1 Overview
Routine maintenance ensures that the protection mechanism in the equipment is in a normal
state. Then, services can be protected upon an equipment failure.
Symbol Describes
Symbol Describes

Indicates the position of the grounding point.
1.2.2 ESD
When you install and maintain equipment, take antistatic measures to prevent equipment
damage.
The general rules for electrostatic prevention are as follows:
l Check that the equipment is securely grounded.
l Always wear an ESD wrist strap during the operation.
CAUTION
Wear a well-grounded ESD wrist strap whenever you touch any equipment or board. Make sure
that the wrist strap fully touches your skin. Insert the connector of the ESD strap into the ESD
socket in the subrack.
For the method of how to wear an ESD wrist strap, refer to Figure 1-1.
l Check the validity and functionality of the wrist strap. Its resistance value must be within
0.75 mega ohm to 10 mega ohm. If the validity period (usually two years) of the wrist strap
expires or the resistance value fails to meet requirements, use a functioning wrist strap.
l Do not touch a board with your clothing. It generates static electricity beyond the protection
scope of the wrist strap.
l Wear an ESD wrist strap and place the board on an antistatic pad when you replace
board or chips. Use antistatic tweezers or extraction tools to replace chips. Do not touch
chips, circuits, or pins with your bare hands.
l Keep the boards and other ESD sensitive parts to be installed in antistatic bags. Place the
removed boards and components on an antistatic pad or other antistatic materials. Do not
use non-antistatic materials such as white foams, common plastic bags, or paper bags to
pack boards or let them touch boards.
l Wear an ESD wrist strap when operating the ports of boards because they are also ESD-
sensitive. Discharge the static electricity of cables and protective sleeves before you connect
them to the ports.
l Reserve some materials (such as antistatic boxes and bags) for packaging board in the room
for future use.
1.2.3 Fibers
This section describes how to use fiber safely, including how to use and clean it correctly.
DANGER
Laser beams from the optical interface board or fiber may cause injuries to human eyes! Avoid
direct eye exposure to laser beams from the optical interface or fiber connector during installation
and maintenance of the board or fiber.
Figure 1-3 shows the air filter caps that are not recommended.
NOTE
The air filter caps made of soft rubber are not recommended, because they collect dust and sundries. This
type of caps provides poor dustproof capability.
Connecting a Fiber
WARNING
When a loopback test is performed at optical interfaces by using a fiber jumper, the optical
attenuation must be increased to avoid damage to the equipment due to extremely high optical
power of the laser. For the board to which an attenuator can be added, an attenuator can be added
to the receive optical interface.
When connecting a fiber, insert the fiber gently into the optical interface. When the optical power
is extremely high, the attenuator must be used to avoid damage to the optical interface.
DANGER
Before inserting or removing a fiber on the Raman amplifying board CRPC, shut down the pump
laser to avoid damage to human body due to extremely high optical power of the laser.
The CRPC imposes high requirement on the fiber loss of the line nearby, as shown in Table
1-2.
NOTE
The line interface on the CRPC connects to the optical interface on the ODF through fiber connectors.
Other connection points adopt the fiber splicing form.
For details on how to use fiber connectors, refer to the Supporting Tasks.
Cleaning a Fiber
Use special cleaning tools and materials to clean the fiber connectors and optical interfaces.
The following is a list of the cleaning tools and materials that are commonly used:
WARNING
Alcohol is not recommended and formalin is forbidden.
CAUTION
Before using a specific magnifier to check the cleanliness of a fiber connector, use an optical
power meter to test the fiber to ensure that no laser beam exists in the fiber.
Backing up device data to the NMS Server or the NMS Client Monthly
Table 1-4 provides the tools required for routine maintenance and the usage.

optical module.
2 Operation Guide
This chapter describes the items of routine maintenance and how to operate them.
The intelligent power adjustment (IPA) function can be used to avoid direct eye exposure to
laser radiation in the case of a fiber cut. Checking the IPA function is to make sure that IPA can
be normally started.
2.8 Checking the IPA Function of Raman System
The power of the pump light from Raman amplifiers is very high. Before you turn on a Raman
amplifier, it is suggested that you configure and enable IPA function. The intelligent power
adjustment (IPA) function can be used to avoid direct eye exposure to laser radiation in the case
of a fiber cut. Checking the IPA function is to make sure that the optical power of the entire line
is on a safety level.
2.9 Checking ALC Function
When the automatic level control (ALC) function is used, if the attenuation of a certain span
increases, only the input optical power of this span decreases. The output optical power of this
span and the input and output optical power of other amplifiers in the downstream do not change.
When the optical power of the link is extremely low, ALC prevents the transmission of services
from being affected. Checking the ALC function is to make sure that the ALC link can be
normally started when a fault occurs on a span.
2.10 Checking APE Function
The Automatic Power Equilibrium (APE) function can be used to avoid the changes in the power
flatness of each channel caused by the changes in fiber condition. Hence, ensure that the signal-
to-noise ratio at the receive end is at a normal level. Checking the APE function is to ensure that
the flatness of the optical power at the receive end is close to the value obtained during the
deployment commissioning, which then ensures the signal-to-noise ratio.
2.11 Checking EAPE Function
The enhanced automatic power pre-equilibrium (EAPE) adjustment can be enabled to avoid the
OSNR descending of each channel due to the fiber condition variation, therefore ensure that the
receive-end signal quality of each channel meets the preset requirement through adjusting the
transmitting-end optical power. Checking the EAPE function to make sure of the signal quality
and the availability of the services.
2.12 Replacing the Air Filter
Replace the air filter periodically to ensure the timely heat dissipation of the equipment.
2.13 Cleaning the Air Filter
If the configured air filter is of the type that requires removal and cleaning, clean it periodically
to ensure the timely heat dissipation of the equipment.
2.14 Checking the Operation Status of the Fan Board
Check the operation status of a fan board to determine the hardware status of the fan board. If
the fan board is faulty, replace the faulty board in time.
2.15 Checking the Spare Parts
Through reasonable configuration, distribution, and application of the spare parts, the response
time can be shortened.

Background Information
Configuration principles of spare parts is as following:
l Ensure that a minimum of two spare parts are available for each key component, because
the damaged component can interrupt services.
l If there is only one spare component, it can be used only for the specified purpose.
A spare component might be used to replace a faulty component that operates in the network.
As a result, routine maintenance is also required for the spare parts.
l Check-up of spare parts
l Storage of spare parts
Procedure
Step 1 Check-up of spare parts
l The NE version, board software version, board PCB version and FPGA versions of the
spare parts must be the same as those of the parts in-service.
l If the network is upgraded, the spare parts also need to be upgraded.
l Check regularly the versions and quality of the spare parts. Test the spare parts every three
months or half a year to ensure the normal operation of the equipment.
l Use a multimeter to test the voltage of the spare battery on the SCC board. The normal
voltage is 3.6 V.
NOTE
l The name and version of a board are on the front panel of the board. For details, refer to the Hardware
Description.
l The board information report function of the T2000 can also be used to obtain the board version. For details,
refer to the OptiX iManager T2000 Operation Guide (WDM).

B Glossary
A
Administrator A user who has authority to access all the Management Domains of the EMLCore
product. He has access to the whole network and to all the management functionalities.
Alarm A visible or an audible indication to notify the person concerned that a failure or an
emergency has occurred. See also Event.
B
Back up A method to copy the important data into a backing storage in case that the original is
damaged or corrupted.
C
Channel The trail at the channel layer.
Configuration data The data that configures the NE hardware for coordination between this NE and other
NEs in the entire network, and for operation of specified services. Configuration data is
the instruction file of NEs, and it is a key element to ensure that the network runs
efficiently. The typical configuration data includes board configuration, clock
configuration and protection relationship.
Configure To set the basic parameters of an operation object.
Connection A "transport entity" which consists of an associated pair of "unidirectional connections"
capable of simultaneously transferring information in opposite directions between their
respective inputs and outputs.
Current alarms Alarms that have not been cleared, or those that have been cleared but are not
acknowledged.
D
DWDM Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing. The technology utilizes the characteristics of
broad bandwidth and low attenuation of single mode optical fiber, employs multiple
wavelengths with specific frequency spacing as carriers, and allows multiple channels
to transmit simultaneously in the same fiber.
ESD Electrostatic Discharge. The phenomena the energy being produced by electrostatic
resource discharge instantly.
Ethernet A data link level protocol comprising the OSI model's bottom two layers. It is a broadcast
networking technology that can use several different physical media, including twisted
pair cable and coaxial cable. Ethernet usually uses CSMA/CD. TCP/IP is commonly
used with Ethernet networks.
Fan tray assembly A module which contains fans used for heat dissipation.
Fault A fault is the inability of a function to perform a required action. This does not include
an inability due to preventive maintenance, lack of external resources, or planned actions.
Frame A cyclic set of consecutive time slots in which the relative position of each time slot can
be identified.
IP address The only address in the TCP/IP protocol that is used to identify the communication port.
The IP address consists of four bytes in the decimal format, for example, 129.9.161.55.
IPA Intelligent Power Adjustment. The technology that the system reduces the optical power
of all the amplifiers in an adjacent regeneration section in the upstream to a safety level
if the system detects the loss of optical signals on the link. The loss of optical signals
may due to the fiber is broken, the performance of equipments trend to be inferior or the
connector is not plugged well. Thus, the maintenance engineers are not hurt by the laser
being sent out from the slice of broken fiber.
Laser The device that generates the directional light covering a narrow range of wavelengths.
Laser light is more coherent than ordinary light. Semiconductor diode lasers are the used
light source in fiber-optic system.
Main Topology The default T2000 client interface, a basic component of the human-machine interactive
interface. The topology clearly shows the structure of the network, the alarms of different
NEs, subnets in the network, the communication status as well as the basic network
operation status. All topology management functions are accessed here.

N
NE A network unit, including the hardware and software. Normally a network unit has at
least one SCC board, which manages and monitors the entire network unit. NE software
runs on the SCC board.
NE-side data The NE configuration data that is stored on the SCC board in the OptiX equipment. The
NE-side data can be uploaded to the T2000 and thus is stored on the T2000 side.
O
ODF Optical Distribution Frame. A frame which is used to transfer and spool fibers.
OLP A protection mechanism that adopts dual fed and selective receiving principle and single-
ended switching mode. In this protection, two pairs of fibers are used. One pair of fibers
forms the working route. The working route transmits line signals when the line is
normal. The other pair of fibers forms the protection route. The protection route carries
line signals when the line is broken or the signal attenuation is extremely large.
ONE Optical Network Element. An independent physical entity in an optical transmission
network. An ONE provides the functions that are similar to an NE. The ONE can be an
OTM, OLA, or OADM. One ONE can consist of multiple subrack NEs.
Optical connector A device that is mounted on the end of a fiber, light source, or receiver to couple light
into fibers. A connector joins two fiber ends, or one fiber end and a light source or
detector.
OTU Optical Transponder Unit. A device or subsystem that converts the accessed client signals
into the G.694.1/G.694.2-compliant WDM wavelength.
Output optical power The ranger of optical energy level of output signals.
R
Route The path a trail takes.
S
SD Signal Degrade. A signal that indicates the associated data has degraded in the sense that
a degraded defect condition is active.
SF Signal Fail. A signal that indicates the associated data has failed in the sense that a near-
end defect condition (non-degrade defect) is active.
W
Wavelength protection The wavelength protection group is important to describe the wavelength protection
group structure. Its function is similar to that of the protection subnet in the SDH NE. The
wavelength path protection can only work with the correct configuration of the
wavelength protection group.
WTR Wait to Restore. This command is issued when working channels meet the restoral
threshold after an SD or SF condition. It is used to maintain the state during the WTR
period unless it is pre-empted by a higher priority bridge request.
