Background
Corazon Aquino, born on January 25, 1933, and died on
August 1, 2009, was a prominent Filipino politician who
served as the 11th President of the Philippines from
1986 to 1992. She was the first female president of the
country and is considered an icon of democracy.

Corazon Aquino, known as "Cory" to the Filipino people,

became the figurehead of the opposition movement
following her husband's assassination. She emerged as
the leader of the unified opposition and formed the
political party "Laban" (Lakas ng Bayan) to challenge
Marcos' rule.
Aquino stepped down from the presidency in 1992 after
serving a single term, as the Philippine Constitution at
the time prohibited presidents from seeking re-election.
She continued to play an active role in politics and
various advocacies, including supporting human rights
and promoting democracy around the world.
Contributions
Restoration of Democracy: The People Power Revolution,
which culminated in February 1986, resulted in the ousting of
President Ferdinand Marcos, who had ruled the country
under martial law for more than 20 years. Aquino's
presidency marked a critical turning point for the Philippines,
as she focused on restoring democracy, human rights, and
the rule of law. She repealed oppressive laws, released
political prisoners, and promoted a more open and inclusive
political environment.
Contributions
Land Reform: Aquino was committed to addressing the
deep-seated issues of agrarian reform in the Philippines. Her
administration implemented the Comprehensive Agrarian
Reform Program (CARP), which aimed to redistribute land to
landless farmers and promote rural development. Although
the implementation faced challenges and limitations, it was
an important step toward addressing historical land
inequalities.
Contributions
On August 8, 1988, Corazon Aquino created the Presidential
Task Force for Science and Technology which came up with
the first Science and Technology Master Plan or STMP. The
goal of STMP was for the Philippines to achieve newly
industrialized country status by the year 2000.
