I'm Brittney Russell, and I have been coaching in the sports, fitness, and
strength industry for over 20 years. As a lifelong competitive athlete and gym
rat along with being a coaching professional, one of my dreams in life was to
open a gym where I could train clients to reach their fitness and strength goals.

My dream of becoming a gym owner came to fruition in 2013 as I opened a

CrossFit gym. At the same time that I received the keys to open my gym, I
completed a program in Sport and Performance Psychology and earned my
master's degree.

The intent in earning a degree in sport psychology was to one day work with
world class athletes and help them channel their mental strength to tap into
their potential and reach peak levels of performance, but the rigors of owning
a gym would soon take over my time. The vision of working as a world-renowned
sport psych pro still lived in my dreams, but would need to wait for another
season.

In November 2021, I decided to take the leap, close my gym permanently and go
all in. I accepted a full-time position in the field of performance psychology
with a military contracting company in Texas. I was going to help soldiers

because they have never really expressed them aloud.
When I began contemplating the prospect of working with
a world champion powerlifter as her mental skills coach,
it was anxiety producing. Was I ready ? And was she really ready ?
Would Lya be open to mental skills training and the real work involved ?

It reminded me of when I first opened

my gym, my dad gave me a sign that read,

“if your dreams don’t scare you,

they’re not big enough.”

I sent Jason an email

that I would absolutely work with Lya.
He e-introduced the two of us,
and one month later, we started
our coaching sessions.

WHAT IS YOUR WHY ? WHAT IS YOUR VISION ?
WHAT ARE YOUR VALUES ?

These are simple questions that I like to ask clients once I begin
working with them. I want to point out that simple does not mean
easy. During my tenure as a coach, I have asked these questions
countless times, and it never fails to stump almost every athlete
that I’ve posed these questions to, including Lya.

Much of the reason for my questions isn’t to stump anyone, but

rather to get them to think a bit deeper as to why they do what
they do and what they stand for. Defining and identifying your
vision, your why, and your values can be your biggest assets when

Achieving peak performance and reaching the upper limits of your

potential begins with a vision. A dream. Talking about our visions
and dreams can feel vulnerable, and many people have a difficult
time articulating the visions and dreams they have for themselves,
because they have never really expressed them aloud.

Typically, athletes want to start by talking about goals that they

have set out to achieve. Goal setting is a great step towards
reaching achievement, and there is nothing wrong with identifying
goals. Most athletes and performers alike know how to set goals and
have found success with goal setting alone, so it is comfortable
and familiar. I am not interested in comfort. I’m interested in peak
performance & personal excellence. I’m here to challenge you,
push you & help you reach your upper limits of potential which
isn’t comfortable but it is authentic.

Hey, I'm Prescillia Bavoil, but everyone knows me as Lya.

I'm an elite powerlifter, two-time World Champion, and have

broken several squat, deadlift, and total world records in the 63
and 69 kg weight classes in the IPF (International Powerlifting
Federation).

I went to the gym for the first time when I was 22 years old.
My goal at that time was to lose weight and look like a fitness
model until a coach found out about my strength potential and told
me about powerlifting. I immediately fell in love with the sport.

Before I ever won a national title, I already knew I wanted to be a

In early 2022, I wanted to work with a

professional to upgrade my potential and
break some barriers.

Brittney has been recommended to me as a

Mental Skills Coach.

Since then, working together has been a

game-changer.

As an elite athlete, I often get questions like “How are you so
strong”? How do you overcome failure? How do you stay motivated?
How do you prepare for big lifts? How do you deal with stress?

SO MANY QUESTIONS...

It made me realize that many athletes don’t really know much about
the mental preparation I believe is a huge component of
performance in all its forms. There is a false belief it’s only
reserved to the elite athletes. This is not true. It’s for everyone
and anyone who wants to access their full potential.

It can be done anytime and anywhere, whatever your goals are. As

you optimize your sleep, nutrition, training, and lifting form, you
can optimize your mental skills. Think about it... Your brain is

Before you start, I want to tell you something. The following

exercises won’t be easy. They might make you feel uncomfortable
and push you beyond your limits. Some questions will be easier to
answer than others. It’s even possible that for some of them, you
won’t have the answer right away, and that’s okay.

Take your time to really think about it, and we’ll help you through
the process. But there is one thing you have to promise: always be
100% honest with yourself, even when the reality might be hard to
face. There is no place for shame or ego here. It’s only by
embracing your vulnerability and every part of you that you can
begin this work.

VISION
"THE ONLY THING WORSE THAN BEING BLIND IS HAVING SIGHT BUT NO VISION"

The term "VISION" is not only the physical act of seeing

but also the mental ability to conceive something in the
future.

A VISION is not just a dream, it goes beyond just setting

goals. It's a powerful detailed picture of what you
envision for yourself, the kind of athlete you aspire to be
and your journey in the sports arena.

Finding your vision will help you to tap into your deepest
motivations, instilling a sense of purpose and
determination that will fill your training, performance,
and overall approach in the sport.

It is like a mental roadmap that guides you toward your

destination, influencing your decisions, actions and
mindset.

My why :

I would like to share with you my 'why.'

When I'm asked about it, I often stay on the surface,

not delving into the details. However, my 'why' is
much deeper than simply going to the gym one day to
lose some weight, catch the eye of a coach and wish
to become a world champion .

Powerlifting saved my life.

At that time, I was struggling with myself physically,

mentally, and emotionally. Throughout my childhood
and adolescence, I was a victim of bullying because
of my differences and autistic traits. Between self-
harm and suicide attempts, strength gave me a
reason to fight for life.

I believed I had no worth or place in this world. Deep

wounds that kept haunting me until powerlifting came
to heal them, slowly allowing time to mend them.

Powerlifting made me feel strong for all the times I

was weak and let others crush me under the weight
of their taunts and blows. I regained self-esteem
that had been shattered by insults. A confidence in
others even though the fear of them hurting me again
haunted me. I exorcised my pains to finally feel joy,
pride, and happiness. I learned to love myself, love
my body, and love life.

That's my 'why.' So, what's yours?

WHAT IS YOUR VISION ?

VISION IS NOT ONLY ABOUT SETTING AND ACHIEVING GOALS. IT GOES BEYOND THAT. IT'S ABOUT
THE PERSON & THE ATHLETE YOU ASPIRE TO BECOME THROUGHOUT YOUR JOURNEY IN THE
SPORT. IT'S ABOUT THE TRANSFORMATION, GROWTH, AND THE LASTING LEGACY YOU AIM TO
CREATE.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACHIEVE BEFORE YOU RETIRE ?

What specific personal goals do you aim to achieve in powerlifting, both short-term and

THIS WILL BE YOUR GUIDING LIGHT, HELPING YOU NAVIGATE

CHALLENGES, STAY COMMITTED TO YOUR ASPIRATIONS, AND
INSPIRE OTHERS ALONG THE WAY. IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT
LIFTING WEIGHTS.IT'S ABOUT THE TRANSFORMATION, GROWTH,
AND THE LASTING LEGACY YOU AIM TO CREATE.

My vision :

When I started powerlifting, I hadn't even competed once that

I was already saying, 'One day, I'll be a world champion.'

In reality, it made no sense. I had never been athletic in my

life. My thing was books, music, history. Yet, powerlifting
was such a thunderbolt of passion that I wanted to aim for
the highest without even knowing if it was possible. The
seasoned athletes looked at me askance and said, 'If you
manage to make it to the third-place podium in France, that
will already be good.'

But, do you know the difference between a dream and a

vision? Taking action.

I went from zero sports to 3, then 4, then 5 training sessions

a week. I educated myself about powerlifting, training
methods, nutrition, anatomy, biomechanics... A year later, I
won my first national title and made my first appearances on
the international stage until, after the COVID pandemic, in
2021, I clinched my first world title. It took 6 years.

Beyond the titles, what I love about this journey is the

person, the woman, and the athlete I have become. I love
inspiring and showing what our bodies are capable of to
challenge social norms and defy preconceived notions.
Conveying values such as the love of effort, perseverance,
and resilience. Embracing vulnerability to turn failures into
strength. Meditating to draw lessons from every experience.

So, when I was asked, 'How do you want to be remembered?'

I replied, 'like a good person.'"

That’s my “vision”, So what’s yours ?

WHAT ARE YOUR VALUES ?

YOUR VALUES ACT AS YOUR PERSONAL COMPASS, GUIDING YOUR ACTIONS AND REACTIONS TO LIFE EVENTS. WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU VALUE AND
WHAT YOU STAND FOR, YOU CAN GAIN MORE INSIGHT INTO WHY YOU DO WHAT YOU DO. HAVING THIS UNDERSTANDING PROVIDES YOU TO CONTROL
AND CHOOSE WHICH DIRECTION TO TAKE IN LIFE THAT ALIGNS WITH YOUR GOALS AND FEELS THE MOST AUTHENTIC.

BELOW ARE SOME COMMON VALUES, SELECT 6 OF THEM THAT RESONATE THE MOST IN YOU :
THIS IS A NON-EXHAUSTIVE LIST. IF YOU THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD IT!

CONSISTENCY TRUST AMBITION

RESILIENCE INDEPENDANCE PRIDE
HARD WORK HONESTY COMPETITIVENESS
LOVE HUMILITY FORGIVENESS
LEADERSHIP COURAGE INTEGRITY
GRATITUDE FAITH KNOWLEDGE
PERSEVERANCE AUTHENTICITY FAIRPLAY
GENEROSITY TOLERANCE LOYALTY
PATIENCE COMMITMENT EXCELLENCE

COMPASSION TEAMWORK DISCIPLINE

RESPECT KINDNESS FAMILY
OPEN-MINDEDNESS WISDOM SELF-AWARENESS

REMINDER : VALUES ARE NOT MEANT TO BE JUDGED. THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG, AND NO ONE IS BETTER THAN ANOTHER.
THESE VALUES ARE PERSONAL AND UNIQUE TO EACH INDIVIDUAL. WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT, AND THAT'S PERFECTLY OK.

IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONLY 3 OF THOSE 6 VALUES IN THE SPORT, WHICH WOULD THEY BE?

My values:

LOVE : the deepest and most inexplicable feeling

that unveils the darkest and the finest of a person.
It exposes vulnerability and births compassion,
empathy, forgiveness. So many countless other
profound emotions. Without love, life lacks its
essence and vitality. Love has an extraordinary
power. It's the emotion that defies boundaries,
transcends words, people & actions.

HARD WORK : the resilience to overcome obstacles,

the dedication to self-improvement, and the belief in
the transformative power of effort. Hard work
embodies the pursuit of excellence, the drive to
make a meaningful impact, and the fulfillment found
in pushing limits. It's a testament of a relentless
spirit who understand that the path to success is not
an easy one & need sacrifice.

INTEGRITY : The adherence to moral principles. It

signifies ethical and transparent conduct, even when
no one is watching. Honesty & consistency in actions
and words. It's a testament of sincerity and dignity
even in the face of adversity.

Those are my 'values.' So, what are yours?
