WORM

INFESTATION
Roundworm
Roundworm is the parasite found in small intestine of the human body. It
is called ascariasis lumbricoid.
It’s length is 20-25cm.
It is mostly occurred in children.

Host – humans, cattle, pigs.

Mode of transmission
 Drinking unboiled water
 Eating raw and unwashed fruits and vegitables or wash in infected
water.
 Children plying in mud
 Tauching food with infected hand
Clinical Features
 Abdominal pain, loose stool and vomiting
 Anorexia
 Irritability
 Enlarged abdomen
 Weight loss
 Fever
 Malnutrition
 Weakness
Treatment
 Albendazole 400 mg Od for above 2yrs children
 Albendazole 200 mg OD for 1-2 years child
 Mebendazole 100mg BD for three days
Prevention
 Treat all the infected persons
 Awareness of use of toilet and proper waste
didposal
 Wash hands before meals and before preparing
food
 Donot allow children to play in soil
 Wash all kind of fruits and vegetables
Hookworm
Hookworns are the parasites that have hooks to
attach themselves to the wall of the intestine and
suck blood.
It is also called necator americanus.
They live in the upper part of the intestine

Mode of transmission – walk or work with barefoot.


Signs and symptoms
 mild to severe anemia
 Pale
 Easily tired
 Swelling of feet
 Malnutrition
 Itching and burning sensation in the area of infestation

Treatment – same as roundworm


Prevention
Promptly treat infected person
Teach people to use toilet
Wear shoes especially children
Awareness about the parasite
Thread worm
It is the small white worm which live in large
intestine and rectum
It looks like white thread

Mode of transmission – infected food and


fringers
Signs and symptoms
 Nocturnal anal itching
 Abdominal pain and distension
 nausea and vomiting
 Irritability and sleeplessness
 Skin irritation and sometimes vaginitis
 Large, pale stools, with mucous

Prevention – same as roundworn + local antiallergic ointments


Trichuriasis/Whipworm
It is the parasitic infection of the human large
intestine caused by trichuristrichiura
It is mostly caused in children
It is also known as whipworm

Mode of transmission – infected food and water


and soil
Signs and symptoms
 Nervousness
 Irritability
 Abdominal swelling
 Vomiting
 Headache
 Insomina
 Painfull and frequent stool
 Unexpected weight loss
 Abdominal pain
 Tiredness, weakness, and dehydration
 Poor physical development in children
 Nutritional deficiency in children
Investigation – stool test, blood test

Treatment - same as roundworm

Prevention
 Treat the infectious person
 Wash hands frequently
 Stop children to play in soil
 Eat well cooked food
 Drink clean and safe water
Tapeworm
It is the long and flat parasite looks like white tape

Types
 Taenia saginata ( beef tapeworm)
 Taenia solium ( pork tapeworm)

mode of transmission- raw or partly cooked meat


Signs and symptoms
Nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea
Insomnia
Anorexia
Weight loss
Worm are seen in stool
Neurocysticercosis- most common parasitic infection
in CNS and may occur seizure
Treatment
Niclosamide – 50 mg/kg body weight
Praziquantel – 10 mg/kg single dose
For neurocysticerosis- anticonvulsant drugs like
eptoin
albendazole 15 mg/kg/day
BD for 30 days
praziquantel 50 mg/kg/day
TDS for 30 days
Prevention
Treat all infected persons
Use toilet
Eat well cooked meat
Maintain environmental sanitation
Proper disposal of waste
Awareness of tapeworm
