REFLECTIONS ON SONIA

GUINANSACA’S POEM
presented by Joyce Siaka
EWRT D002
The poem that I’m going to discuss about today is from
Somewhere We Are Human, edited by Reyna Grande and
Sonia Guiñansaca (2022). Sonia Guiñansaca’s poetic
tapestry is a story of reunification, the threads of families
are wound through her verses, leading to both of
separations and connections.
Part 1: Departures and Struggles
Guiñansaca uncovers the heart-rending
goodbyes of her father and the enigmatic
vanishing of Marni, uncovering the emotional,
relational, and financial baggage that forms part
and parcel of these migrations.
Part 2: Navigating the skies and multifaceted feelings

At five, Guiñansaca reveals a complicated

emotion, a barely perceptible undertone that
mirrors the un-accustomed alienation born of
distance. Her verses equally address the fine line
between love and loss in adapting to a new
place.
Part 3: Mapping as teenager

Guiñansaca uses Google Maps as a metaphor,

at sixteen, to show the constraints of metrics in
representing her family’s journey.Sore knees
become potent symbols of great struggles,
prompting thoughts about the hardiness required
to navigate life’s bumpy road.
Part 4: Journey beyond measure

Guiñansaca takes the readers to inconceivable

difficulties, devoid of rules and limits that restrict
people in everyday life to reveal miraculous aspects
of surviving. Each line in this poem serves as proof of
toughness in weakness, defying the stereotypes and
showing the immense possibilities of the humankind.
Part 5: The Question of leaving

Sonia asks an emotional question about the act

of leaving, amd forces the reader to think about
the ambiguity of leaving – the sadness of
separation, the fear of unfamiliar, and
uncommunicated connection that transcends
space.
In this poetic journey, Sonia Guiñansaca takes their
readers on a story full of threads of human resilience.
Her verses mean the blending of family separation
and connections again showing how miraculous the
connections are and how through resilience and love
these bonds remain connected. .
For my point of view, Sonia Guiñansaca also
employs various devices in her poem to enhance
his intensity. These tools enable her to express
the complicated feelings and thoughts about her
experiences with family separation and coming
back together when they had separate families
and reunite later on.
