FOREWORD

This handbook has covered introduction, constructional


detail of Emergency window in AC Coaches, instructions and
precautions during inspections and maintenance. Wherever
required, sketches and coloured photographs have been
provided to make the understanding clear.

I am sure that the handbook will be useful to the concerned


staff to ensure proper maintenance of emergency window in
AC Coaches.

Technological up-gradation and learning is continuous


process. Hence feel free to write us for any addition/
modifications or in case you have any suggestion to improve
the handbook. Your contribution in this direction shall be
highly appreciated.

We welcome any suggestion for addition improvements

PREFACE
Emergency windows in AC Coaches is very important
to escape trapped passenger at the time of accident or any other
emergent situation when it is not possible to step down from
main doors. At present, 04 modified emergency windows being
fitted in every coach.

Knowledge of proper maintenance of Emergency


window in Workshops and Coaching depots in various
schedule of Coach is necessary to concerned staff.

The purpose of this handbook is to enhance knowledge


and competence of relevant staff in dealing maintenance of
emergency window in workshops and coaching depots.

It is clarified that this handbook does not supersede any


existing procedures and practices laid down in the maintenance
instructions issued by manufacturers or by RDSO/ LKO.

1.0 General introduction: Emergency openable window is a
safety provision in passenger Coaches for passengers to
exit in any emergency situation i.e. Accident, Fire incident
etc., when safely exit of passengers is not possible from
main doors.

Emergency windows are provided as the third window


from both side doors on either side in passenger
compartment. Total 04 numbers of emergency windows
are provided in each passenger coach. A sticker is pasted
on each emergency window containing instructions for
opening of emergency window in any emergent situation.

2.0 Description: In AC Coaches, Emergency windows are


being provided as the third window from both side doors
on either side. The main components of emergency
window are following-

(a) Window Frame assembly – 01


(b) Sealing rubber for emergency window -01
(c) Rubber profile for sealed window- 01
(d) Window glass- 01
(e) Handle - 02
(f) Wire Clip -01

(a) Window frame assembly: A frame of stainless steel is
welded at the location of emergency window to fix and
support window glass and other components of
Emergency window. Window frame assembly should
be as per RCF Drawing No. CC 14620 alt ‘b’ or latest.

(b) Sealing rubber for Emergency window: A Sealing
rubber is provided on outside core of window frame to
seal window from outside and support to window glass
as depicted in figure given below. (ICF Drg. No. ICF/SK-5-
4-176)

(c) Rubber Profile for sealed window: A rubber profile is
used to seal window from inside and support window
glass as shown in fig. 2.5.

(d) Window glass: A toughened safety glass of 5.5/6 mm
thickness to IS 2553- Part II made from ‘A’ quality flat
transparent glass to IS 2835 is used. A reflective sun
control film of smoke grey colour is pasted on inside
surface of outer glass. The glass is fixed between sealing
rubber and rubber profile and rest on emergency
window frame.

(e) Handle: Two numbers of handles are stuck on window


glass with help of prescribed adhesive for easy removal
of glass during emergency.

(f) Wire Clip: A wire clip is attached at one end of rubber
profile to easy pull of rubber profile during emergency
for removing of window glass.

3.0 Procedure of fitment of emergency window: Following


steps are involved in fitment of emergency window in AC
Coaches.
(a) Welding of window frame assembly at nominated
location.
(b) Fixing of sealing rubber on outside core of window
frame.

(c) Fixing of rubber profile at inside core of window
frame.
(d) Fitting of window glass between rubber sealing and
window rubber profile.
(e) Sticking of two numbers of handles on window glass
with the help of prescribed solution. Fixing of handle
with tape temporally up to 24 hrs. for drying of
solution and strengthening of joint.
(f) Attachment of wire clip at the one end of robber profile
and securing of handle of wire clip in box cover with
glass.
(g) Pasting of stickers containing instruction about
opening of emergency window in emergent situation.

4.0 Maintenance Schedule for emergency window :

Following maintenance schedules to be followed in Open


line and Workshop-

(A) Maintenance in open line:

(i) Trip Schedule:-


 Observation of window glass for any crack, broken or
damage.
 Observation of Clip wire securing box.
 Observations of Handles

(ii)Weekly Schedule:
 All items of Trip schedule.
 Observation of any leakage from sealing rubber.

(iii) Monthly Schedule

 All Items of Weekly schedule.
 Condition of sealing rubber
 Condition of rubber profile.

(iv) Quarterly Schedule:


 All items of monthly schedule
 Visual inspection of all fittings of Emergency window
assembly i.e. safety latch, stickers.

(v) IOH Schedule:


 All items of quarterly schedule.
 Condition of clip wire with handle.
 Check fitting of sealing rubber and rubber profile

(B) Maintenance in Workshop:


 Dismantling of window assembly.
 Broken, cracked, defaced or scratched glass should
be replaced and the window frame repaired as
necessary.
 Glass should be cleaned with lime and detergent
before refitting.
 The rubber profile between the glass and the frame
should be changed every time the glass is removed.
 The sealing rubber beading between window and
coach body should be replaced if found set,
deteriorated, or damaged, to ensure air tightness.
