MAKING SELECTION AND ORGANISATION
MATERIALS SELECTION
Selection of materials is based on:
 Finish (aesthetics); A surface finish can be added to most materials to change its
colour and texture. Cost; The price of your end product will depend on the cost of
each part.
 Availability: Considering how easy it is to get hold of materials is also a design
factor.
 Machines and equipment availability
Fixtures and fittings should be sourced and sorted. This helps to meet the overall
costing of the product.
MATERIAL TESTING
Materials are tested to check whether they are fit for the purpose they were intended
for.
The scientific testing include:
Density test: is a type of materials test to determine the density of compacted soil, rock,
or other materials
Heat/melting point test: Melting point determination is the thermal analysis most
frequently used to characterize solid crystalline materials
Tensile test: applies force to a material specimen in order to measure the material's
response to tensile (or pulling) stress.
Izod impact test: a standard test that measures the impact energy needed to fracture a
material
Conductivity/insulation test: measures the total resistance between any two points
separated by electrical insulation
Hardness test: typically performed by pressing a specifically dimensioned and loaded
object (indenter) into the surface of the material you are testing
Testing can also be done for suitability of electronic components mechanical
components and graphics based components.

PLANNING AND MANUFACTURE

There is need to follow proper steps to produce the end product in the correct order.
This can be done through
 Flow chart
 Manufacturing plan
FLOW CHARTS
Shows logical sequence of operations
Instructions are put in rectangular boxes
Decision making are in diamond shaped boxes.

Manufacturing plan

 It is a more detailed instructions or information put in a table form.

 It has instruction for each stage manufacture.
 It has quality control checks, time allocation, health and safety consideration.
Sequential instructions.
These are clear drawings that demonstrate steps in making something.
