As was done in the first two volumes, the projects in this issue
are organized by the project number, which corresponds to the
starting dates of the projects.
In the past decade, MVRDV has completed some of their world-
famous projects including the Book Mountain and Market Hall.
These projects were featured in the second volume when they
were still in the planning phase. Back then, we thought these
projects were visionary.

New laws in the Netherlands require covered areas for traditional
open air meat and fish markets due to new hygiene constraints.
MVRDV posed two questions in response to these challenges:
“Can we use this operation to evolve the market typology as well
as densify the city center?” and “Can we increase quality as well
as density of programming at Blaak?”
The Market Hall is part of the new inner city heart of the
Laurens Quarter, the original pre-war center of Rotterdam. The
building is a sustainable combination of food, leisure, living
and parking, all fully integrated to enhance and make the most
of the synergetic possibilities of the different functions. The
hall is formed from an arch of privately developed apartments,
strategically allowing private investment and initiative to
provide a public space. The result is a covered square which acts

Section (scale: 1/1,000)/断面図(縮尺:1/1,000) remains lively due to restaurants on its first floor.
The apartments follow strict Dutch laws regarding natural
daylight: all rooms that require natural light are situated on the
outside. Kitchens, dining rooms and storage are positioned at
the market side, establishing a connection to the market. The
front and backside are covered with a flexible suspended glass
facade, allowing for maximum transparency and a minimum of
structure for the facility, which will be the largest of its kind in
Europe.

The Pushed Slab is located between two completely different
urban grids: the dense city fabric of blocks and streets in the

from preconceived ideas. A lot of our interesting projects come
from a dialogue. We explore projects, show the findings using
our visualization, start communicating to the clients and to the
society. Both prototypes and typologies are almost always very
visual. We always try to translate information into form and
shape and start creating possible outcomes. What it also means
is that we don’t always have only one solution.
This usually leads to a better decision. We don’t present
ourselves as geniuses with one idea that has to be executed,
although, sometimes the clients prefer to be given just one
solution. We think it’s important to talk about the question
too, and not just give answers. We ask questions that can be
interpreted in different ways. We really like to have a dialogue.
This way of working also allows us to respond to sudden changes
in projects without starting all over from the beginning because
we already have a lot of pre-studied options. Prototypes and
typologies also help us objectify what we are doing because they
show the sources of our thinking.

The design process of the home closely followed MVRDV’s
commitment to working closely with clients throughout. With
almost daily communications, the end result comes as close to a
tailor-made home as possible.
When balancing municipality requirements for a retro style
architecture, the home became a contemporary take on 1930s
modernism with its long, cream, shallow brickwork, full-height
glazing, and the contrasting integration of the flat and fluid, open
and enclosed, flexible and defined. As the newly built homes in
the vicinity are more vernacular in their modernist approach, this
variation on a more avant-garde architecture has been subject of
discussions with the municipality.
