1.0 Introduction

Javanese manuscripts are invaluable historical and cultural artifacts, providing

insights into the rich heritage of Java and its linguistic traditions. However, these manuscripts
often pose a significant transliteration challenge due to the scriptio continua, a writing style
where words are not separated by spaces or clear boundaries. The scriptio continua problem
arises because there is no symbol for space between words in a sentence, which makes it
difficult to read and understand the text. The proposed method is based on the backtracking
algorithm and uses a depth-first search to seek relevant candidate words to determine whether
to merge a new syllable or not. The paper begins with a review of related work in word
segmentation, followed by a description of the core ideas of the proposed algorithm. The data
used to evaluate the proposed method is detailed, and the results of experiments and
discussion are presented. The paper concludes with potential applications of this method in
improving the reading and understanding of Javanese manuscripts stored in museums and
libraries. In response to this challenge, a method has been proposed that relies on a
backtracking algorithm and utilizes a depth-first search to determine relevant candidate words
for the potential merging of new syllables. This critical review aims to assess the proposed
method's strengths and weaknesses.

2.0 Objectives

The proposed method for solving scriptio continua in Javanese manuscript

transliteration utilizes a backtracking algorithm with a depth-first search to address the issue
of scriptio continua. In this method, the goal is to identify candidate words that may need to
be merged to form a new syllable in the Javanese manuscript. The aim of the paper is to
develop a fast and efficient algorithm for segmenting contiguous syllables into words. The
proposed method is valuable for improving the reading of Javanese manuscripts stored in
museums and libraries in Indonesia. It highlights the importance of accurate transliteration for
preserving cultural heritage and historical knowledge. The paper also aims to evaluate the
proposed method and compare it with other methods used in word segmentation.

3.0 Discussions

Many researchers in various countries have been working on the post-processing step
in the automatic transliteration of manuscripts. This research paper steered by Widiarti and
Pulungan that giving a much effort to strive an exploring method for forming words out of
syllables produced by the transliteration process of Javanese-language manuscripts as a
solution to the scriptio-continuo problem. This research is important when syllable grouping
deadlocks develop as a result of Javanese script transliteration. When the quality of the source
document to be recognized is low, issues in recognizing the script pictures in the document
may develop.
Jurgens and Steven discovered that, as compared to the lexical based upon features
technique, word sense induction-based clustering is extremely sensitive to variations in word
sense from context. Krovetz and Croft examined linguistic confusion in knowledge retrieval
to determine the utility of word meanings in the selection process to the relevancy of
documents found. Furthermore, studies on afterwards are becoming more common in other
circumstances since post-processing is thought to be a feasible strategy to reduce errors or
improve performance. This study suggests a forward strategy based on a modified brute force
principle. It is concerned with ensuring that the outcomes of concatenating meaningless
syllables have been deleted or changed into new syllables that contribute to the formation of

words. The accuracy of the algorithms for a specific page is the ratio of valid words
discovered by the algorithms to the number of words in the ground truth.

4.0 Conclusion

Finally, and above all the proposed method achieved a high accuracy rate and
a low computation time was outperformed other methods used in Javanese manuscript
transliteration. Moreover, it can help scholars and researchers to read and understand the
content of Javanese manuscripts more easily and accurately, which can contribute to the
preservation and promotion of Javanese culture and history. The backtracking algorithm is an
effective solution to the scriptio continua problem in Javanese manuscript transliteration. The
research offers unique insights into the subject matter of Javanese manuscript transliteration
and illustrates the method's potential applications in conserving as well as advancing
Javanese cultural and historical treasures.
