The Poet and the Moth

Ahmad Qandeel Neighbouring houses have locked me out
They are as dark fate
She came at dawn, a brilliant moth only you, poet, are here
like light, like the dawn of life, poet of tears and rain”.
like my heart astray, driven between two sorrows I said: “welcome, my sweet little neighbour
one open and one concealed. I love you, moth, for what you signify.
She said, “ with love’s wakeful eye, I saw You sacrificed your life for life’s rising tide
your window still open at dawn so that we never see its ebbing away.
and the dim light of your lamp Companion of light! In the whirling of your wings
still burning low like the fragments of a dream Poetry is richer for your being
I saw scraps of paper scattered on your bed Winged phantom, child of night and wakefulness
some scribbled over with unfinished lines A ray of your spirit vies with the dawn
like a bird about to take off; in the dream of the dawn’s bright tresses.”
And in the air of your room the echo of a melody She knew her enchanted universe I exclaimed:
its tunefulness a rival to the lute”. ‘Will you not then tell the world about me?’
And I said; “ this is where I want to dwell
nearer to the solid earth”.
