MARITIME HELICOPTER OPERATIONS

1. Introduction. Maritime helicopter operations and procedures are in Ref A. Helicopters


operating from the flight deck of ships are required to coordinate with e xe r c is e aircraft for
de-confliction. This appendix covers matters that are of direct concern to helicopter operators.

2. Organic Helicopter Tasking. Organic helicopter tasking will be the responsibility of


the Helicopter Element Coordinator (HEC) (HMNZS TE MANA). The HEC is to promulgate
a Daily Operational Tasking Air Helo (DOTAH) to the Combat Plans Division (CPD), through
the Maritime Liaison Watch-keeper, 72 to 48 hours prior to the first mission. In turn, CPD
will promulgate organic helicopter operations through an ATO and ATO deviations. HEC
duties will be assigned by CTG 657.1. Maritime Liaison Officer PLANS will be responsible
for including organic Helo tasking into the ATO.

3. Separation. During ADEX serials, positive strike clearance and procedures for
attack/strike operations will be practiced. No organic helicopters are to take off during
ADEX serials. Adherence to the height block/area deconfliction in areas QE and QD is
required for safe separation as directed in the ATO, Annex K or as directed by OSPREY Safety
during ADEX windows.

4. Helo Ops not included in the SOE (including MEDEVAC) or standby SAR Helo that
are on task for any emergencies must notify the CJOC of their intended flight details as soon
as possible. The crew is to file an ATC flight plan noting in item 18: ‘Rank/Exercise BL23
Participant’. Requests to operate helicopters on non-exercise tasks within exercise airspace
are to be directed to the CJOC OPS (Airspace Cell) through the Maritime Watch keeper in
the first instance for EXCON awareness and approval.

5. Aircraft Lights. Organic helicopters operating outside of Ship Safety Zones are to
operate with navigation and anti-collision lights on.

6. The details required for unscheduled maritime helicopter flights into FPDA airbase,
e.g., PLAB are:

a. Aerodrome Details. The details can be extracted from

b. Critical Flight Data required:

(1) Callsign.

(2) Transponder Code.

(3) Intention of flight.

(4) Route of Flight.

(5) Destination Aerodrome.

NOTE: The unscheduled maritime helicopter flight may be rejected if the above information
is not provided through SOC at least 1 hour prior to take off.
