Parameters:
Design Flood Flow, Q = 1036.00 m3/s
Dam Length = 308.00 m3/s

Energy Elevation = 10.34 masl

Afflux Elevation = 10.31 masl

US Apron Elevation = 6.00 masl

DS Apron Elevation (Dam Toe) = 6.00 masl

The theoretical velocity of flow at the toe of an overflow spillway may be computed by:

𝑽𝟏 = 𝟐𝒈 𝒁 + 𝒉𝒂 − 𝒅𝟏
eq. 1 -derived from Bernoulli's Energy Equation

𝑸 = 𝑽𝟏 𝑨 = 𝑽𝟏 𝒅𝟏 𝑳 eq. 2 -continuity equation

where:
Q = discharge
V1 = theoretical velocity at the toe (m/s)
L = length of the spillway
Z = vertical distance from upstream reservoir level to the dowstream toe floor level (m)
ha = upstream approach velocity head (m)
d1 = depth of flow at the toe (m)

ha = 0.03 m
d1 = 0.38 m OK -assume value of d1
V1-eq.1 = 8.81 m/s
-check values of V1 (should be the same for the 2 equations)
V2-eq. 2 = 8.81 m/s

Froude Number at the toe of the spillway can be computed as:

𝑽𝟏
𝑭𝑵𝟏 =
𝒈𝒅𝟏

FN1 = 4.55

Conjugate depth y2 can be obtained by the equation:

𝒅𝟐 𝟏
= 𝟏 + 𝟖𝑭𝟏 𝟐 − 𝟏
𝒅𝟏 𝟐

d2 = 2.27 m
