MAXILLARY FIRST PREMOLAR-BUCCAL ASPECT

-mesial outline of crown is slightly

concave from cervical line to mesial
contact area
-mesial slope of buccal cusp is
straight and longer than distal slope
-distal outline of crown below cervical
line is straight upto distal contact
area
-mesiodistally the crown width is
2mm less at cervix than at the
contacrt area
-buccal cusp is long and pointed
BUCCAL ASPECT -contd

-buccal ridge runs

from cusptip to
cervical margin on
buccal surface
-dev depressions are Buccal ridge
sometimes seen on
either side of buccal
ridge thereby
demarcating buccal
aspect into middle
buccal,mesiobuccal
and distobuccal lobes
MAXILLARY FIRST PREMOLAR-LINGUAL ASPECT

-crown tapers toward lingual

side and lingual cusp is
smooth and spheroidal
-lingual portion of crown is
narrower than buccal portion
and hence part of mesial and
distal surfaces of crown and
Lingual cusp
root can be seen from lingual
aspect
Lingual portion of root is
smooth and convex at all
points
Buccal cusp
Note: the lingual cusp is less
bulkier than buccal cusp and also
at a higher level than buccal cusp

LINGUAL CUSP

BUCCAL CUSP

Mesial and distal aspects of the tooth are

partially visible from lingual aspect as the
proximal surfaces are converging lingually
MAXILLARY Ist PREMOLAR-MESIAL ASPECT
-roughly trapezoidal
-tips of buccal and lingual cusps are
within the confines of the root trunk
-most max 1st premolars have 2
roots,one buccal and one lingual

-seen from the mesial aspect the buccal

outline curves outward below cervical
line upto the crest of curvature(at jn of
cervical and middle 3rd ) and from there
the outline continues to the tip of buccal
cusp

-lingual outline is a smoothly curved line

extending from cervical line upto tip of
lingual cusp(crest of curv ‘tre at centre
of middle 3rd )
MAXILLARY Ist PREMOLAR-MESIAL ASPECT
-centered on the mesial surface is a
marked depression called mesial
developmental depression that
continues with the deep dev
depression on root surface

-there is a well defined developmental

groove on mesial marginal ridge .This
groove is continous with central dev
groove on occlusal surface .

-buccal and lingual roots are often

steaight but may take a buccal ao
lingual inclination apical to middle 3rd

-root trunk is long making up about

half of root length
MAXILLARY Ist PREMOLAR- DISTAL ASPECT
-similar to mesial surface but
for the following difference
1.distal surface of crown is flat
or slightly convex (no dev
depression)

2.curvature of cervical line is

less on distal surface /very
often it is a straight line.

3.no dev groove crossing distal

marginal ridge

4.root trunk is flattened on the

distal surface
Mesial developmental
depression

Mesial marginal groove

MAXILLARY Ist PREMOLAR
DISTAL ASPECT
MAXILLARY Ist PREMOLAR-OCCLUSAL ASPECT
-resembles roughly a six
sided/hexagonal figure

-crown is wider on buccal than

on lingual side(mesial and distal
margins converge lingually)

-B-L dimension of crown is

greater than M-D dimension

-occlusal surface of max 1st

premolar is circumscribed by
cusp ridge and marginal ridges
namely MB cusp ridge,DB cusp
ridge,Mesial and Distal
marginal ridges
MAXILLARY Ist PREMOLAR-OCCLUSAL ASPECT
Grooves
1.central dev groove: demarcates
buccal and lingual cusps and extends
from mesial pit to distal pit

2.mesial marginal dev groove:is

connected to cen dev groove and MBDG
crosses the mesial marginal ridge

3 mesiobuccal dev groove and

distobuccal dev groove :are 2
collateral dev grooves located to the
inner aspect of mesial and distal
DBDG
MMDG
marginal ridges and connected to
cen dev groove

-Junction of MBDG,DBDG and CDG CDG

are pointed depressions and are
named as mesial and distal
developmental pits.
MAX Ist PREMOLAR-OCCLUSAL ASPECT (continued)

Fossae:
1.Mesial triangular
fossa:located distal
to mesial marginal
ridge
2.Distal triangular
fossa: located
immediately mesial MTF
to distal marginal DTF
ridge
Buccal and Lingual
triangular ridges:
Buccal traingular
ridge extends from
tip of the buccal
cusp to the center of
BTR
the central dev
groove and Lingual
traingular ridge
descends from the LTR
tip of the lingual
cusp to the center of
the central groove
MAXILLARY SECOND PREMOLAR

-closely
resembles the
1st premolar
-is less angular
giving a rounded
effect to the
crown from all
aspects
-has a single
root
MAXILLARY 2nd PREMOLAR-BUCCAL ASPECT

-buccal cusp
is less
pointed
-mesial slope
of buccal
cusp is
shorter
-buccal ridge
is less
prominent
MAX 2nd PREMOLAR
LINGUAL ASPECT

-similar to that of 1st

premolar
-lingual cusp is slightly
longer
MAXILLARY 2nd PREMOLAR-MESIAL ASPECT

-buccal and lingual cusps

are of equal length
-there is greater distance
between cusp tips
-no mesial dev depression
on the mesial aspect of
crown
-root carries a shallow dev
groove
-no mesial marginal dev
groove crossing marginal
ridge
MAXILLARY 2nd PREMOLAR-DISTAL ASPECT

-no outstanding
variation from
that of mesial
aspect
MAXILLARY 2nd PREMOLAR-OCCLUSAL ASPECT

Occlusal
Aspect(differences
compared to max 1st
premolar) BTR
-outline of crown is
DTF
more rounded or oval
-central dev groove is
shorter and multiple
MTF
supplementary grooves
may be seen
LTR
Occlusal surface may
have a wrinkled
appearance
