POLYMERISATION

INTRODUCTION
 Two types of polymerization
a) Addition polymerization
b) Condensation polymerization

Addition Polymerisation
 Two monomers with carbon-carbon double bond (C=C) react to form polymer
 Types of addition polymerization :
Addition Homopolymerisation Addition Heteropolymerisation

 Addition of the same monomer  Additition of two or more different

monomers
Eg : Eg:

Exercise :

2-butene
2-phenyl-2-butene
Write an equation, formation of homopolymer and heteropolymer from monomers above.
Condensation Polymerisation
 Small molecules such as water is eliminated as the monomers react to form polymer
 Each monomer used for making condensation polymer must have at least two functional group
per molecule
 Monomer of condensation polymerization :
a) Carboxylic acid
b) Alcohol
c) Amines
 2 types of condensation polymerization

Homopolymerisation Heteropolymerisation

 Condensation of the same monomer  Condensation of different monomer

 Monomer : carboxylic acid  Monomer : carboxylic acid, alcohol &
amines
1. COOH + ROH = polyester
2. COOH + NH2 = polyamide
