Historical Background of Meteorology

Objectives:

BC Centuries
3000 BC – 100 BC: The Beginnings of Meteorology

3000 BC - Ancient Indian writings are the first to include


discussions about the weather, cloud formations and so
on. (Upanishads)
600 BC - First Weather forecasts in Greece are formally
issued. Meteorology came from the Greek word
‘meteoros’, which means ‘high in the sky’. Thales qualify
as the first Greek meteorologist.
350 BC - Greek philosopher Aristotle writes Meteorology,
which describes all current knowledge about climate and
weather. (Meteorologica)
206 BC - First hygrometers used. Ancient hygrometers
are in use in China during the Western Han dynasty and
help the Chinese planning to plant crops.
200 BC - Compasses invented in China
100 BC- Windsocks are used as a basic guide to wind direction
and speed.
