EPDM

RUBBER

1
Construction units of EPDM
The actual abbreviation EPDM conforms to the ASTM nomenclature guidelines as
Ethylene Propylene Diene PolyMethylene.

Ethylene Propylene

2
Construction units of EPDM
Dienes are used in the production of the EPDM

1,4-Hexadiene
(Not in commercial production of
EPDM grades anymore)
Dicyclopentadiene DCPD

Vinyl norbornene (VNB)

Ethylidene norbornene (ENB)

3
Production of EPDM
EPDM is produced in a continuous process, by means of a solution
polymerization technique.

It is made using the Ziegler Natta catalysis method.

4
Properties of EPDM
~ The properties of the EPDM depends on the composition of ETHYLENE, PROPYLENE
percentage.

~ The cure rate depends on the percentage of the Diene content and as well as the Diene type.

~ Very good heat, weather, and ozone resistance.

~ Good resistance to Steam, polar substances, acids and alkalines

~ Excellent insulation properties for the low/Medium voltage range.

5
BENEFITS OF EPDM
~ Resistance to UV exposure, ozone, aging, weathering, and many chemicals - great for outdoor
applications.

~ Stability in high and low temperatures.

~ Very high alkali and acid resistance.

~ Resistance to steam and water.

~ Used in the production of extruded rubber or molded rubber products.

~ Used in the proper environment, the parts will work well and last long without breaking down,
becoming brittle, etc.

~ Less expensive than silicone, with similar properties.

6
SILICONE VS EPDM
~ EPDM is a high density synthetic rubber that is extremely versatile with an ability to withstand
high temperatures (up to 215 ˚C). Because of this versatility, it is widely used in automobile.

Some key properties of EPDM

~ Strong acid and Alkali resistance.
~ High temperature resistance up to 215 ˚C
~ Excellent weathering resistance
~ Tensile range of 500-2500 psi

7
SILICONE VS EPDM
~ Silicone is a generally non-reactive, flexible rubber that has interesting properties which make
it a widely used material in a number of different industries. Silicone has a high temperature
resistance of up to 315˚C and great flame retardant properties. This makes it ideal for
Engineering and Automotive companies.
Some key properties of Silicone
~ High temperature resistance of up to 315 ˚C
~ Good flame retardant properties
~ Tensile range of 200-1500 psi
~ Excellent weathering properties

8
CHOOSING BETWEEN EPDM AND SILICONE
~ There are multiple factors you should consider to ensure you’re making the best choice for
your desired application.
For example, you must consider if the material is going to be used outside, then it must have
good weathering properties. However, Silicone doesn’t have good acid and alkali resistance,
meaning that if it rains the rubber would be damaged.
Other factors you need to take in to consideration are:
~ Strength of the material
~ Flexibility
~ Overall costing
~ Resistant properties (chemical, heat, weather, etc.)
~ Weight
