1 Overview Routine Maintenance

Figure 1-1 Wearing an ESD wrist strap

When you take antistatic measures, take the following precautions:

l Check the validity and functionality of the wrist strap. Its resistance value must be within
0.75 mega ohm to 10 mega ohm. If the validity period (usually two years) of the wrist strap
expires or the resistance value fails to meet requirements, use a functioning wrist strap.
l Do not touch a board with your clothing. It generates static electricity beyond the protection
scope of the wrist strap.
l Wear an ESD wrist strap and place the board on an antistatic pad when you replace
board or chips. Use antistatic tweezers or extraction tools to replace chips. Do not touch
chips, circuits, or pins with your bare hands.
l Keep the boards and other ESD sensitive parts to be installed in antistatic bags. Place the
removed boards and components on an antistatic pad or other antistatic materials. Do not
use non-antistatic materials such as white foams, common plastic bags, or paper bags to
pack boards or let them touch boards.
l Wear an ESD wrist strap when operating the ports of boards because they are also ESD-
sensitive. Discharge the static electricity of cables and protective sleeves before you connect
them to the ports.
l Reserve some materials (such as antistatic boxes and bags) for packaging board in the room
for future use.

1.2.3 Fibers
This section describes how to use fiber safely, including how to use and clean it correctly.

Routine Maintenance 1 Overview

DANGER
Laser beams from the optical interface board or fiber may cause injuries to human eyes! Avoid
direct eye exposure to laser beams from the optical interface or fiber connector during installation
and maintenance of the board or fiber.

Protecting the Fiber Connector

In the case of the optical interfaces or the connectors of the fibers that are not in use, air filter
caps must be installed at the optical interfaces.
In the case of the removed optical interface boards, air filter caps must be installed at the optical
interfaces. The boards must be put into a proper packing box to keep the optical interfaces clean.
Figure 1-2 shows the air filter caps that are recommended.

Figure 1-2 Air filter caps that are recommended

Figure 1-3 shows the air filter caps that are not recommended.

Figure 1-3 Air filter caps that are not recommended

1 Overview Routine Maintenance

NOTE
The air filter caps made of soft rubber are not recommended, because they collect dust and sundries. This
type of caps provides poor dustproof capability.

Connecting a Fiber

WARNING
When a loopback test is performed at optical interfaces by using a fiber jumper, the optical
attenuation must be increased to avoid damage to the equipment due to extremely high optical
power of the laser. For the board to which an attenuator can be added, an attenuator can be added
to the receive optical interface.

When connecting a fiber, insert the fiber gently into the optical interface. When the optical power
is extremely high, the attenuator must be used to avoid damage to the optical interface.

DANGER
Before inserting or removing a fiber on the Raman amplifying board CRPC, shut down the pump
laser to avoid damage to human body due to extremely high optical power of the laser.

The CRPC imposes high requirement on the fiber loss of the line nearby, as shown in Table
1-2.

Table 1-2 Fiber connection requirement of the CRPC

Distance Loss (dB) Connector (Piece)

0-10km (0-6.21 miles) ≤0.1 0

10km-20km (6.21 ≤0.2 0

miles-12.43 miles)

NOTE
The line interface on the CRPC connects to the optical interface on the ODF through fiber connectors.
Other connection points adopt the fiber splicing form.

For details on how to use fiber connectors, refer to the Supporting Tasks.

Cleaning a Fiber
Use special cleaning tools and materials to clean the fiber connectors and optical interfaces.

The following is a list of the cleaning tools and materials that are commonly used:

l Special cleaning solvent (isoamylol is preferred, followed by propyl alcohol)

OptiX OSN 6800 Intelligent Optical Transport Platform
Routine Maintenance 1 Overview

WARNING
Alcohol is not recommended and formalin is forbidden.

l Non-woven lens tissue

l Special compressed gas
l Cotton stick (medical cotton or long fiber cotton)
l Special cleaning roll
l Magnifier for optical connectors

CAUTION
Before using a specific magnifier to check the cleanliness of a fiber connector, use an optical
power meter to test the fiber to ensure that no laser beam exists in the fiber.

For how to clean a fiber, refer to the Supporting Tasks.

1.2.4 Network Management System Maintenance

This section describes the safety precautions for using the T2000.
l Do not change the server time when the T2000 is running. Set the system time before
installing the T2000.
– If there is a need to change the server time, exit the T2000 server and shut down the
database, and then restart it after the change.
– If there is a need to change the client time, exit the T2000 client, and then restart it after
the change.
l Do not change the name or IP address of the computer installed with the T2000 server
unless necessary.
l On the UNIX platform, when logging in to the T2000 server, you should use "T2000" as
the user name. On the Windows platform, when logging in to the T2000, you should use
the user name when the T2000 is installed. Do not change the login user of Windows.
l When the T2000 is running, ensure that data on the T2000 side and the data on the NE sides
are the same. When the configuration on the NE is complete and the NE is running normally,
use the manual synchronization function to make the NE-side data consistent with the
T2000-side data.
l Back up the T2000 database regularly to minimize the loss caused by system anomalies.
l Before you set the parameters, query the latest data on the NE side.
l Usually, when a hazardous operation is performed, the T2000 asks for confirmation.
l A T2000 license file is an authorized file and must be kept confidential. Do not make any
change to the license file. Otherwise, the license becomes invalid.

This section describes how to check the NE and the board states. Routine maintenance helps
engineers to locate faults in the NE and boards.
2.2 Querying Network-Wide Alarms
This section describes how to check the current network-wide alarms. Observing alarms helps
engineers to notice the abnormity of the equipment.
2.3 Browsing the Performance Events
By browsing performance events, you can check whether the equipment runs normally. If a fault
occurs, it can be cleared in time.
2.4 Checking Optical Power
The changes in optical power may affect the strength and sensitivity of the optical signals that
are transmitted over the line. To ensure the stable operation of the entire transmission system,
check the optical power periodically. That is, make sure that the input and output optical power
of the input and output ports are within the permitted range, and the optical power is adjusted
or a warning is provided upon a deviation. The optical power report provided by the T2000 is a
major reference for troubleshooting. After the alarm that indicates abnormal optical power is
detected, locate the fault by referring to the standard value that is recorded in the optical power
report.
2.5 Checking Temperature
During routine maintenance or in the case of a heat dissipation failure, checking the ambient
temperature of the equipment room or the working temperature of the equipment can guide
maintenance personnel to perform related operations. Then, potential faults can be rectified and
impact caused by abnormal temperature can be reduced as possible. In this manner, the stable
operation of the system is ensured.
2.6 Checking the Protection Switching State
Check the protection switching state regularly to detect and remove faults and then to ensure the
normal operation of the system.
2.7 Checking IPA Function

2 Operation Guide Routine Maintenance

The intelligent power adjustment (IPA) function can be used to avoid direct eye exposure to
laser radiation in the case of a fiber cut. Checking the IPA function is to make sure that IPA can
be normally started.
2.8 Checking the IPA Function of Raman System
The power of the pump light from Raman amplifiers is very high. Before you turn on a Raman
amplifier, it is suggested that you configure and enable IPA function. The intelligent power
adjustment (IPA) function can be used to avoid direct eye exposure to laser radiation in the case
of a fiber cut. Checking the IPA function is to make sure that the optical power of the entire line
is on a safety level.
2.9 Checking ALC Function
When the automatic level control (ALC) function is used, if the attenuation of a certain span
increases, only the input optical power of this span decreases. The output optical power of this
span and the input and output optical power of other amplifiers in the downstream do not change.
When the optical power of the link is extremely low, ALC prevents the transmission of services
from being affected. Checking the ALC function is to make sure that the ALC link can be
normally started when a fault occurs on a span.
2.10 Checking APE Function
The Automatic Power Equilibrium (APE) function can be used to avoid the changes in the power
flatness of each channel caused by the changes in fiber condition. Hence, ensure that the signal-
to-noise ratio at the receive end is at a normal level. Checking the APE function is to ensure that
the flatness of the optical power at the receive end is close to the value obtained during the
deployment commissioning, which then ensures the signal-to-noise ratio.
2.11 Checking EAPE Function
The enhanced automatic power pre-equilibrium (EAPE) adjustment can be enabled to avoid the
OSNR descending of each channel due to the fiber condition variation, therefore ensure that the
receive-end signal quality of each channel meets the preset requirement through adjusting the
transmitting-end optical power. Checking the EAPE function to make sure of the signal quality
and the availability of the services.
2.12 Replacing the Air Filter
Replace the air filter periodically to ensure the timely heat dissipation of the equipment.
2.13 Cleaning the Air Filter
If the configured air filter is of the type that requires removal and cleaning, clean it periodically
to ensure the timely heat dissipation of the equipment.
2.14 Checking the Operation Status of the Fan Board
Check the operation status of a fan board to determine the hardware status of the fan board. If
the fan board is faulty, replace the faulty board in time.
2.15 Checking the Spare Parts
Through reasonable configuration, distribution, and application of the spare parts, the response
time can be shortened.

Prerequisite
The equipment must be running normally.
This task must be performed in the network management center.
The NE must be configured and the data must be uploaded to the T2000.
The ALC function must be configured.
You must be an NM user with "NE monitor" authority or higher.

Maintenance Period

T2000

Procedure
Step 1 Choose Configuration > ALC Management from the Main Menu, and the ALC
management interface is displayed.
Step 2 Select the NG Link Information tab to view the state of each link in the lower area of the ALC
Management interface. If the queried link state differs from that provided in Table 2-33, check
the optical power of each station on the line to clear the fault of the line.
Step 3 Check the Automatic Regulation Switch parameter of the ALC link in the lower area of the
interface. Refer to Table 2-33. If the queried value of Automatic Regulation Switch differs
from that provided in Table 2-33, reconfigure the ALC function according to the actual
networking planning. For the procedure to configure ALC, refer to the "Configuring ALC" in

Prerequisite
The equipment must be running normally.

This task must be performed in the network management center.

The NE must be configured and the data must be uploaded to the T2000.

The APE function must be configured.

You must be an NM user with "NE monitor" authority or higher.
