rolling Stone rated
it 4/5 stars and wrote, << The trio satisfies a raging appetite for distorted guitars while
remembering punk and betraying an inevitable background in Abbaesque Pop >>.

Garbage - Garbage.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock. Garbage is an American rock band consisting of
Scottish singer Shirley Manson (vocals) and American musicians Duke Erikson (guitar, bass,
keyboards), Steve Marker (guitar, keyboards), and Butch Vig (drums, production). The band's
eponymous debut album was critically acclaimed upon its release, selling over four million
copies. The disc has a sound that << try to incorporate different styles and genres, throw it all
into a big melting pot and see what would happen >>, according to Vig. Vig explained that as
in his opinion << the most exciting bands are those who incorporate all those elements of
Punk, Funk, Techno, Hip Hop, etc >>. Garbage would attempt to do the same and << take
those influences and make them work in the context of a Pop song >>. Gil Kaufman of
Addicted to Noise described the album as a << surprisingly non-guitar rock mix of Ambient
Noise, shifting Trip Hop beats, grinding Jungle rhythms >>. Metro Weekly characterized the
album as << a heavy mix of Electronic Pop and guitar rock with samples, Electronica and Trip
Hop beats thrown into the mix >>.

Gavin Friday – Shag Tobacco.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Lounge, Downtempo. Friday is a Irish singer and
songwriter, composer, actor and painter. "Shag Tobacco", his third solo album, provided
another development in his musical approach with the choice of Tim Simenon (Bomb the
Bass) as producer. Simenon helped create a Dance-influenced album that ranges from
industrial slams to clean, elegant breaks, in many ways serving as the model for his following
work with Depeche Mode on "Ultra". There's more than a few hints of where Massive Attack
would end up on Mezzanine as well, as the low pulses and sudden guitar/drum hits on the
title track show - and the fact that the lead single from Shag Tobacco was named "Angel."
Bono and The Edge contribute backing vocals on "Little Black Dress".
Casino Royale – Sempre Più Vicini.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Dub. The disc is produced by Ben Young and features
sounds strongly influenced by the international Trip Hop and Acid Jazz scenes. In this work we
meet Rock sounds - especially in the guitars, sometimes distorted and sometimes psychedelic
- Funk elements - such as the powerful and consistent bass lines that make up the soul of the
disc - Jazz components, easily traceable in many piano lines, and Hip Hop techniques such as
samplings. "Sempre più vicini" is present in the Rolling Stone Italia ranking of the "100 most
beautiful Italian records ever" at position number 34. It is a conjunction album between the
previous "Dainamaita" (1993), still strongly rooted in Rock and in the hot Jamaican rhythms,
and the subsequent "Crx" (1997), emotional and dark, probably the best Italian Trip Hop
record ever.

Leftfield – Leftism.

NOTE: also file under Dub, House, Trance, Tribal. Leftfield are a British electronic music duo
formed in 1989 by Neil Barnes and Paul Daley. The group was very influential in the evolution
of electronic music in the 90s. Their debut album "Leftism" blending Dub, Breakbeat, and
House. It was shortlisted for the 1995 Mercury Music Prize but lost out to Portishead's
"Dummy". In a 1998 Q magazine poll, readers voted it the eightieth greatest album of all time,
while in 2000 Q placed it at number 34 in its list of the "100 Greatest British Albums Ever".
John Bush of the online music database AllMusic stated the album is not simply a Progressive
House album and that it << spans a wide range of influences (Tribal, Trance) >>. A review in
Slant Magazine commented that << Leftism eschews mainstream categorization and manages
to reside in the leftfield of almost all the electronic genres it propagates >>. In 2010, Clash
praised the album, which remains << a classic of the era and inspiration for many who
followed >>.

Massive Attack V Mad Professor – No Protection.

NOTE: also file under Dub, Downtempo. "No Protection" is a Dub remix of Massive Attack's
second album "Protection" by the British producer and sound engineer Mad Professor. Mad
Professor was contacted by Massive Attack after "Protection" was released to remix a song
for a single. After, the band asked Mad Professor to listen to more of the album to explore the
possibility of further remixes. The project then became a track by track remix of almost the
entire album. Mad Professor heavily edited the original material to form a slow, pulsating mix
in which the beat is emphasised, reverb is extensively used and the occasional vocals (many
of the tracks are almost entirely instrumental) fade in-and-out in typical dub fashion.
Various – Some Scientific Abstract Type Shit!.

Various – The Cream Of Trip Hop (Issue 2).

NOTE: Featuring The Sabres Of Paradise, Crustation, Dj Food, Up Bustle & Out, and more.

________________________________

1996
Archive - Londinium.

NOTE: Archive are a musical group based in London, England, whose music spans Electronic,
Trip Hop, Avant-garde, Post-Rock and Progressive Rock. Their debut album "Londinium" is a
pearl of dark Trip Hop in which the downtempo beat is diluted in suffused psychedelic Soul
atmospheres, spiced with strings and flute inserts that sound almost like chamber music, and
placed at the service of duets between female voice - that of the Iranian singer Roya Arab -
and rap - the rhymes of Rosko John. Londinium's shades are melanconic, autumnal, we could
define it as a disc of "urban intimism". Everything flows with perfect continuity, in a journey
to be repeated over and over again. The record is certainly one of the great masterpieces of
Trip Hop: it has affinities with the Massive Attack of "Protection" for Soul influences and rap
inserts, but with fewer cocktail-lounge sounds replaced instead by chamber-music cues, by
some guitar cues that even refer to Pink Floyd, and from a darker attitude. Londinium has its
own identity, worthy of being treated as a separate thing.

Nearly God - Nearly God.

NOTE: Nearly God is an album by Tricky, released in february 1996 under the pseudonym
"Nearly God", which originated from an interview during which Tricky was asked << so how
does it feel to be God... well, nearly God >>. The record was the result of a clause in his
recording contract with Island Records, which allowed him to release an album once a year
under a name other than his own. According to Tricky, << Island would never let me release
two Tricky albums in the same year >>. His official second album "Pre-Millennium Tension"
was released in September 1996. An austerely produced Trip Hop record, Nearly God was well
received by critics and featured collaborations between Tricky and artists such as Alison
Moyet, Björk, Neneh Cherry, Terry Hall (singer of The Specials), Cath Coffey and Martina
Topley-Bird. It was recorded in three weeks during the summer, in New York and London, and
Tricky describes it as << a compilation of exceptional yet unfinished demos >>. In Melody
Maker, Taylor Parkes deemed it << a mess, albeit a hugely affecting one, a stop-gap, when
three more months spent on arrangements and production would have fastered a
masterpiece to surpass "Maxinquaye" >>. In 2015, Fact magazine naming "Nearly God" the
eighteenth greatest Trip Hop album of all time.

Tricky - Pre-Millennium Tension.

NOTE: It was a conscious effort by Tricky to depart away from the Trip Hop label with which
critics had described his previous music. The album was mainly recorded in Jamaica, and
mixed in Spain (except track 3 recorded and mixed in New York). "Pre-Millennium Tension"
received positive reviews from critics, who found the record's music ambitious, and eclectic.
USA Today reviewer Elysa Gardner called it a dazzling Trip Hop album and Tricky << prolific,
innovative and fearlessly eccentric >>, comparing him to American musician Prince. In the
Chicago Tribune, Greg Kot said Tricky had transcended the boundaries of Trip Hop by drawing
upon and manipulating a number of styles, including Ambient, Drum and Bass, and Dancehall.
At the end of 1996, "Pre-Millennium Tension" was voted the ninth best album of the year in
the Pazz & Jop, an annual poll of American critics nationwide. It was later included in Q
magazine's "50 Heaviest Albums of All Time". In 2017, Nate Patrin of Pitchfork noted the
album's longevity, saying that the album's name << is the only obvious thing that tells you it’s
two decades old rather than two weeks >>.
Morcheeba - Who Can You Trust?.

NOTE: Morcheeba are an English electronic band formed in the mid-90s with founding
members vocalist Skye Edwards and the brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey on production. They
mix influences from Trip Hop, Folk-Rock and Downtempo. In 2014, Paul Godfrey left the band.
"Who Can You Trust?" is their debut studio album. Musician Magazine wrote that the band is
<< saved from Portishead comparisons mainly by their fondness for guitars >> and that their
<< laid-back beats and gentle, smoky tunes are enhanced by Ry Cooder-ish slide, funky wah-
wah, and other simple guitar flourishes, as well as a reappearing Hammond organ and some
occasional strings >>. Josef Woodard of Entertainment Weekly compared vocalist Skye
Edwards to << Sade filtered through Portishead >>.

Monk & Canatella - Care In The Community.

NOTE: Monk & Canatella is a Bristol duo formed by Simon Russell and Jim Johnston in the
early 1990s. Their debut album "Care in the Community" is undoubtedly one of Trip Hop's
forgotten masterpieces, probably overshadowed by the big names of the Bristol scene. Yet
Portishead themselves have often cited them as a reference, even including a track called "A
Tribute to Monk and Canatella" in their single "Numb", released in 1994 a year before Monk
& Canatella's debut with the 12'' "Fly Fishing". "Care in the Community" is a cinematic,
melancholy record, but imbued with a "punk approach" that reveals the extraordinary
influence the band has had on the whole Trip Hop. An album that any fan of the genre should
have in their collection.

Sneaker Pimps - Becoming X.

NOTE: Sneaker Pimps are an English electronic music band, founded in 1994 by electronic
musician Liam Howe and guitarist Chris Corner. The band takes its name from an article the
Beastie Boys published in their Grand Royal magazine about a man they hired to track down
classic sneakers. "Becoming X", their debut studio album, is a Trip Hop album, featuring
Alternative Rock and orchestral elements, marked the only appearance of Kelli Ali as lead
singer before she was asked to leave the band (Chris Corner replaced her for the subsequent
albums). Was a great commercially successful, thanks to "6 Underground" and "Spin Spin
Sugar" singles. Calvin Bush from Muzik defined it << spiky indie pop in a Garbage-meets-
Portishead fashion >>, noting the singles "Tesko Suicide" and "6 Underground" came across
like << an indie kid version of Morcheeba with slashier guitars >>. Ryan Schreiber on Pitchfork
likening Sneaker Pimps to << an electrified version of Sade >>. The album was released in US
on 1997 featuring the famous Nellee Hooper Remix of "6 Underground" as bonus track.
Hooverphonic - A New Sterephonic Sound Spectacular.

NOTE: Hooverphonic is a Belgian band that formed in 1995 by original members Alex Callier,
Frank Duchêne, and Raymond Geerts . Though originally categorized as a Trip Hop group, they
quickly expanded their sound to the point where they could no longer be described as a
singular genre, but rather encompass Alternative Rock, Synth-Pop, Electropop, and a mixture
of others. The format of music they played can best be described as << 60's-inspired naive
pop >>. Their debut album "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" is the only released with
lead singer Liesje Sadonius. Memorable the single "2 Wicky", which samples Isaac Hayes'
1969 rendition of "Walk On By", as well as "Le Voile d'Orphée" by Pierre Henry.

Lowpass - fear Of The Flood.

NOTE: A semi-unknown Trip Hop band from Belgium. Lowpass is the group of Mario
Vaerewijck, who previously had been experimenting in a group called Insekt. Nobody seems
to have info on this band. In Lowpass, Vaerewijck is accompanied by Marlon Waghemans
(who had been playing in the guitar band Jason Rawhead before) and by the Canadian singer
Juliet Caron. Their first and only album "Fear of the Flood" was very well received, a bit
parallel to the first album by another much more famous Belgian Trip Hop group: "A New
Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" by Hooverphonic. << A didgeridoo sets the tone of Fear of
the Flood, the debut-cd of Lowpass. Not exactly an instrument you would associate with
words like Bristol, Tricky, or Portishead. Yet Lowpass borrows from the TripHop-dictionary,
without giving in on originality and inventivity. Etheric drum-loops and luscious samples are
percerctly combined with the mesmerizing voice of the Canadian J.C.Carion >> (houbi.com).
After the album, they succesfully proved their "triphop/breakbeats/guitars/voice-that-stands-
out" also has a place on stage. They played the Lowlands-festival in Holland and managed to
fill the techno-tent at the Belgian Pukkelpop festival. In 1998, Juliet Caron left the band to
work on a solo career. Instead of continuing with Lowpass, Vaerewijck & Waghemans started
a new band with English singer Nina Babet as Akyra. And FEAR OF THE FLOOD was thus
unjustly forgotten...

Neneh Cherry - Man.

NOTE: Third studio album by Neneh Cherry. Preceding the album release, the famous duet
with Youssou N'Dour called "7 Seconds" was released as a single to promote Senegalese
singer studio set "The Guide (Wommat)". Almost two years later, the common track was
added also to the Cherry's album.

Statik Sound System – Tempesta.

NOTE: Bristol collective active until the early 2000s.

Statik Sound System – Tempesta II.

Ingrid Schroeder – Bee Charmer.

NOTE: Canadian-born Ingrid Schroeder lives in London. Beginning her career as a session
singer, recording and touring with artists varying greatly in musical style and attitude. Her
soulful Folk-inspired songs developed alongside a growing interest in Dance and Electronic
music. Beats mixed with sparse atmospheric arrangements and lyrical storytelling set the tone
of her first solo album "Bee Charmer", produced by DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill with
contributions of Goldie and Pressure Drop.
Purple Penguin – De-Tuned.

NOTE: English Trip Hop duo formed by Ben Dubuisson and Scott Hendy. In a jazzed-out vein,
"De-Tuned" manages a few twists with some funky grooves and '70s Fusion tweaks. Good as
all the early Ninja Tune releases, similar in style but with more melancholy.

Jay-Jay Johanson – Whiskey.

NOTE: Jay-Jay Johanson, is a Swedish singer-songwriter, known for his melancholic

atmospheres. His debut album "Whiskey" was characterized by its jazzy vocals over trippy,
film noir arrangements.
Postcolor - Postcolor.

NOTE: Trip Hop band from St. Petersburg, Russia. "Postcolor" is their first and only album,
made with the contribution of the voice of the British singer Alice Brown, specially invited to
record the album. All the compositions are permeated by a subtle melancholy. Portishead
fans will particularly enjoy the band.

Lamb - Lamb.

NOTE: also file under Drum n Bass, Downtempo, Experimental. Lamb is an electronic music
duo formed in Manchester in 1996 by producer Andy Barlow and singer-songwriter Louise
Rhodes. Their musical style is a distinctive mix of Trip Hop, Jazz, Dub, Breaks and Drum n Bass.
The band produces experimental work with a distinctive production style, which includes
passionate lyrical delivery.
Olive - Extra Virgin.

NOTE: also file under Downtempo, Drum n Bass, House, Ambient. Olive was a British Trip Hop
group from London, England. The founding membership consisted of producer,
instrumentalist and songwriter Tim Kellett, producer and keyboard programmer Robin Taylor-
Firth, and singer Ruth-Ann Boyle. Kellett was a member of Simply Red for their first nine
years, as well as an occasional collaborator with UK Pop-Soul band Lighthouse Family. Taylor-
Firth was one of the original members of Nightmare on Wax. Boyle used to sing in local bands
in Sunderland, where she is from. Extra Virgin is their debut album. The album includes the
single "You're Not Alone", which originally reached number 42 in the UK Singles Chart in 1996
and when re-released in 1997 it reached number one. Two other singles were released from
the album: "Outlaw" (UK No. 14) and "Miracle" (UK No. 41). The trip hop influence of Massive
Attack and Portishead, while in small quantities, are evident, mixed in with Dub and synth-
based electronic dance.

Bowery Electric - Beat.

NOTE: also file under Shoegaze, Ambient. American Indie Rock/shoegaze/Trip Hop band
formed by Lawrence Chandler and Martha Schwendener, founded in New York in 1994 and
disbanded in 2000. "Beat", their second album, is a jewel that speaks for itself. A risky
formula to make it the essence? Portishead's Trip Hop magically and masterfully fused with
the lunar reverberations of My Bloody Valentine. An almost apocalyptic Ambient that
sometimes recalls certain Boards of Canada, at other times (see "Fear of Flying") the
legendary Suicides (about New York) ... A nocturnal and vital beat that alternates with deep,
mysterious, disturbing lakes sound. Melody Maker named the album the "rock LP of the
year", and The Wire praised the album as "genre-defining". In a 2016 review of the album's
reissue, The Wire wrote: << This music hasn't aged a bit. ... [It] remains an unexplored road to
a wondrous promontory only Bowery Electric have ever reached >>. A masterpiece.

Björk – Telegram.

NOTE: also file under Drum n Bass, IDM, Abstract, Modern Classical. Telegram is a remix
album by Björk. The record is a collection of remixes of several tracks from "Post", which had
all previously appeared as B-sides of the UK versions of the singles of the album, except the
"Enjoy" remix which was previously unreleased. All of the songs on Post were remixed,
excluding "The Modern Things" and "It's Oh So Quiet". The collection also included one new
song entitled "My Spine" which was originally slated to appear on "Post" but was pushed out
by "Enjoy", becoming the B-side to the UK "It's Oh So Quiet" single instead.
Dj Shadow - Endtroducing...

NOTE: also file under Cut-up/DJ, Instrumental Hip Hop. DJ Shadow’s first album is the kind of
debut that places the bar so high in its mastery of a new musical vocabulary that even its
creator can never hope to better it, forever living beneath the weight of what he’s
accomplished. It is an instrumental work crafted by a Hip Hop fanatic, composed entirely of
samples from vinyl records, accumulated by the artist from his trips to Rare Records, a record
shop in his native Sacramento, where he spent several hours each day searching for music
(the album cover is taken here). Shadow produced "Endtroducing" over two years, using an
Akai MPC60 sampler and little other equipment. He edited and layered samples to create new
tracks of varying moods and tempos. The disc samples music of various genres, including Jazz,
Funk, and Psychedelia, as well as films and interviews. "Endtroducing" was ranked highly on
various lists of the best albums of 1996, and has been acclaimed by critics as one of the
greatest albums of the 1990s. It is considered a landmark recording in Instrumental Hip Hop
and Trip Hop. In 2020, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Endtroducing 329th on its list of the
"500 greatest albums of all time".

Dj Krush - Milight.
NOTE: also file under Abstract, Instrumental Hip Hop.

Dj Krush & Toshinori Kondo - Ki-oku.

NOTE: also file under Future Jazz, Downtempo. A collaborative studio album by Japanese jazz
trumpeter Toshinori Kondo and Japanese producer DJ Krush. The experiment - ahead of its
time - by Miles Davis and Easy Mo Bee (see the 1992 sheet) heralded it: the collision between
avant-garde Jazz and Trip Hop was destined to happen. Since then, experimental musicians
around the world have been keen to open a conversation with younger electronic producers,
and Trip Hop (as well as Drum n Bass) was an obvious crash pad, considering its liberal theft of
the genre through sampling. "Ki-Oku" is the master example of this collision, with Krush that
concocted what is quite possibly his masterwork. The tracks presents soporific laid back
soundscapes, a masterfully restrained atmosphere which is both melancholic and soothing.
Kondo's elegant playing over gloomy sampling and Krush's beats is quite breathtaking. In
2015, Fact placed "Ki-Oku" at number 25 on its list of the "best Trip Hop albums of all time".

Dj Cam - Abstract Manifesto.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Instrumental Hip Hop. Abstract Manifesto is one of Cam
lesser-known releases, a Japan-only album that tapped into the same minimal approach as
Krush with added jazz flourishes and junglistic detours. "No Competition" remains one of his
best compositions to date, and a staple of sets from the era. Fact magazine named the disc
the ninth best Trip Hop album of all time.

Dj Cam - Substances.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Instrumental Hip Hop.

Dj Vadim - U.S.S.R. Repertoire (The Theory Of

Verticality).

NOTE: also file under Abstract.

in Swindon, United Kingdom. The band has proven versatile over the years, experimenting
with Techno, Breakbeat, Industrial, Dub and Jazz while touring the world and influencing
major acts such as Nine Inch Nails, the Chemical Brothers and the Prodigy. Band's earlier work
has been credited with influencing the rise of the Trip Hop, Big Beat, and Drum n Bass genres.
"Subliminal Sandwich" is their fifth album. The album is more experimental than the group's
prior material, composed of lengthier pieces that incorporate more Ambient textures. In
2015, Fact Magazine ranked the album at number 47 in its list of "The 50 Best Trip-Hop
Albums of All Time," saying << it remains an interesting offering, drawing links between Trip
Hop, Dub, Industrial and Ambient with a touch of psychedelia >>.

band founded in London in 1993 by Ali Friend (double bass), Richard Thair (drums), and David
Ayers (guitar). The three core members are also joined by various guest musicians and
vocalists on different records. "Prince Blimey", their first album, is basically an Acid Jazz
record. But the trio managed to characterize their style in a more contemporary way, touching
on Trip Hop and Drum n Bass without ever seeming forced. According to music journalist
Jason Ankeny of AllMusic, << the British Acid Jazz trio [are] notable for their pioneering
synthesis of acoustic instruments and electronic textures >>.

following from the release.

Arto Lindsay - Mundo Civilizado.

NOTE: also file under Bossa Nova, Downtempo. Arto Lindsay is an American guitarist, singer,
record producer and experimental composer, influenced by Pop, Electronica, Samba, and
Bossa Nova. "Mundo Civilizado", made with the contribution of Dj Spooky on turntables, is a
synthesis of Lindsay's various artistic inclinations / influences up until this point: the new-
wave of DNA, the downtempo of The Golden Palominos, Brazilian samba he grew up loving as
a kid and Trip Hop trickery straight out of' 90s, all coalescing into something entirely new: an
album of "Electronic Samba" whose primary fascination is its sensual, soothing, erotic vibe.
Beautiful, beautiful album.
Thievery Corporation - Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi.

NOTE: also file under Future Jazz, Dub, Bossanova, Downtempo. Thievery Corporation is an
American electronic music duo consisting of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton. Their musical style
mixes elements of Acid JAzz, Dub, Reggae, Middle Eastern music, Trip Hop and Brazilian
music, including Bossa Nova. "Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi" is their debut studio album.

from Viva! La Woman, which was produced by Mitchell Froom, featured lyrics related to food,

Water" (with a sample of Ennio Morricone), is a Trip-Pop song that was a modest radio and
Dance hit.

electronic band formed in London, England by Maxi Jazz, Sister Bliss and Rollo. The group has
often collaborated with Dido, Rollo's younger sister. "Reverence" is their debut album.

Jaz Klash – Thru The Haze.

and Rob Smith), plus the DJ and producer The Angel.
The Aloof – Sinking.

NOTE: Also file under IDM, Dub, Downtempo. The Aloof were a British electronic music group
formed in London, England, in 1990. The group consisted of Ricky Barrow, Gary Burns, Jagz
Kooner, Richard Thair, and Dean Thatcher. "Sinking" is the second studio album by the band.
following the rave-influenced style debut album "Cover the Crime" (1994), "Sinking" brought
the band into a darker, more mellow direction, as the result of the group's desire to deliver a
"band" feel, aided by the members' newfound disillusionment with Club Culture. The record
fuses styles of Dub, Trip Hop, Techno and Jungle music and incorporates string arrangements
and sombre lyrics. In 2000, it was named the 46th best Dance album of all time in the final
edition of the book "All Time Top 1000 Albums".

Agricantus – Tuareg.

NOTE: also file under Ambient, Tribal, Downtempo. Founded in 1979 in Palermo, Italy,
Agricantus (from Latin: the singing of the wheat field) is a band that has been formed by
various line-ups and features a blend of musical styles, languages and dialects, modern
sounds and archaic musical instruments, through three decades of music. They reached
artistic maturity in the second half of the 90s, a particularly prosperous period for the
production of World Music in Italy. Since 1995 the band has produced various concept albums
in which they often combine a mixture of European and non-European languages with the
Sicilian dialect, starting to make heavy use of Electronics alongside acoustic instruments from
various parts of the world. "Tuareg" - which sees in two tracks the participation of the Italian
Trip Hop duo Upanishad (see 2001) - can be considered their most representative album, with
which Agricantus has received several international awards.

Üstmamò – Üst.

artists such as Casino Royale, Delta V, Raiz, and others), and markedly marks the transition
from Post-Punk atmospheres to innovative Trip Hop / Downtempo sounds, although basically
"Üst" is an Alternative Rock album. The subsequent "Stard'Ust" (see 1998) will further
deepen the links with electronics.
Howie B. – Music For Babies

as Howie B, is a Scottish musician, producer and DJ who has worked with various artists
including Björk, U2, Tricky, Soul II Soul, Robbie Robertson and The Gift. His debut album

Guardian called the album "superb," writing that it << is imbued throughout with a funky,
chilled-out ambience >>.

Tek 9 – It's Not What You Think It Is !?!!.

NOTE: also file under Instrumental Hip Hop, Drum n Bass, Soul. Tek-9, one of the earliest
active aliases of Dennis McFarlane from the group 4 Hero, originally used for his solo

________________________________

1997
Portishead - Portishead.

NOTE: Without a shadow of a doubt one of the immortal masterpieces of Trip Hop. Three
years after "Dummy" Portishead are back with an aptly named album, which we could
actually defnined even like... More Portishead than Portishead! Barrow, Gibbons and Utley
have succeeded not only in the effort to give a worthy follow up to "Dummy", but to
overcome it, whit what has ended up being considered the brand of the band: melancholy,
very loads beats, few surgical samples, electric guitars and noir, super cinematic atmospheres,
thanks to a wise use of strings and orchestra. With "Portishead", the band chose to eschew
sampling other records, which had a defining feature of their debut album "Dummy". Instead,
they created original pieces which they samples and weaved into the songs, resulting in a
more textured sound. The only song to employ samples is "Only You", which incorporates
elements of Ken Thorne's "Inspector Clouseau" and The Pharcyde's "She Said". "Western
Eyes" is listed as sampling "Hookers & Gin" by the Sean Atkins Experience in the album's liner
notes. In reality, this song does not exist; like most of the samples on the album, it was
created by the band.

Portishead - Glory Times.

NOTE: Glory Times is a 2CD compilation album by English band Portishead which contains
various remixes of two songs ("Sour Times" and "Glory Box") from "Dummy" as well as the
theme from their short film "To Kill a Dead Man".

Crustation With Bronagh Slevin - Bloom.

NOTE: Bristol-based Trip Hop trio formed by Ian Dark, Mark Tayler and Stig Manley featuring
the voice of Irish singer Bronagh Slevin. "Bloom" is one of the hidden classics of Trip Hop, a
deliciously dubwise album, full of shuffling beats and dreamy and misty qualities. “Purple”
injects a bit of Pop peppiness into the proceedings, but the majority of the tracks take a
darker route. "Face the Waves" and “Down Down” are like half-heard memories that you
recall just as you wake up. "Flame" is a twisted love song, while "Ride On" is a fairy-tale dirge,
sad and moody. An overlooked gem.

Mono - Formica Blues.

NOTE: Mono was a British duo formed by Martin Virgo and Siobhan de Maré. "Formica
Blues", one of the gretatest Trip Hop record of the 90s, is their first and only album. The
"basic formula" of the record as to wallow in the sound of television and film theme tunes of
the Sixties and Seventies, underpined with jazzy breakbeats and synthy atmospheres. Melody
Maker, in an overwhelmingly positive review, calls the album << unutterably gorgeous >>. The
album was subsequently rated number 49 on the newspaper's top albums of the year list
(Portishead's "Portishead" was rated number 18 on the same list). BBC broadcaster Mark
Radcliffe listed Formica Blues among his top three albums of 1997, calling it << Atmospheric
soundtracks for films that haven't been made yet >>.

Attica Blues - Attica Blues.

NOTE: Attica Blues is a British Trip Hop band formed in 1994 by producers Charlie Williams
and Tony Nwachukwu and singer Roba El-Essawy, named after an album by saxophonist
Archie Shepp. The eponymous "Attica Blues" is one of Mo 'Wax's best products, a skilled
exercise in sampling, programming and arranging, when it took more than a few mouse clicks
to do so.

Alpha - Come From Heaven.

NOTE: Alpha is an English Trip Hop group, comprises founding member Corin Dingley, vocalist
and lyricist Wendy Stubbs and Hannah Collins; other founding member, Andy Jenks, left the
group before the release of their 2007 album, "The Sky Is Mine". Originally working under the
name "Ariel", the duo of Dingley and Jenks came together in 1995 after both had worked on
various projects in the Bristol area. Their appreciated debut album, "Come from Heaven", was
the first release on Massive Attack's Melankolic label in 1997. It includes vocal contributions
from Martin Barnard, Wendy Stubbs, and Helen White. Larry Flick of Billboard stated that the
album << combines the sample-happy experimental sound of the electronic underground
with traditional pop sounds >>. Randall Roberts of CMJ New Music Monthly called it << slow,
deep, sexy nighttime music, so richly recorded and alive with pleasure that only the extremely
sexually repressed could not feel it down there >>.

Mandalay - Empathy.

NOTE: Mandalay were a Trip Hop duo from the UK, composed of multi-instrumentalist Saul
Freeman (formerly of Thieves) and multi-instrumentalist-composer-singer Nicola Hitchcock.
"Empathy" is their debut studio album.

Rickie Lee Jones – Ghostyhead.

NOTE: Rickie Lee Jones is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and author. Over the
course of a career that spans five decades, she has recorded in various musical styles
including Rock, R&B, Pop, Soul, and Jazz. A two-time Grammy Award winner (from seven
nominations), Jones was listed in 1999 at No. 30 on VH1's "100 Greatest Women in Rock &
Roll". Emphasizing her experimentation approach, Jones embraced electronic music for
"Ghostyhead", that found the artist employing beats, loops, and electronic rhythms, and also
showcased Jones' connection with the Trip Hop movement of the mid-to-late 1990s.

Tranquility Bass – Let The Freak Flag Fly.

NOTE: Tranquility Bass was the stage name of Michael Adam Kandel (1968 - 2015), an
American musician whose music has been variously categorized as Ambient House, Trip Hop,
and Funk Rock. According to Billboard, "Let the Freak Flag Fly" led to Kandel developing << a
cult following that spans several genres beyond the Dance realm >>. The Los Angeles Times
gave the album a rating of three stars (out of four) and described it as << the electronic
progeny of Acid Rock >>. As also reviewed favorably by the journalist Greg Kot, who described
it as << a grand journey through nearly a century of recorded music, a densely layered
montage of electronic manipulations and live instruments made under conditions that were
certainly unusual >>.
Invisible Pair Of Hands – Disparation.

NOTE: Bristol based Downtempo, Jazz, Experimental, Trip Hop band featuring Jesse D. Vernon,
Jim Barr, John Baggott and Toby Pascoe.

De-Phazz - Detunized Gravity.

NOTE: De-Phazz is a Downtempo Jazz ensemble integrating modern turntablism and elements
of Soul, Latin, Trip Hop and Drum n Bass into a lounge music sound. De-Phazz is led by Pit
Baumgartner, a German producer who has varied the lineup of artists for every new album.
Some regular members are Barbara Lahr, Karl Frierson and Pat Appleton.
A Forest Mighty Black – Mellowdramatic.

NOTE: A Forest Mighty Black is one of the outposts for Jazzy Downtempo in Germany. Fronted
by producer Bernd Kunz, it gained praise for their refreshing blend of Brazilian and Fusion
influences with Trip Hop.

Casino Royale - CRX.

NOTE: Probably the most beautiful Italian Trip Hop album. Born in 1987, Casino Royale began
their career as a ska-band. Always close to the Hip Hop scene in their city, Milan, in the early
90s they began a path of experimentation that saw them contaminate genres such as Funk,
Reggae, Hip Hop and electronic tout-court. "DAINAMAITA" (1993) and "SEMPRE PIU VICINI"
(1995) reflect the influences of groups such Massive Attack and Stereo MC's, but also of the
underground rock scene of their city. In 1997 the group released "CRX", unanimously
considered their masterpiece. A "hardcore" Trip Hop album, which for the first time - after the
forays timid and not always 100% convincing by other bands - brings the Bristol Sound to Italy,
demonstrating definitively that the urban worries of Rap can also pass through slowed
rhythms and soporific and smoky atmospheres. The album has an international reach also
thanks to the production of Tim Holmes (Primal Scream, Death In Vegas). Holmes has the
undoubted merit of directing the sound towards bewitching roundnesses. The guitars and the
voices of Casino Royale does the rest: the tracks are all conceived as anesthetic trips between
the folds of a sound that starts from the Bristol, of course, but ranges up to psychedelic
horizons. A disc that any Trip Hop lover should have in his collection.

Madreblu – Prima Dell'Alba.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Downtempo. Italian musical group that mixes Pop-
Rock, Trip Hop and Ambient born in Lodi in 1995 and composed by Raffaella Destefano
(vocals) and Gino Marcelli (piano and keyboards), who until 1998 joined Valerio Artusi on
keyboards.

La Crus - Dentro Me.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Ambient, Downtempo. La Crus born in Milan, Italy, in
1994, from the union of Cesare Malfatti, that after some year will be one of the founding
members of The Dining Rooms (maybe the most famous Italian Trip Hop band abroad), Mauro
Ermanno Giovanardi, singer from indie-rock scene, and Alex Cremonesi, extraordinary lyricist
and estimator of Electronic music. The project basically intends to combine in a bewitching
mix the great tradition of Italian auteur music with new trends in electronics. "Dentro me"
(inside me) is musically "the most Trip Hop album" of their discography, which except for
some episodic incursions, has settled on a solid balance between Downtempo and a melodic
Pop-Rock. Beyond the labels, "Dentro me" is above all a LA CRUS work, wich of the password
it is always: introspection. The characteristic of the group is in fact an "Aristotelian
melancholy" which is well known to all fans of the genre and goes well with the atmospheric
and rainy sound of Bristol. A "spleen" of Baudelairian memory that touches the sublime here,
like is so cumbersome, brainy, intimate. And poignant. The depth of Cremonesi's lyrics (which
earned him the Targa Tenco, one of the most prestigious awards of Italian music), Giovanardi's
cavernous voice, marries to a refined use of electronics, through hypnotic and almost
soporific loops and samples. The atmospheres are precisely soft, rarefied, dreamy, thanks to
the extensive use of instruments such as the acoustic and electric guitar, strings, harmonica
and trumpet. Ultimately, an album that shows a lot the influence of Italian songwriting, and
which can make it difficult to chew for who cannot grasp the poetic nuances of the Italian
language. But that hits the extraordinary goal of entering to the Trip Hop compartment, for
the shrewdness use of the samples and beats, and the creation of a "sound carpet" that has
nothing to envy in that of other more famous bands.

Björk - Homogenic.

NOTE: also file under IDM, Synth-Pop, Modern Classical, Experimental. Third studio album by
Björk. It was Produced by Björk herself, Mark Bell, Guy Sigsworth, Howie B, and Markus
Dravs. The album marked a stylistic change, focusing on music combining Electronic beats and
string instruments with songs in tribute to her native country Iceland. Upon its release,
"Homogenic" received widespread critical acclaim, being listed among the best albums of its
era and genre by numerous journalists. Writing for Beats Per Minute, Cole Zercoe felt the
album represented a pinnacle work of Trip Hop, forming part of << a sort of holy trinity of this
musical aesthetic >> along with Massive Attack's "Mezzanine" and Portishead's "Dummy".
Smoke City - Flying Away.

NOTE: also file under Latin, Downtempo. Smoke City was an English band formed by Chris
Franck, Marc Brown and Nina Miranda that blended Acid Jazz and Trip Hop, borrowing from
Brazilian styles such as Samba and Bossa nova. Some lyrics have excerpts in Portuguese. They
are best known for their single "Underwater Love", which was a major hit in 1997, after being
used in a Levi's television advertisement, "Mermaids".

Laika - Sounds Of The Satellites.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Downtempo. Second studio album by British band
Laika. the disc << is even better than its predecessor, a simultaneous expansion of the band's
sonic palette and a brilliant refinement of their past innovations >> (Jason Ankeny of
AllMusic).
Silent Poets – For Nothing.

NOTE: also file under Leftfield, Downtempo.

Gus Gus – Polydistortion.

NOTE: also file under Electro, Downtempo, Experimental. Second studio album by GusGus.
The songs "Why?" and the band's cover of Slowblow's "Is Jesus Your Pal?" feature Emilíana
Torrini on vocals.
Kid Loco - A Grand Love Story.

NOTE: also file under Instrumental Hip Hop, Downtempo. Debut album of Jean-Yves Prieur
a.k.a. Kid Loco, French musician, DJ, remixer and producer. M. Tye Comer of CMJ New Music
Report said, << When Kid Loco's "A Grande Love Story" was released in his homeland of
France, the excitement caused by the producer's cinematic, downtempo Trip-Pop caused
swells even on U.S. shores >>. John Bush of AllMusic gave the album 4.5 stars out of 5,
describing it as << an irresistible romp through the lighthearted, pastoral side of Trip Hop by
way of orchestral Pop paragons like Bacharach, Gainsbourg, and Love >>.

The Herbaliser - Blow Your Headphones.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Breaks, Hip Hop. << Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba’s The
Herbalizer project was a fine example of Trip Hop’s most visible back-and-forth with "proper"
Hip Hop. They weren’t afraid to work with emcees, and on Blow Your Headphones, their
second album, they found a kindred spirit in Natural Resource’s What? What?, now better
known as Jean Grae. She added an important element to Wherry and Teeba’s jazz-flecked
backdrops, and while it’s certainly true that many of trip-hop’s consumers were looking for a
safer alternative to charged US rap, The Herbalizer walked the tightrope admirably, and were
markedly more successful in bridging the genres than many of their peers, who buckled when
attempting to integrate emcees >> (Fact magazine placed it at number 33 on the "50 Best Trip-
Hop Albums of All Time" list).

Tosca - Opera.

NOTE: also file under Dub, Downtempo. Tosca are an Austrian music group consisting of
Richard Dorfmeister (of Kruder & Dorfmeister) and Rupert Huber. Various of their albums are
considered milestones of the Downtempo genre. The musical trademark of Tosca is a cheerful
laid-back feel that emanates a warm, sexy, and occasionally melancholic atmosphere.
"Opera", the debut album, combines new material and previously released singles, including
"Chocolate Elvis". << Irresistibly funky >> (BBC), << the blues, and the thick sultry bass, makes
it as sexy and melancholy as cigarette smoke after a one-night stand in a strange city >>
(Mixmag).

D.J. Shadow – Q-Bert Mix-Live!!.

NOTE: also file under Instrumental Hip Hop, Breakbeat, Breaks. Richard Quitevis, known by
his stage name DJ Q-Bert, is an American turntablist and composer. He was awarded
America's Best DJ in 2010, was DMC USA Champion 1991 (solo) and achieved titles as DMC
World Champion in 1992 and 1993. The mix was recorded live during a performance of the
turntablist group Invisibl Skratch Piklz in San Francisco, CA.

DJ Krush – Holonic 'The Self Megamix'.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Cut-up/DJ. A "mixtape" by the Japanese DJ / producer made
using only his songs. Containing tracks (or fragments of them) from the 1994 to the 1997
albums, "Holonic" - from greek holos, "all" - is an excellent introduction to the work and art of
DJ Krush.

released on their own label, Ninja Tune.

Sweden, consisting of Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson. Vocals have been provided by
singers such as Ane Brun, Yukimi Nagano, Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen, Rob Gallagher and Mikael
Sundin. Their name is a shortened version of a Swedish word meaning "cooperation". Their
orchestrated sound is achieved by slowly putting together thousands of small clips from
records until the songs are ready. "Sons of Koop" is certainly their most Trip Hop album.
Up, Bustle And Out - Light 'Em Up, Blow 'Em Out.

NOTE: also file under Breaks, Downtempo.

Pressure Drop - Elusive.

She was one half of Hip Hop duo Groove Garden, alongside DJ Atsushi. Groove Garden was
signed by Tommy Boy, and the pair went on to open for Digable Planets on their first national
tour. After the dissolution of the band, Ambersunshower left her label and temporarily retired
from music to take care of her ailing grandfather, after whom her debut album, Walter T.
Smith, was named. Mia Dinelly of the popular 1990s Los Angeles zine Female FYI described
the album as << stripped down funk with a gritty edge, the lyrics raw testaments of love,
delivered in her versatile, sometimes dissonant voice >>. In 2001, she appeared on Tricky's
album Blowback, singing on the tracks "Over Me", "You Don't Wanna" and "Your Name".
Craig Armstrong – The Space Between Us.

NOTE: also file under Modern Classical, Downtempo. Craig Armstrong is a Scottish composer
of modern orchestral music, electronica and film scores. He graduated from the Royal
Academy of Music in 1981, and has since written music for the Royal Shakespeare Company,
the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta. He sees no difference in

"Protection", after which the band formed their Melankolic record label releasing his first two
solo albums. "The Space Between Us" see Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins contributes on

musician and composer. He worked as a DJ before releasing several solo albums that have
incorporated elements of Trip Hop, Big Beat, Electronic and Rock. "Let's Get Killed" is his
second album. Holmes grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland as the youngest of ten children.
By the age of 15 he had begun to DJ in his local pubs and bars, playing Soul, Jazz, Rock and
Disco. This eclecticism would remain into adulthood, and is a feature of his DJ sets. When he
was 17, Holmes visited New York City, spending time in the South Bronx, Washington Square
and Central Park areas. He took a DAT recorder with him as he explored the city, and taped
conversations with many people he spoke to. Holmes kept the recordings for over ten years,
using them as the basis for "Let's Get Killed", so called because on one occasion Holmes and
his associates were << ...chased by eight guys through the South Bronx who were after our
expensive audio equipment >> (MTV. Retrieved 9 April 2009). Holmes used the recordings he
made of conversations and other street-level noise as samples on the album. These snippets
of conversation were often spoken by people from New York's cultural underbelly, including
prostitutes, pimps and drug-dealers. The record contains a wide variety of styles within the
electronica spectrum, including Techno, Breakbeats, Trip Hop and Drum n Bass. The NME said,
<< Holmes both evokes the endless possibilities, claustrophobia and madness of The Big
Apple and offers a critique... Not bad at all for a trendy DJ >>. On the strength of the album,
Holmes won Best Rock Artist at Ireland's National Entertainment Awards, the first time it was
awarded to a dance artist. "Let's Get Killed" was also included in the book "1001 Albums You
Must Hear Before You Die".

Electronic, Krautrock, Dub and Industrial. The band's sound is constantly changing. Most of
the tracks of "Dead Elvis", their debut, are mainly based in Dub and Dance music, with Rock
and Trip Hop influences. This was the only Death in Vegas album to feature original member
Steve Hellier. Shortly after the release of the album, Hellier left the band and was replaced by
Tim Holmes (Primal Scream), who had already been involved with mixing and engineering
tracks on the album.
Mulu – Smiles Like A Shark.

the Week on Mark and Lard's BBC Radio One show, and reached #50 in the UK Singles Chart.

Federation – Headspinz.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz, Downtempo. Federation began in 1991 when Si John (singer,
songwriter, multi-instrumentalist) and Alex Swift (programmer, bassist) teamed up with Julie
Lockhart (vocals) to produce "Life So Free" for Bristol's charity compilation "The Hard Sell".
Mo Wax's James Lavelle realised that The Feds had something that should be heard on a
wider plain and so signed them as part of the initial stable of acts that formed a more jazz
based feel to the Mo' Wax approach. After the success of "Flower To The Sun" (1994), the
debut album, the Feds went on tour in the United States, Japan and Europe. Along the way
they have played legendary events like Glastonbury and influential concerts at The Jazz Café,
as well as supporting artists such as Galliano, Roy Ayers and Gil Scott-Heron. After releasing a
new Acid Jazz album, "Earthloop" (1995), the Feds moved to Cup Of Tea Records and changed
their style: Trip Hop Downtempo and Drum & Bass with a Jazz attitude became their new
wave.

path that sees her experimenting with Electronics. "Waves", her first debut album, plays on a
blend of Acid Jazz, Trip Hop and Drum n Bass looking at recent trends in English Dance music.

track by Alessio Bertallot (rapper, musician, DJ and radio host also known for being one of the
biggest supporters of Trip Hop and Electronics in Italy).
Bran Van 3000 - Glee.

Tim 'Love' Lee – Confessions Of A Selector.

NOTE: also file under House, Downtempo. Tim Lee, also known as Tim 'Love' Lee is an English
musician, record producer and DJ. As founder and boss of Tummy Touch Records had an
relevant part to play in the development of Downbeat and Trip Hop, not least thanks to his
discovery of future genre stars Groove Armada."Confessions of a Selector", his debut album,
is among Fact magazine's "50 best Trip Hop albums of all time". The hallmarks of the genre
are there, but prettied up with luscious tropical vistas and an eccentric (but smart) cut-and-
paste quality.

Air – Premiers Symptomes.

NOTE: also file under Ambient, Downtempo. Air is a French duo from Versailles, consisting of
Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel. The band is influenced by a wide variety of musical
styles: Dream Pop, Downtempo, Chillout, Trip Hop, Ambient and Space Rock. Premiers
Symptômes (English: First Symptoms) is their debut EP. It consists of singles issued between
1995 and 1997.

Fila Brazillia – Luck Be A Weirdo Tonight.

NOTE: also file under Breaks, Downtempo.

The Avalanches – El Producto.

NOTE: also file under Breaks. The Avalanches are an electronic music group from Melbourne,
Australia, known for their live DJ sets. The group's profile grew with support slots on tours by
the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Stereolab, and Beck. "El Producto" is their debut EP.

N.O.H.A. – Noise Of Human Art.

international line-up. Their music is a tempting blend of Future Jazz, Dub, Trip Hop and Drum
n Bass.

better known by his stage name Mr. Scruff, is an English producer and DJ. The eponymous
"Mr. Scruff" is his debut album. It was released on the small Manchester-based label Robs

Electronic and World music.

electronic musician, composer and producer. He is noted for his unusual and virtuoso
methodology in sound design and music production. His second album "Bricolage" appearing
on Ninja Tune and offering a view a heavy blend of jazz melodies, Drum & Bass and Ambient
influences. The result is an accomplished midpoint between Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and
the moody soundscapes of Krush, Shadow, and others Trip Hop artists. In 2015, Fact magazine
ranked the album at 23 on its list of "The 50 Best Trip-Hop Albums of All Time".

DJ Cam – DJ-Kicks.

NOTE: also file under Hip Hop, Downtempo.

Coldcut & DJ Food vs DJ Krush – Cold Krush Cuts.

NOTE: also file under Cut-up/DJ, Hip Hop, Downtempo. The best Trip Hop owed plenty both to
the art of mixing and the cut-and-paste aesthetic of the 1980s, which is why a handful of
releases on this list are mix CDs rather than albums. "Cold Krush Cuts" is a perfect example of
how those two ideas influenced the music at its peak, and has the bonus of acting as a
handshake between the two London labels most associated with the tag. Krush was Mo’
Wax’s Japanese weapon, and Coldcut and DJ Food were Ninja’s own zen masters of audio
collage. The result is a still-classic double CD.

Various – Cup Of Tea Records : Another Compilation

NOTE: also file under Ambient, Drum n Bass, Downtempo. Featuring Fruit Loop, Monk &
Canatella, Reciever, Statik Sound System, Purple Penguin, Mr. Scruff and more.
Various – Trip Hop Boutique.

NOTE: Also file under Dub. Featuring Indoaminata, Electro Disciples, Dub Alchemist, Skylab,
Dust, Black MIghty Wax and more.

1998

Massive Attack - Mezzanine.

NOTE: One of the greatest Trip Hop masterpiece of the 90s. For the album, the band began to
explore a darker aesthetic, and focused on a atmospheric style. "Mezzanine" was
conceptualized by lead Massive Attack member Robert Del Naja in 1997, as he wanted to
depart from the "urban soul" and the jazzy and laidback sound of the first two albums, "Blue
Lines" and "Protection", and focus on the dark undercurrents which had previously only been
vaguely present in the group's music. The album's textured and deep tone relies heavily on
abstract and ambient sounds, heavy emphasis on bass, and influences from British Post-Punk,
Industrial and Dub. L voci sono di Elizabeth Fraser, Sara Jay and Horace Handy. "Mezzanine"
topped the charts in the UK, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand, becoming the group's most
commercially successful album to date.

Massive Attack - Singles 90/98.

NOTE: A limited edition 11 disc compilation by Massive Attack. It features all their vinyl and
CD singles collected until 1998 with B-sides and a host of remixes totalling 63 tracks. The box
set is packaged in a 5" X 5" box. The actual discs are housed in 11 cardboard sleeves with new
artwork of Robert -3D - Del Naja not found on the original singles. Absolute must.

Tricky - Angels With Dirty Faces.

Festival, Kristiansand 3rd July 1998.

UNKLE - Psyence Fiction.

NOTE: British musical group founded in 1992 by electronic musician and founder of the Mo
'Wax record label James Lavelle. Originally classified as Trip Hop, the group has employed a
variety of genres, styles, producers and guest artists throughout their careers. For the debut
album "Psyence Fiction", Lavelle enlisted as a co-writer and producer DJ Shadow (at the time
critically acclaimed after the release of his album "Endtroducing", see 1996) and called as a
vocal guest an all -star team composed by Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Mark Hollis (Talk Talk),
Mike D (Beastie Boys), Kool G Rap, Jason Newsted (Metallica), Badly Drawn Boy and Richard
Ashcroft (The Verve).
Baby Fox - Dum Dum Baby.

Hooverphonic - Blue Wonder Power Milk.

NOTE: Hooverphonic's first album with lead singer Geike Arnaert.

Esthero - Breath From Another.

NOTE: Esthero is a Canadian singer-songwriter who lives in Los Angeles, California. The name
Esthero refers both to the singer and formerly to the two-person team of herself and
producer Doc McKinney. The debut album "Breath from Another" is considered a Trip Hop
classic.

The Dining Rooms - Subterranean Modern Volume

Uno.

NOTE: The Dining Rooms are the longest-running Italian Trip Hop group founded by Cesare
Malfatti (former member of La Crus) and Stefano Ghittoni. "Subterranean Modern, Vol. 1" is
undoubtedly one of the most beautiful records of the genre ever produced in Italy. Presented
by the duo as "instrumental Hip Hop", it is an atmospheric, dark and full of loaded beats
album, strongly influenced by the "Mo' Wax school", which could very well come out of Dj
Krush's turntable. A beginning perhaps not original but still excellent for a band that in the
following years will be able to realize its style giving life to more than one gem of the Italian
Trip Hop.
Morcheeba - Big Calm.

NOTE: Morcheeba's second studio album. The cover is inspired by that of Ray Conniff's
compilation "Hi Fi Companion" (1966).

Waldeck - Balance Of The Force.

up at Spray Records, home to the work of Kruder & Dorfmeister and Count Basic.

Richards and Rich Beale.

NOTE: Spanish duo of singer Najwa Nimri and musician / producer Carlos Jean.
Mãozinha – Mãe d'Água.

NOTE: Swiss band founded in 1994 by singer/songwriter Liliana Ferreira, a Portuguese

descendant, who chose the Portuguese language to sing because she believes it is a "warmer"
and musical language than German.

The Psychonauts – Time Machine

NOTE: Psychonauts, are Pablo Clement (also a member of James Lavelle's Unkle project) and
Paul Mogg. "Time Machine" is a fine document of the era, not only rounding up some of Mo'
Wax’s Records finest moments, but also showing just how important turntablism and creative
mixing was to the Trip Hop scene’s development. Most songs don’t get more than a minute of
air time as the duo power through almost 50 tracks in half an hour, blending together cuts
from genre luminaries DJ Krush, Luke Vibert, DJ Shadow, La Funk Mob and more. In 2015, Fact
placed it at number 35 on the "50 Best Trip-Hop Albums of All Time" list.
Urban Species - Blanket.

NOTE: also file under Acid Jazz. Urban Species are a British Acid Jazz / Hip Hop band. Their
music draws from a wide range of influences (including Reggae, Blues, Funk, Dub, Jazz and
acoustic Folk) and combines acoustic instruments with samples and programming, resulting in
an organic sound that has sometimes been compared to a British version of Arrested
Development. The central figure and leader of the band is rapper Peter "Mintos" Akinrinlola,
but the band's line-up has at various times included other producers and MCs as well as many
of London's top Jazz-Funk musicians. "Blanket" is their second album, more Trip Hop oriented.
Mintos has invited various other artists from outside the core of Urban Species, such as
guitarist Terry Callier, veteran British rappers Blak Twang and MC Mell'O', singers Elizabeth
Troy, Jeffery Darnell, future house star MJ Cole and songwriter Imogen Heap.

Dj Shadow - Preemptive Strike.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Instrumental Hip Hop. The first compilation album by
American producer DJ Shadow. It contains DJ Shadow's singles released by Mo' Wax between
1993 and 1997. Ryan Schreiber of Pitchfork wrote, << These 11 tracks document Shadow's
evolution from just a kid with a turntable to a full-blown, steady-rockin' brother with soul >>.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called it << a nice summation of DJ Shadow's most
important singles through the end of 1997 >>.

Kruder & Dorfmeister - K&D Sessions.

NOTE: also file under Dub, Downtempo. The second DJ mix compilation album by the Vienna-
based duo Kruder & Dorfmeister is a selection of remixes produced in the previous five years
by the duo, plus two original productions. "The K&D Sessions" received acclaim on its release.
AllMusic gave the album five stars out of five, opining that << the impossibly deep beats on
almost every track simply couldn't have been recorded by any other act >> and referring to
the music as << the most blissfully blunted music the world has ever heard >>. Pitchfork also
praising the album stating << Out of the depths of their remix material's musical void, Kruder
and Dorfmeister assemble organic downtempo triumphs which may alone be sufficient to
perpetuate the otherwise trite brand of music currently labeled "Trip Hop" >>.

Dj Krush - Kakusei.

NOTE: also file under Instrumental Hip Hop, Abstract, Downtempo.

Air - Moon Safari.

NOTE: also file under Synth-Pop, Downtempo. Debut studio album by French electronic music
duo Air. "Moon Safari", acclaimed by critics, it is credited with setting the stage for the
budding Downtempo music style. It is included in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear
Before You Die".

Groove Armada - Northern Star.

NOTE: also file under Deep House, Downtempo. Electronic music duo from London, England,
composed of Andy Cato and Tom Findlay. "Northern Star" is their debut album. NME called it
<< an oddly schizoid mix of trendy beats and old-skool snoozerama >>.
Sub Sub – Delta Tapes.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Breakbeat, Downtempo. Sub Sub was an English dance
group from Handforth, Cheshire, consisting of Jimi Goodwin and twin brothers Andy and Jez
Williams. "Delta Tapes" is a collection of b-sides and unreleased songs destined to be featured
on the band's second album, never released. Track 6 "Smoking Beagles" featuring Tricky.

Moloko - I Am Not The Doctor.

NOTE: also file under Drum n Bass, House, Downtempo.

Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children.

NOTE: also file under IDM, Ambient, Abstract, Downtempo. Boards of Canada are a Scottish
electronic music duo consisting of brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin. "Music Has
the Right to Children" is their fifth studio album and continued their distinctive style of
Electronica, featuring vintage synthesisers, samples from outdated media, analogue
equipment, and Hip Hop-inspired beats. The album received critical acclaim upon its release,
and has since been acknowledged as a landmark work in electronic music, going on to inspire
a variety of subsequent artists.

Leila - Like Weather.

NOTE: also file under Illbient, IDM. Leila Arab is an Iranian-born producer and DJ based in
London, England. She has worked extensively with Icelandic singer Björk. "Like Weather" is
her debut studio album. John Bush of AllMusic noted the album's << tremendously eclectic >>
tone, which he said << is of an experimentalism far in advance of other electronic
singer/songwriter acts out there >>. In 2015, it was placed at number six on Fact's list of the
"best Trip Hop albums of all time", with the magazine calling it << one of the most disarming
records of the era, and manages to fulfil the promise of Trip Hop without succumbing to its
trappings >>.
Faithless - Sunday 8PM.

NOTE: also file under Progressive House, Downtempo. Their first Faithless album, 1996's
"Reverence", was an underground hit but didn't quite break the mainstream. "Sunday 8AM"
changed all that, with the hit singles "Bring My Family Back" (one of the most moving Trip
Hop tracks ever) and "God Is a DJ", it became a great Club anthem.

Lagash Featuring Sean Martin And Silvio D'Amico –

Music By The Devil.

NOTE. also file under Acid Jazz. First and only solo album by Italian musician and producer
Luca 'Lagash' Saporiti, best known for being the bassist of the Italian Alternative Rock band
Marlene Kuntz and a regular collaborator of La Crus (see 1997). "Music By The Devil", made
with South African rapper / singer Sean Martin (The Dining Rooms) and guitarist Silvio
D'Amico, is built on a solid Jazz timbre contaminated by mellifluous Dub and Trip Hop sounds.
Sean's warm and deep voice often leaves room for instrumental digressions on the "Acid Jazz"
theme that lead the listener into a nocturnal and urban atmosphere. Unfortunately an
underestimated and little known record that deserves a new vinyl edition.
Almamegretta - Lingo.

NOTE: also file under Dub, Drum n Bass, Downtempo. Tthe album of the definitive artistic
consecration of the Neapolitan band. The group seeks (and finds) the perfect synthesis
between Kingston, Naples and Bristol, between the Mediterranean sounds and the
contemporary trends of European electronic music. And, among others, they call Bill Laswell
and the musicians of the Transglobal Underground to sanction this hybridization. Using the
Neapolitan dialect mixed with English, the Alma are finally able to speak to everyone.

Delta V - Spazio.

NOTE: also file under Europop, Downtempo. Delta V is an Italian group, born in 1995 by Carlo
Bertotti and Flavio Ferri. Their debut album "Spazio" sees Francesca Touré as a guest singer

Vernetti (Casino Royale, Raiz, Üstmamò).

Santoni and Maurizio Corda and by the singer Laura Mura.

and Daniel Goddard. Goddard was also a video editor working for such acts as The Charlatans,
Leftfield and Primal Scream.

The Aloof - Seeking Pleasure.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Downtempo.

Solex - Solex Vs. The Hitmeister.

NOTE: also file under Leftfield, Indie Pop, Sound Collage, Downtempo. Liesbeth Esselink,
known by her stage name Solex, is a Dutch musician based in Amsterdam. Her music is a light-
hearted amalgamation of Indie Pop, Electronica and sampling. "Solex vs. the Hitmeister" is
her debut album. Heather Phares of AllMusic wrote << A completely unique combination of
beats, samples, and voice, Solex is insular and inventive, revealing an artist with a very
personal kind of creativity >>. In 2015, Fact mag placed the disc at number 28 on its list of the
"best Trip Hop albums of all time", writing: << Esselink’s debut album was hard to categorize
when it landed in 1998, there were elements pilfered from plenty of genres but not really
enough of one or the other for categorization (...) It was certainly aimed at a different crowd
from the usual green-thumbed beatheads with a complete collection of Mo’ Wax 12''s (...).
Was a breath of fresh air, and Solex vs. Hitmeister‘s peculiar charms still resonate as she
tangles her voice through hiccuping collages of unwieldy samples and collapsing drum
machine loops >>.

The Gift – Vinyl.

NOTE: also file under Ambient, Downtempo. Band originally from Alcobaça, Portugal, that
recently celebrated 25 years of activity. Their debit album "Vinyl" Released after the EP
"Digital Atmosphere" (1997) in only 2000 self-produced copies it was subsequently reprinted
and distributed by Sony, selling more than 35,000 copies, an enormous amount for the small
portuguese market. The album has an international flair, by virtue of the fact that it is sung
entirely in English, but also and above all for its highly original sound - obtained with a refined
and skilful blend of samples, electronic and acoustic instruments; the surprising thing is that
the record does not stop "playing Portuguese" and maintains its own originality and
personality, incredibly free from all the clichés of the genre.

Dust - Room Music.

NOTE: also file under Breakbeat, Drum n Bass, Downtempo. Electronic music duo composed

work, "Ray of Light" is an Electronica record which incorporates multiple genres, including

by Geoff Barrow (Portishead). Tricky also contributed vocals on three tracks.
Product Of The Environment - Product Of The
Environment.

NOTE: Gareth Bowen, West Midlands music director and keyboardist, directing this film with
Tricky executive producing. Bowden, related to studio owner and underworld character Jack
Adams, was able to get chilling interviews with some of the most prominent South London
criminals of the 1950s and 1960s and use them as "lyrics" for his dark soundscapes. The
individual songs bear the names of the characters who tell their stories. Ex inmates, including
some professional killers, who tell you << Crime does not pay >> with disturbing music in the
background that produces an intense and appropriate counterpoint. An instant classic: a kind
of Gangsta-rap style Trip Hop.

Terranova - Close The Door.

NOTE: After their DJ-Kicks's mix album, in 1999 Terranova released their debut album,
featured guest vocals of Cath Coffey (from Stereo MCs) on tracks "Turn Around", "Midnight
Melodic (Chase the Blues)" and "Sweet Bitter Love". From the same label Rasco featured on
tracks "X-Files" and "Midnight Melodic". Bristol artist Tricky appeared on "Bombing
Bastards". And Nicolette Krebitz (a German director, actress, model, and singer) sang on
"Never," "Plastic Stress," and "Just Enough". No doubt: "Close the Door" is a Trip Hop album
that manages to perfectly encapsulate the essence of what "Bristol Sound" is.

Sneaker Pimps - Splinter.

NOTE: The second studio album by English electronic band Sneaker Pimps, the first album to
feature founding member and principal songwriter Chris Corner on lead vocals, replacing the
band's previous singer Kelli Ali. NME described "Splinter" as << a staunch refusal to cash in
whatsoever on previous fame >> and << the band's hangover after the long night of success
brought by debut "Becoming X" >>. AllMusic described the album's musical style as << full of
trancey, edgy Psychedelia, interspersed with moments of blistering rock >> and << an intricate
album of Trip Hop >>.

NOTE: Second studio album by Archive, the only one that features Suzanne Wooder as singer
of the band.
Emiliana Torrini - Love In The Time Of Science.

NOTE: Icelandic singer and songwriter. "Love in the Time of Science" is her third album, the
first to be released internationally (her earlier albums being released only in her native
Iceland). The disc was produced by Roland Orzabal and Alan Griffiths of Tears For Fears, who
also wrote two tracks for the album.

Major Force West - 93-97.

NOTE: One of the most beautiful Trip Hop records ever, although it is not well known outside
the environment of the most "experts", probably due to the fact that it is the only organic
work released under this name and that, more than an album, it is a compilation of songs
made over the course of almost 5 years. Just listen to "93-97" to see how much this group has
influenced many of the most famous artists over the years, from the point of view of concepts
and solutions that someone could swear are original for certain bands, but which here reveal
a past much deeper and unexpected. Psychedelic music, Lounge atmospheres, Dub echoes,
slow beats and bewitching loops, smoky and drugged soundscapes, scratches, guitars, sitar,
trumpets, are all here, under the form of a clear and unequivocal manifesto. To be clear, the
one to which the word "Trip" refers when talking about Bristol Sound, and which manifests
itself in the most varied forms in the bands that we learned to appreciate during the 90s.
Certainly one of the most comprehensive testimony of the power of the ideas behind Trip
Hop.

2001
Blue Foundation - Blue Foundation.

NOTE: Blue Foundation is a Danish band. Their film compositions inspired by Dream Pop,
Shoegaze and Trip Hop are known to have appeared in several films and TV series. Their self-
titled debut album is probably one of the most underrated Trip Hop records of the 2000s,
perhaps because it still sounds very "90s". "Blue Foundation" is clearly inspired by Bristol, and
mines the dark, poignant and dreamy vein of jazzy Trip-Hop.

Lovage - Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By.

NOTE: Lovage was a collaborative project headed by the american producer Dan the
Automator (Handsome Boy Modeling School, Deltron 3030, Gorillaz) under his pseudonym
"Nathaniel Merriweather". "Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By", Their only album, was
created in team with Mike Patton (best known as the lead vocalist of the alternative metal
band Faith No More) and Jennifer Charles (singer and songwriter, co-founded the New York
band Elysian Fields), who both provide vocals. Kid Koala plays turntables and samples and
toured with the band for their 13-city U.S. tour. The album's artwork is a homage to the cover
of Serge Gainsbourg's "N°2" (1959).
Bows - Cassidy.

The Dining Rooms - Numero Deux.

NOTE: The thirteen tracks on this record show off the duo's predilection for jazzy songs with
melancholy and crepuscular outlines, fused with Trip Hop beats; The result is a decidedly
cinematic sonic plot, where arrangements close to groups such as Lamb, (some) Massive
Attack, the Moby of "Porcelain" are combined with the Easy Listening soundtracks of the 70s.
Télépopmusik - Genetic World.

NOTE: Télépopmusik is a French electronic music trio, composed of Fabrice Dumont, Stephan
Haeri and Christophe Hetier. "Genetic World" is their debut studio album. The Scottish singer-

classical string arrangements, into a relaxing, potent wave of sounds >>. Matt Diehl of Rolling
Stone gave the album 3.5 stars out of 5, saying, << More like jazz on acid than Acid Jazz,
"Simple Things" can be hallucinatory yet eminently listenable; it's chill-out music with a little
something for your mind as well >>.

Björk - Vespertine.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, IDM, Ambient, Minimal, Ethereal, Downtempo. Björk's fourth
studio album. Production on the record began while filming "Dancer in the Dark". With
"Vespertine", Björk aspired to create an album with an intimate and domestic atmosphere,

rising popularity of Napster and music downloads, Björk also composed arrangements with
thin, "icy" sounding instruments whose quality would not be compromised when
downloaded and played on a computer, including the harp, the celesta, clavichord, strings and
custom music boxes. Assisted by the producers duo Matmos, Björk created "microbeats" from
various commonplace sounds, such as that of shuffling cards and ice being cracked.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Electro. Third studio album by Sneaker Pimps.
Described as Trip Hop, the album had the label "goth" affixed to it by more than one reviewer.
Despite a positive fan reception, it received a mediocre response from music critics at the
time of its release, and was commercially unsuccessful, failing to chart in the band's home
country of the UK. It would also be the last album recorded before their 20 years until 2021's
release of "Squaring The Circle".

formed by musician Damon Albarn (frontman of the Rock band Blur) and comic artist Jamie
Hewlett /tank Girl), from London, England. The band primarily consists of four fictional
members: 2-D (vocals, keyboards), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar), Noodle (guitar, keyboards,
vocals), and Russel Hobbs (drums). Their universe is presented in music videos, interviews,
comic strips and short cartoons. Gorillaz' music often features collaborations with a wide
range of featured artists, with Albarn as the only permanent musical contributor. With
Gorillaz, Albarn departed from the distinct Britpop of his band Blur, exploring a variety of
electronic musical styles including Trip Hop, Dance, and Dub. The debut album "Gorillaz"
went triple platinum in the UK and double platinum in Europe, with sales driven by the
success of the album's lead single "Clint Eastwood". Albarn originally began work on the
album by himself, however eventually invited American producer Dan "the Automator"
Nakamura (Lovage, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Deltron 3030) to serve as producer on
the album. Nakamura and Albarn had recently collaborated on Deltron 3030, the debut album
by the Hip Hop supergroup of the same name featuring rapper Del the Funky Homosapien
and DJ Kid Koala, both of whom Nakamura recruited to assist in finishing Gorillaz material.
Del featured on two tracks on the album, including the lead single "Clint Eastwood", while Kid
Koala contributed turntables to various tracks. The album featured additional collaborations

Chronicle describes the disc as << an across-the-board mix of bleepy synths, crunch beats and
ambient, dreamy vocals, with even a bit disco mixed in at times >>. According to John Bush of
AllMusic, << Röyksopp balances the haunted atmospheres of Boards of Canada with the more
traditional "songwriting" sensibility of downbeat specialists like Groove Armada or Koop >>.

Quantic – The 5th Exotic.

NOTE: also file under Downtempo. William Holland aliss Quantic is an English musician, DJ
and producer. Holland plays guitars, bass, double bass, piano, organ, saxophone, accordion

Prefuse 73 – Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives.

NOTE: also file under Glitch Hop, Breaks, IDM, Downtempo, Experimental. << Like Dj Shadow
when he knew what he was doing >> (NME); << A furiously modernist take on Hip Hop >>
(The Wire); << Genuinely seems like a next step for a genre in perpetual need of reinvention
>>(Uncut magazine). These are some of the words used by music critics to describe the debut
album by American producer Scott Herren, a.k.a. Prefuse 73. Indeed "Vocal Studies + Uprock
Narratives" is difficult to describe. Certain journalists obsessed with were quick to describe
the album's music as "Glitch Hop". Herren has only described his style as Hip Hop, saying that
he doesn't listen to electronic music and that << some people have a hard time accepting
what I do >>.

Portishead and bassist Paul Webb (under the pseudonym Rustin Man, formerly of Talk Talk),
that also features contributions from Gibbons' fellow Portishead bandmate Adrian Utley and
Webb's former bandmate Lee Harris. "Out of Season" is largely a Folk album with Jazz and
Downtempo leanings, with Gibbons and Webb drawing more directly on the influences of
Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and Nick Drake, at which Portishead's work in Trip Hop hinted. A
work carried out mainly with live instruments where electronics are used in a discreet and
minimal way, almost obtaining the result of an "acoustic Trip Hop" sound.

Slowpho - Hi-Fi Sounds For Young Norwegians.

NOTE: also file under Breaks, Drum n Bass. Electronic duo from Kristiansand, Norwey, formed
by Christian Watkins (producer) & Hilde Drange (vocalist). The band is majorly inspired by the

The result can be enjoyed on their debut album "Hi-Fi Sounds For Young Norwegians".

Everything But The Girl – Like The Deserts Miss The
Rain.

NOTE: also file under Deep House, Downtempo. A partially mixed compilation album of
Everything but the Girl. The album's title is taken from the lyrics of their famous song
"Missing", taken from 1994's "Amplified Heart". The record effectively juggles between the
duo's largely acoustic early recordings and more electronic subsequent work and is the
perfect place for fans of both periods to investigate their entire career. Since their musical
aesthetic rarely deviated from elegant and melancholy pop, the record flows smoothly, from
their 1996 Drum n Bass version of the Brazilian standard "Corcovado" (from Red Hot + Rio) to
the 1984 acoustic bossa "Each and Every One ", passing through the extraordinary Todd
Terry's Remix of" Missing ". Another nice touch was including Tracey Thorn's best outside
apparition - on Massive Attack's "Protection".

Various - Bertallosophie.

NOTE: Trip Hop / Drum n Bass 2xCD compilation, compiled by italian rapper, musician, DJ and
radio host Alessio Bertallot. Featuring Zero7, Groove Armada, Faithless, Silent Poets, Snooze,
The Dining Rooms, and more.

Massive Attack - 100th window.

NOTE: fourth studio album by Massive Attack. Of the group's original lineup, the album
contains only Robert '3D' Del Naja; Andrew Vowles left shortly after the release of the group's
previous album "Mezzanine" (1998) and Grant Marshall refused to participate in the making
of the record. Del Naja is entirely responsible for "100th Window", the group's first album
that does not use samples, and which plays entirely according to his pessimistic view of
contemporary life: gloomy, dark and, above all, melancholy. However, the record became yet
another splendid Massive album, obviously thanks to the contributions of Sinead O'Connor
and Horace Andy on vocals.
Martina Topley-Bird - Quixotic.

NOTE: Debut album by English singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Martina Topley-
Bird, who first gained fame as the featured female vocalist on Tricky's debut album,
"Maxinquaye" (1995). She also worked with him on his subsequent albums "Nearly God" and
"Pre-Millennium Tension" (both 1996). "Quixotic" was co-written and produced by Topley-
Bird and received positive reviews from music critics upon its release and was shortlisted for
the 2003 Mercury Music Prize. The album also includes a collaboration with Tricky: his vocals
are featured on "Ragga". He also did some producing and additional programming on a few
more tracks.

Muggs - Dust.

NOTE: the solo debut of Dj Muggs, historical producer of Cypress Hill, is a Trip Hop album wich
is a real tribute to the sound of Bristol. The disc features contributes on vocals by Josh Todd,
Greg Dulli, Amy Trujillo and Everlast and is arguably one of the best US products of this genre.
In 1999, Muggs had previously collaborated with Tricky on the album "Juxtapose", but in this
disc he definitively proves his "understanding" of Trip Hop, with 14 tracks with a heavy beats
and turbid melancholy atmospheres.
Lamb – Between Darkness And Wonder.

Ilya - They Died For Beauty.

NOTE: A Trip Hop duo from Bristol, England. The band consists of Joanna Swan and Nick
Pullin. Dan Brown was the third member of Ilya during the making of the debut album "They
Died for Beauty", wich receiving a massive critical acclaim. The influences of the disc hail from
all over Europe and beyond, representing many different musical eras along the way, from 70s
soundtracks and 50s torch songs to 40s 'chanson' and, of course, 90s melting-pot Trip Hop.
Cinematic strings, languorous, continental moods, simultaneous nods to Portishead and Edith
Piaf and frequent diversions into romantic melodrama: all the tracks are pretty and poignant
and flow with an uncommon grace and elegance.
Karmacoda - Evidence.

The Dining Rooms - Tre.

NOTE: Featuring Anna Clementi and Sean Martin on vocals.

Orange Blossom - Everything Must Change.

Meg – Meg.

NOTE: Songwriter and producer from Naples, Italy, known for being the female voice of the
electronic music collective 99 Posse. The eponymous "Meg", her first solo album, is a Trip Hop
/ Downtempo record that clearly looks at Björk's music, thus losing its originality. However
the quality of the arrangements and beats (made for her by veteran producers Carlo Ubaldo
Rossi and Marco Messina) and above all her powerful voice give life to an enjoyable record.
Björk – Medúlla.

NOTE: also file under Experimental. Fifth studio album by Björk. After the release of her
electronic-influenced previous album "Vespertine" (2001), Björk intended to make an album
almost entirely a cappella constructed with human vocals, in opposition to the previous
album's intense process of composition and multiple layers of instrumentation. For this
reason the album's title derives from the Latin word for "marrow". Almost entirely a cappella,
the disc also demonstrating Avantgarde and Experimental music. Combines beatboxing,
classical choirs that suggest composers like Penderecki or Arvo Pärt, and mews, moans,
counterpoint and guttural grunts provided by herself and guests like Mike Patton, Robert
Wyatt and Tanya Tagaq. "Medúlla" includes "vocal fantasias" that lean toward Chamber
Music, alongside tracks that "are obviously but distantly connected to Hip Hop.

Gianni Maroccolo – A.C.A.U. - La Nostra Meraviglia.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Downtempo. Maroccolo is an Italian musician and
producer. In his forty-year career, mainly in the role of bass player, he has played and
collaborated with various artists on the Italian and international scene. He was a member of
the rock bands Litfiba and C.S.I. Starting from 2001 a new path begins in Alternative Rock and
Electronics with PGR. Acquiring more and more practice on the use of hard disk recording,
Maroccolo spends entire nights solving new bass lines and treating them with effects and
samplers until he creates different bases and grooves. The result is convincing and Maroccolo
sends these harmonic lines to his old friends and travel companions who immediately agree
to interpret them, writing the lyrics and singing them. Thus was born his first solo album
"A.C.A.U.", where on dreamy Downtempo beats, finely constructed, we find, among others,
artists such as Piero Pelù, Carmen Consoli, Ginevra Di Marco, Raiz, Franco Battiato and
Lorenzo -Jovanotti- Cherubini.

brass mice, dancing and ornaments. It mixes the electronic music for which Moloko was
known with Jazz and Synth-Pop styles.

a.k.a Madaam Majestic and her husband Carlos "C-12" Bess, Hip Hop producer and sound
engineer from New York. The duo have worked on numerous Wu-Tang Clan related projects.
"For Majic Eyes Only" is their first and only album. A "sung" Hip Hop record (I use this term on
purpose, because it is deliberately far from R'n'B) with strong Jazz and Funk influences.
Experimenting with rough yet atmospheric beats and a powerful Soul voice, the duo gives life
- here I don't know how much voluntarily - to a NY Trip Hop opera.

NOTE: also file under Abstract, Dubstep, UK Garage, Ambient. British William Emmanuel
Bevan, known by his recording alias Burial, is one of the most influential electronic musicians
of the early 21st century. His music contains elements of future Garage, Dubstep, Jungle and
Ambient music. His eponymous debut album "Burial" is considered a landmark of the mid-
2000s Dubstep scene, thanks to a sound features a dark, emotive take on the UK rave music.
Critics have variously interpreted the release as an elegy for the dissipated rave movement
and a sullen audio portrait of London. In 2013 it was ranked number 391 on NME's "500
Greatest Albums of All Time".

Saltillo – Ganglion.

NOTE: also file under Modern Classical, Breakbeat, Downtempo. Menton J. Matthews III, alias

well as a slew of electronics. He has spent few years refining his song-writing abilities by
scoring film soundtracks and doing production work at the mixing desk. "Ganglion" is his
debut album.

Zhong Chi - Easy World.

NOTE: Zhong Chi is a Shanghainese girl who grew up in Denmark under the influence of
northern European music. She started to explore Trip Hop when she turned 18 and met
famous Shanghai electro musician, Jiayang Yixi in 2005. They spent 2 years creating music
together. The result of this collaboration is her debut album entitled "Easy World", 10 tracks
of pure Trip Hop, between heavily loaded beats and rainy dreamy and melancholic
atmospheres. Probably one of the most beautiful but also least known works of the genre.

Caplette and Stephane Sotto.

Hooverphonic - The President Of LSD Golf Club.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Ambient, Downtempo. Sixth studio album by
Hooverphonic. The title was originally intended for "The Magnificent Tree", but was not
allowed by Sony, Hooverphonic's label at the time. The album has quite a different feel from
previous Hooverphonic albums. It was recorded with live musicians and made use of the
mellotron, an electronic keyboard popularised by The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever".
The sound of the album harks back to the psychedelic era of music but retains a sense of
modernity. Songs such as "Expedition Impossible" also have more of a traditional rock sound,
compared to the sound of earlier Hooverphonic work.

2008
Portishead - Third.

NOTE: also file under Leftfield, Alternative Rock, Experimental. Third studio album by
Portishead, their first in eleven years. "Third" moved away from the Trip Hop style they had
popularised, incorporating influences such as Krautrock, Shoegaze, Folk Rock, and the film
soundtracks of John Carpenter. After Portishead released their self-titled second album in
1997, band member Geoff Barrow put Portishead on hiatus and went to Australia. He became
uninterested in music, and efforts to develop new songs with guitarist and keyboardist Adrian
Utley failed. They were inspired to create again after producing with the band the Coral, and
restarted work with singer Beth Gibbons in Bristol. Wanting to move away from the Trip Hop
sound, the band avoided using instruments they had used before (like turntable scratching, a
hallmark of their earlier albums), and used several analogue synthesisers and a clavioline, an
electronic keyboard that predates the synthesiser, and even a toy acoustic guitar Utley found
in a junk shop. Gareth Grundy of Q wrote that << Third's sole link with the past is Gibbons'
voice ... Everything else has been binned, the Hip Hop, the cinematic feel, the lot >>. The AV
Club wrote that Gibbons << sounds more hollowed-out and harrowed than ever, a human
nervous twitch on too much coffee and too little sleep >>. A record that, despite being light
years away from the Portisheads we were used to, still plays incredibly like Portishead. In
2013, NME ranked "Third" number 330 in its list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
Tricky - Knowle West Boy.

NOTE: also file under Alternative Rock, Downtempo. Seventh studio album by Tricky. Knowle
West is the neighbourhood of Bristol when the artist was born. The first single, "Council
Estate", samples "Roads" by Portishead from the 1994 album Dummy. It was the first single
that Tricky had ever done with just himself on vocals. "Veronika" is a cover of the song "Livido
Amniotico" by italian Electronic / Rock band Subsonica (ft. Veronika Coassolo), which was first
published as one of three previously unreleased studio tracks in their 2003 live album
"Controllo del livello di rombo".

Son Lux - At War With Walls And Mazes.

Inventions and Mazzy Star, Guy Garvey of Elbow and Martina Topley-Bird. Further

tracks) and bass ("Girl I Love You") by Neil Davidge, bass by Billy Fuller of Beak (various tracks)
and drumming from both the late Jerry Fuchs and regular Massive Attack session and touring
drummer Damon Reece. Unlike previous records, there are no personal acknowledgements
on the inlay. Most tracks were co-produced by Neil Davidge and Robert Del Naja; Grant
Marshall only contributed production to "Splitting The Atom", "Paradise Circus" and
"Saturday Come Slow", but co-wrote every track.

Morcheeba - Blood Like Lemonade.

NOTE: Seventh studio album by Morcheeba. The album marks the return of former lead
singer Skye Edwards, who left the band in 2003. Paul Godfrey said, << This is the record we

to travel treacherous terrains to get back to our natural habitat >>.

Ghostpoet – Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam.

NOTE: also file under Leftfield, Hip Hop. Obaro Ejimiwe a.k.a. Ghostpoet is a British singer,
songwriter and musician. Since the beginning of his career, the artist has avoided identifying
his music as belonging to a particular genre, but many started listing as Hip Hop or Trip Hop.
In recent times Ghostpoet has grown more comfortable with his increasing connection to the
Alternative Rock and Electronica genres. "Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam", his first
album, received generally good reviews from music critics. Zachary Houle of Pop Matters
praised the sound for being << compelling in its own audacity >>. Adam Kennedy of the BBC
stated that << rarely does a British debut album forge such a fully formed, genuinely unique
direction >>. Some reviews were more mixed, however; American magazine CMJ noted the
challenging nature of the music, saying that the songs << barely step out of the realm of
down-tempo Trip Hop genre pioneered by his countrymen Massive Attack >> but added that,
<< Ghostpoet shows that he is close to mastering it >>.

Gal – Recanto.

NOTE: also file under MPB, Minimal, Experimental. Gal is obviously Gal Costa, a famous
Brazilian singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist, living icon of Bossa Nova and Samba.
But the platitudes end here. Because "Recanto" (tr. nook) is amazing from start to finish, a
different album from everything the artist had recorded until then. All the music was written
by Caeteno Veloso and passed to the meat grinder by his son Moreno, who for this album has
made a solid electronic frame. A minimal, hermetic, often dark sound that draws fully on the
European Trip Hop universe by transferring it to Bahia. A post-modern extension of
Tropicalism? It is what according to what Gal admitted, it was hoped to get here. Melancholy
turns into saudade, but isn't it the same thing after all?

Neneh Cherry - Blank Project.

NOTE: Fourth studio album by Neneh Cherry, the first in 18 years. The artist wrote the
material as a way to mourn for her mother, who died in 2009. The record is a departure from
her previous work, consisting of a more sparse sound, with loose drums and a few
synthesizers as the only accompaniment to her voice. NPR calls the work << stark and urgent,
almost entirely percussive >>. Spin says it is << a stark, bracing, and emotionally vulnerable
album that straddles the Jazz, Pop, and Electronic worlds rather brilliantly >>.

Tricky - Adrian Thaws.

NOTE: Tenth studio album by Tricky. On the album's title, which is artist's birth name, Tricky
stated: << Calling it "Adrian Thaws" is saying "You don’t really know me". So many times,
people have tried to put a finger on me and every album I go to a different place >>. On the
album's sound, Tricky also stated: << I suppose this is my Club/Hip Hop album. I’ve only heard
my music a few times in a club but I grew up in clubs from when I was 14: blues parties, Hip
Hpp clubs, a few raves. I’m not known for doing club music but this album has some club
tracks on it – well, what I would consider club music >>. Michelle Geslani of Consequence of
Sound reported that the album features elements from Hip Hop, House, Jazz, Blues, and
Reggae, while describing the track "Nicotine Love" as << a slinky, body-moving number that
seems well-suited for U.K. club-hopping >>.

Massive Attack - Ritual Spirit.

NOTE: An EP by Massive Attack. The line-up of the band features Tricky for the first time since
the release of "Protection" in 1994, and also features Scottish Hip Hop group Young Fathers,
London rapper Roots Manuva and singer Azekel. It is also one of only two releases by the
band (along with the Danny the Dog soundtrack) that features no vocals performed by Horace
Andy, and the first Massive Attack work since "Protection" not to be produced by Neil
Davidge. "Ritual Spirit" received widespread critical acclaim from contemporary music critics.
John Garratt of PopMatters praised the EP, stating, << Pretty much everything that helped the
band make a name for itself is on display for these four songs—the simmering tension of title
track, the sample-happy soundtrack for urban decay on the opener 'Dead Editors', the hot
and steady boil of 'Voodoo in My Blood', and the morose single 'Take It There' featuring the
return of Tricky >>.

Skye | Ross - Skye | Ross.

NOTE: In 2014, Paul Godfrey left Morcheeba. Ross Godfrey later explained that: << Paul and I
had not been getting on musically, or personally for a long time, and after the "Head Up High"
album in 2013, Paul told us he was leaving the band, and he wanted Skye and I to buy him out
of his share of the name. We disagreed on how much it was worth so no deal was struck. Skye
and I thought it best to just release the record we had made under our own names. There will
be no more Morcheeba albums >>.

Martina Topley-Bird - Forever I Wait.

Morcheeba - Blackest Blue.

Sneaker Pimps - Squaring The Circle.

NOTE: also file under Leftfield, Indie Pop. After a hiatus of 18 years, it is the fourth album in
the Sneaker Pimps discography. It includes songs that had been sitting incomplete for
decades, and collaborations with singer Simonne Jones. This returned the group to a trio of
founders Liam Howe and Chris Corner alongside a female vocalist, reflecting their most
commercially successful period in the mid-1990s when they worked with Kelli Ali. The title
comes from squaring the circle, a seemingly impossible process, which describes the
relationship between Howe and Corner and the unlikeliness of them reforming.
Alpha - Failure.

NOTE: also file under Downtempo. Tenth studio album by English Alternative Dance band
Saint Etienne. The album marks the band's first sample-based record since "So Tough" (1993)
and is set between the "optimistic" years of 1997 and 2001, and contains samples of Pop
songs from this time along with related field recordings. Tim Sendra of AllMusic called it << a
concept album that looks to extract the optimistic sound of late '90s mainstream Pop and
twist it into a suite of songs that feel like the half-remembered afterimages of a dream >>.
Reviewing the album for Pitchfork, Jesse Dorris wrote that the album seems << lost in
nostalgia for an age it hasn't fully reckoned with >>.
