 Answer the questions in the space provided on the question sheets. If you run out of
space for an answer, continue at the back of the page and clearly indicate that you have
continued the problem elsewhere.
 Show all your work or reasoning. Answers without work or reasoning shown will receive
no mark.
 You may use calculators. Round your answers off to two decimal places where necessary.
 This examination paper consists of 13 pages and 10 questions. Make sure that no pages
or questions are missing. Put your student number (or at least your initials) on each
page, just in case a page comes loose.

If you would like to access your examination script(s) please see the notice board in the

1. (8 marks) A recent university graduate buys a new car by borrowing R180 000 from a bank
at 9,6% annual interest, compounded monthly, for 5 years.
1.1. What should her instalments be if she wishes to repay the bank equal amounts at the end
of each month? (2)

1.2. She decides to pay R4 500 every month in order to repay the loan in a shorter period
of time. How many equal payments of R4 500 will she make? (Do not include the final
smaller payment.) (3)

2. (3 marks) An amount of R3 000 is invested in an account which pays 7,7% annual interest,
compounded continuously. How many whole months will it take the amount to
exceed R5 000 for the first time?

4. (9 marks A developer wants to build a complex comprising luxury shops each of the
same size, from which he will derive revenue by renting them out. The construction
costs are approximately millions of rand and the expected revenue is
( )
R15 million per shop. The rate of return of building shops is given by ( ) ( )
where ( ) is the construction cost and ( ) is the revenue.

4.1. Write down the formulae for ( ) and ( ). (2)

4.2. How many shops does the developer need to build in the same complex for maximum
rate of return? Show how you know that ( ) is a maximum, and not a minimum for
that value of . (Do not use the second derivative.) (6)

4.3. What is the maximum rate of return? (1)

Answer the following questions by using the diagram above:

5.1. For which value(s) of , will the graph of ( ) have critical points if any? (2)

5.2. Classify the critical points as points of local minimum, local maximum or
singular points. (3)

5.3. State the interval(s) where ( ) is increasing. (1)
