Barn Design

A freestal barn provides for the resting, eating, exercising and drinking needs of the
dairy cow. A good interior layout allows convenient cow movement and access to feed,
water, freestalls, the milking center, and, if used, an exercise lot or pasture

Data:
· Single technological flow with two rows;
· Tie stable;
· The solution for the roof structure is a timber truss according to fig. 1;
· Brick masonry walls;
· Bay is 3m and 4.5m;
· Location of the building: Bacau

Design requirements are:

· Determine the technologocal length of the agriculture building for
cows;
· Design the height of the building
· Design the roof elements(purlins, top and bottom chord, stud(posts) and
diagonals)
· Draw the horizontal and transverse section

A. Technological length of the agricultural building

The building is required to shelter a number of 140 dairy cattle:

B. Building height:

The height of the building is established with the following relation:

C. 1. Purlin design:

a. Permanent load evaluation

Self load of sheeting:

· Zinc coated steel sheeting (0.5mm) 5.55
kg/m^2
· Vapor barrier
0.88 kg/m^2
· Roof boarding(2.4cm) 5.40
kg/m^2
· Polystyrene (5cm)
1.50 kg/m^2
· OSB
7.20 kg/m^2

Self load of the purlin:

We choose initial dimensions for the purlin:

Self load of the bracings:

b. Variable load evaluation

Snow load evaluation according to CR 1-1-3/2012

Wind load evaluation according to CR 1-1-4/2012:

kPa reference wind pressure from standard for Bacau

- exposure factor for a height "z" above ground

- gust factor

open field - abrasion factor

Corresponding area of current purlin:

Total load per of roof corresponding to the current purlin:

Total load per linear of roof corresponding to the current purlin

The purlin is subjected to skew bending

Static scheme of the purlin is a simply supported beam with the length equal to T acted in 2
planes by and . The corresponding bending moments are computed using following
formula

checking the strength

The capable bending moment of the sections are given by:

for treated wood

Strength condition is not checked

In order to satisfy the strength requiremend we have to increase the cross section
of the purlin

C.2 Timber truss design

The actions on the nodes will be equal to the reactions of the loads applied on the purlins
from the fundamental load scenario

Nodal loads on the truss:

a. Truss loads and efforts

For a section with the following dimensions:

We use Engilab Beam2D to compute the structure:

From the analysis of the timber truss we get the following values:
b. Checking the elements in tension:

Strength of firwood in tension:

Strength capacity of the section:

(maximum tension in member 4 and 7)

c. Checking the elements on compression:

Strength of firwood in compression:

Checking the stability in buckling:

=>

(maximum compression in member 1 and 3)
