Output 2
Develop a hands-on student activity for
the assigned principle - Sectional Plane
method.
Hands on student activity - 3 D model
The students can explore, observe or apply the concept of the sectional plane method.
Hands on student activity - 3 D model
The students can link the 3D model to there 2D solution

2D solution

3D solution (model)
Rational for 3D model
✓ 3D models are easily examined and
manipulated without damage to physical
artefact.
✓ 3D models give students unlimited time with
an artefact.
✓ 3D models are easily shared and will help the
understanding of the 2D solution.
✓ 3D models have presence. That means it can
be examined, but it’s special in the way that it
can be interacted with. Functionality can be
built on and around a 3D model. Models can
be manipulated, animated, and scaled.
✓ 3D models can be analysised, the students
can explore, observe or apply the concept of
the sectional plane method.
Question teachers may use at different stages of
activity to ensure maximum student understanding
1. What principle does the model represent?

2. What are the important features that are included in the

model? And why are they important?

3. What do the blue, red and green lines represent?

4. How can we test the model represents the principle we are

trying to represent?

5. How could we make the model more realistic? Is using two

different types of wood a good idea? Why?

6. What would happen if you removed one feature of your

model? Would the model still represent your principle.

7. What other types of model could be made to represent the

sectional planes?

8. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this model

to represent sectional planes .
