Archivo RCA, which mainly exploits the masters in the RCA

Victor 1950s back catalogue, is the first label of Euro Records.
Much of this material is available for the first time ever on CD and most of it has been remastered from
original master tapes - the sound fidelity is simply impeccable.

Among the highlights: your opportunity to complete your 24 track discography of Di Sarli's 1950s
instrumentals on RCA-Victor, and 3 further CDs of Di Sarli's vocal numbers from this period; a CD of
D'Arienzo milongas, and all of Troilo's milongas and valses from the 1940s gathered onto a single CD; and a
wonderful disc of the orchestra of accordion virtuoso Feliciano Brunelli.

Osvaldo Pugliese - El Eslabón Perdido

An incredible rarity! The first 12 tracks are Pugliese's lost LP on Stentor from 1960. The remaining three, with very
poor fidelity, were recorded in 1948 for the film Mis Cinco Hijos (My Five Children) directed by Oreste Caviglia
and Bernardo Spolianskyare. These recordings don't appear in the Pugliese discography, and singer Mario Alonso
never recorded with Pugliese.

Having said all that - this CD is mainly for collectors.

This CD received gushing reviews in Argentina and it's easy to see why. Great players, great arrangements by
Argentino Galván (Troilo's principle arranger), great fidelity, and none of it ever before issued on CD. The
instrumental numbers, 11 out of the 24, mark one of the summits in the history of the instrumental tango, although
for the dancer they are less compelling than the work of Quinteto Reál, of which Francini would be a member. Great
work, although not always for dancing.

This retrospective of the career of Roberto Rufino is a must, if only for the great transfer of the hard to find
Milonga del sentimiento, an astonishing milonga in which Di Sarli lets rip on the piano in a manner remiscent
of Orlando Goñi's tour de force on Troilo's 1941 recording Del Tiempo Guapo.

Feliciano Brunelli 1939-1951

In case you thought that the tango obsessed Argentines of the golden age had no sense of humour, just listen to this
fantastic re-issue of the Argentine accordionist Feliciano Brunelli.

Brunelli was a musician of the very highest quality who played alongside Troilo and Vardaro in the excellent
Cuarteto del 900. Here Brunelli follows the repertoire of an Orquesta Caracteristica such as that of Enrique
Rodriguez - foxtrots, valses, pasodobles, marchas and so on - but with the much lighter sound of the accordion, with
jazz guitar and the occasional flute or even trumpet thrown in for good measure. Tremendous fun - one of the best
new releases in years.

Apart from the obligatory La Cumparsita, the only tango on this cd, you won't recognise most of these tunes,
except perhaps España Cañi, the most famous pasodoble of all time.

The D'Arienzo of the 1950s veered dangerously between genius and vulgarity, and listening to him navigate these
two poles forms part of the fascination of this new cd. Will he pull off another instrumental masterpiece or steer it
into a swamp? Listen for yourself, especially to the irresistible curiousity of two tracks with refined soprano
Libertad Lamarque. Most of the other tracks feature Armando Laborde, with just a couple from Alberto Echagüe.
Not D'Arienzo at his very best. Fulvio Salamanca is the pianist.

Carlos Di Sarli y Sus Cantores 1954-1958

This is a sensational CD which is going to change many people's opinion about the quality of Di Sarli's output with
his vocalists towards the end of his career. We've always preferred the instrumental numbers and for dancing, yes,
their greater spaciousness does give them the edge over the vocal numbers. In fact for Di Sarli fans who already
have the RCA Victor 100 Años Di Sarli cd this CD is worth buying just for the three instrumentals it gives us from
his mid 50s output: Don José María, Tinta Verde and Bar Exposición.

But the vocal numbers on this CD are just wonderful. The baritone voice of Jorge Durán, so well suited to the Di
Sarli sound of the late 40s, has too dense a texture for the lighter, more spacious sound of the mid 50s, and it is the
soaring, expressive tenor voices of Roberto Florio and especially Mario Pomar which have the best fit. You can even
dance to these numbers - there is nothing like the histrionic ending which spoils Roberto Florio's Buenos Aires

Enough already. Buy this CD.

Gobbi's was one of the best orchestras of the 1950s. As ever, the most danceable tracks are the instrumentals, of
which there are only six on this album: Si Sos Brujo, Fraternal, La última curda, Camandulaje, Entrador

Roberto Caló y Sus Cantores 1956/1958

Roberto Caló was one of the seven brothers Caló, of whom the most famous was of course Miguel Caló. Roberto
sang in his orchestra between 1938 and 1940. Then he formed an orchestra with his brother Juan until in the
middle of the decade he formed his own orchestra.

This CD contains all the recordings he made on the RCA-Victor label. Many of these transition era recordings were
big hits at the time, but today they sound rather melodramatic.

Sassone is at his best in his instrumentals and there are only half a dozen on this cd, but El relámpago

Miguel Caló y su Orquesta de Las Estrellas

In 1963 Caló reformed his famous Orquesta de Las Estrellas. Times were bad for tango and Caló was able to gather
together nearly all the old names. This disc is a transfer of recordings made live from radio broadcasts on LR1 and
LR3 (not studio tapes). The announcers sound as though they are declaiming epic poems rather than introducing
the next track. It's all very charming but the fidelity is really poor - much worse than the '40s versions. Given their
access to the vaults, this CD is a disappointment.

The first 13 tracks on this CD belong to the Orquesta Ases del Tango, an outfit formed at the end of 1957
following the breakup of Héctor Varela's orchestra. The disc is filled out with 6 tracks of Alberto Marino - four with
the guitars of Roberto Grela - and a bonus track from Raúl Lavié.

Euro Records continue to work their way through Di Sarli's 79 tracks on RCA's vaults (80 if you count the alternate
version of Fumando Espero with Roberto Florio). They claim they complete it with this CD, but I think they've
missed a couple. Nevertheless, brilliant stuff - listen especially to the vals Sueño de juventud, which is ten times
cleaner than the 1952 version.
