Removal

Installation Warnings and recommendations

Torque settings Unless otherwise advised by the manufacturer, the following procedures are recommended:

Always renew the timing chain

Special tools
If the timing chain is to be re-used, mark the running direction before removal

Never turn the engine in the direction opposite to that of normal operation

! Note: Avoid bending, torsion or traction

Always use new gaskets

Removal

Disconnect the battery earth cable

Remove the right-hand front wheel

Drain the engine oil

Turn the tensioner anti-clockwise to release the tension

! Note: At removal, mark the direction of rotation; when refitting ensure the drive belt rotates in the
same direction

Remove the ancillary drive belt

If applicable:

Support the engine

Remove the right-hand engine mount

Fit the special tool to the coolant pump pulley ( TEN00009 )

Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts

Remove the coolant pump pulley

Remove the dipstick

Disconnect the throttle body inlet hose

Remove the oil filler cap

Remove the air filter housing

Disconnect the engine wiring from the top of the engine

Remove the ignition coils

Disconnect the remaining wiring, lines and hoses

Remove the valve cover

Check the camshaft alignment holes

Fit the camshaft locking tool ( TEN00004 )

! Note: Ensure correct fitting

Remove the access plug

Fit the crankshaft locking pin ( TEN00002 )

Loosen the crankshaft pulley centre bolt

Use the special tool to counterhold ( TEN00008 )

Remove the timing chain upper cover

Remove the timing chain lower cover

 Remove the chain tensioner

Remove the seal

Remove the timing chain upper guide

Loosen the oil pump gearwheel

Use the special tool to counterhold ( TEN00006 )

Compress the tensioner

Remove the oil pump gearwheel centre bolt

Remove the oil pump chain together with the gearwheel

Loosen the camshaft gearwheel bolts

Remove the camshaft gearwheels

Remove the crankshaft gearwheel

Remove the timing chain

Remove the chain guide

Remove the chain tensioner guide

Installation

Clean the contact surfaces

Check that the crankshaft is still locked at the flywheel ( TEN00002 )

Check that the camshaft locking tool is in position ( TEN00004 )

Fit the chain guide

Fit the chain tensioner guide

Fit the crankshaft gearwheel

 ! Note: Ensure correct fitting

Fit the timing chain

Refit the camshaft gearwheels

! Note: Use new bolts

Tighten the bolts finger-tight only

Refit the upper chain guide

Fit the timing chain tensioner

Renew the seal

Tighten the camshaft gearwheel bolts

Further refitting is in the reverse order of removal

Remove all the locking tools ( TEN00004 , TEN00002 )

Reconnect the battery earth cable

Torque settings

Timing chain tensioner guide

Timing chain tensioner guide 20 - 24 (Nm)

Timing chain guide

Timing chain guide (Upper) 8 - 12 (Nm)

Timing chain guide (Lower) 20 - 24 (Nm)

Timing chain tensioner

Timing chain tensioner (Renew the washer) 18 - 22 (Nm)

Camshaft gearwheel

Camshaft gearwheel 70 - 80 (Nm)

Oil pump gearwheel

Oil pump gearwheel 22 - 28 (Nm)

Timing cover

Timing cover (Lower section) 8 - 12

Coolant pump pulley 23 - 27 (Nm)

Engine oil drain plug

Engine oil drain plug (Renew the washer) 35 - 40 (Nm)

Wheel bolts

Wheel bolts (Tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern) 115 - 130 (Nm)
