Week 2: Elements and Chemical Symbols
Memory Text: “He hath made His wonderful works to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.”
- Psalm 111:4
Concepts (Generalization)
Matter can be classified as pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances can be further classified into
elements and compounds. A substance with the same fixed composition and properties is called a pure
substance.
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down further either by physical or chemical means. It
is made up of only one kind of atom.
Each element's atoms are unique to that element. So if there are two elements, X and Y, then these two
would have different types of atoms.
ELEMENTS
The simplest form of matter.
Considered as the building blocks of matter because all forms of matter are made up of elements.
Of the 118 known elements, about 90 occur naturally on Earth and 28 are synthesized or made in
laboratory. About 30 elements play an important role in our daily life.
CHEMICAL SYMBOL
Jöns Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848)
A Swedish chemist proposed that an element be represented by one or two letters of by chemical
symbol.
The first letter is always capitalized while the second letter is in lower case.
Examples:
C – carbon
H – hydrogen
Co – cobalt
Au – gold
The chemical symbols of some elements come from their Latin names.
Examples:
Na – sodium – natrium (Latin word)
Fe – iron – ferrum (Latin word)
Some elements are named after places.
Examples:
Am (americium) from America
Bk (berkelium) from the city of Berkeley
Four elements were named after the planets.
Examples:
Np (neptunium) from Neptune
Some elements are named famous scientist.
Examples:
Es (einsteinium) from Albert Einstein
Lr (lawrencium) from Ernest Lawrence
