The Urdu and the New English Translation of the Mass Comparison Kenneth I Massey "Many will find

it hard to adjust to unfamiliar texts after nearly forty years of continuous use of the previous translation. The change will need to be introduced with due sensitivity, and the opportunity for catechesis that it presents will need to be firmly grasped. I pray that in this way any risk of confusion or bewilderment will be averted, and the change will serve, instead, as a springboard for a renewal and a deepening of Eucharistic devotion all over the English-speaking world." Pope Benedict XVI The first English translation of The Roman Missal came out in the early 1970s. It aimed for a spirit of the texts rather than an exact literal translation of the Latin words. A second revision of these texts occurred in 1975. Starting this Advent, the new English translation of the Mass (The third edition of the Roman Missal) will be used, as you will be well aware of by now. This is the third Edition of Missale Romanum (2002) long awaited new English translation of the Missal. Finally! It is this translation from the original Latin, which most countries that have difficulty with Latin rely on to revise or produce their Roman Missals in their vernacular language. At this moment in time, I am not aware of any plans for the new Urdu Missal. For those who are wondering what are these changes and how they differ from Urdu Translation before and after Advent? I will briefly share my findings below covering on some (texts) parts of the Mass. The First Urdu edition was Published in1974 with the permission of Cardinal Joseph Marie Anthony Cordeiro. On the 12th November 1996, Pakistan Catholic Bishops Conference promulgated a new translation which was published in 1997. This edition of the Roman Missal was translated into easier al s rdu according to original atin, but the translation is rather dynamic in some places. The original Latin Missal and 1975 Revised English translation were used. The influence of English translation is quite apparent as you will notice, and what about some texts that are not found in the English Mass?

The Order of Mass The Introductory Rites Greeting

1973: The Lord be with you. And also with you Urdu: Khud wand p ke s th ho

New: The Lord be with you. (Ruth 2:4)

And with your spirit (Et cum spiritu tuo) Galatians 6:18, 2 Timothy 4:22 Translation of spirit is ruh not there in Urdu as in the 1973 one.. --------------

Penitential Act
New: through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault Urdu: Repetition (mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa) is missing as in the 1973 English version hence also in Urdu. Gloria

New: Glory to God in the highest, (Luke 2:14) and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen Urdu: lam-i-b l par hud ko al l, ur am n par nek n yat dm on ke liye sal mat . i hud wand hud , sm n b dsh h,

In Gloria, you will notice it is a little longer more poetic and beautiful. This is a more literal translation in New English one like we have in Urdu.
Gloria uplifts the congregation and reminds us of the hope, salvation and redemption brought by Gods grace.i

The Liturgy of the Word

The Concluding Rites

Dismissal The addition of three alternatives to the standard dismissal at the end of Mass, Ite, missa est (Go forth, the Mass is ended): 1. Ite ad Evangelium Domini annuntiandum (Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord) 2. Ite in pace, glorificando vita vestra Dominum (Go in peace, glorifying the Lord with your life) 3. Ite in pace (Go in peace) New English:

Go forth, the Mass is ended. Or: Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord. Or: Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. Or: Go in peace.
Urdu: The only option given in the Urdu Altar Missal: n this is a combination of the two options Go forth, the Mass is ended and Go in peace.. The other options are found in atholik Ib dat ki kitab published by St. Paul Communication Centre 2005, pg. 65: n aur Kh khushkh n tek pahun n. Or Kh Kh Kh khshe. , (A Priestly Blessing, the Benediction from Numbers 6:24-26) I hope you will find this comparison helpful. I am not an expert on the Liturgy and have done my best with the limited resources at my disposal. If you find any errors, or if you can provide some additional information, please let me know.

By further studying and understanding we can appreciate the beauty of Liturgy in Urdu and English deepening our participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Please have a look at the some of the resources available in English.
