Numerous approaches exist for discovering romantic connections, ranging from conventional customs

that have evolved over time to contemporary techniques shaped by technological advances. An
illustration of this is seen in a cultural practice from the Philippines, referred to as courtship or
"panliligaw" in Tagalog. In this tradition, a man undertakes a series of gestures to win the affection of a
woman he is interested in, as highlighted by Torres (2023).

In an article pertaining to “ Why Traditional Courtship is better than modern courtship”, stated that
courting was defined as the process of forming romantic relationships among Filipino students. During
the 90s, gender stereotypes began to replace traditional courting actions, shaping the behavior of men
and women according to social norms. Traditionally, men were expected to initiate declarations of love,
while women were encouraged to maintain an air of mystery. Effective communication was crucial for
successful courtship. However, contemporary couples rely more on technology than handwritten letters
to connect. Despite this shift, receiving a handwritten letter remains a cherished gesture in today's
generation.

According to an article “Courtship in the Philippines: Past and Present” A bigger difference between the
courtship process of the past and the way it is persued nowadays is in the SPEED in which in can take
place. And although technology has played a key role in this, the urbanization of city areas might also
have something to do with it, for in a city, everything tends to speed up. Still, though, and even in the
passing of the decades, Filipinas (and their families) are still looking for the same thing: A dependable,
hard working and committed man that will make their daughter’s life better.

Technology has facilitated even easier interaction. The rise of the internet means that physical presence
or being at the woman's home is no longer necessary for men and women to connect; a mere click
suffices. When considering the Philippine context, shifts in trends and behaviors closely resemble those
in Western cultures. In recent decades, Filipinos have adopted a more pragmatic stance concerning their
relationships, driven by the increased utilization and advancements in technology, as well as shifts in the
social environment (Ogena, 1999).

According to an article “The Art of Making Ligaw: Traditional and Modern Courtship in the Philippines"
traditional courtship is Influenced by Spanish colonization and Catholicism, Filipino courtship differs
from Western cultures. It often starts with playful teasing called "tuksuhan" and friendly dates, leading
to further courtship or avoidance based on mutual feelings. Serious suitors, known as "manliligaw,"
formally introduce themselves to the family. A historic practice called "paninilbihan" involves a man
working for the woman's family as part of courting. The tradition of "harana" or serenading, where
young men sing beneath women's windows with guitars, seeks their attention and romantic approval.
