Week 2: Elements and Chemical Symbols
Memory Text: “He hath made His wonderful works to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.”
- Psalm 111:4

Enabling Outcomes: (MELC)

Based on the curriculum guide (CG), the student should be able to:
a. Recognize that substances are classified into elements and compounds.

Concepts (Generalization)
Matter can be classified as pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances can be further classified into
elements and compounds. A substance with the same fixed composition and properties is called a pure
substance.
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down further either by physical or chemical means. It
is made up of only one kind of atom.
Each element's atoms are unique to that element. So if there are two elements, X and Y, then these two
would have different types of atoms.

ELEMENTS
 The simplest form of matter.
 Considered as the building blocks of matter because all forms of matter are made up of elements.
 Of the 118 known elements, about 90 occur naturally on Earth and 28 are synthesized or made in
laboratory. About 30 elements play an important role in our daily life.

Biologically Important Elements in the Human Body

Percentage of Body
Element Usage
Weight
It is the most important element in the human
body, present in water and other compounds that
65% oxygen
make up tissues. It is also found in blood and
lungs due to respiration.
It is found in every organic molecule of our body
18.6% carbon as well as the waste product of respiration. It is
ingested in the food that we eat.
It is found in all water molecules in the body as
9.7% hydrogen well as many other compounds making up
different tissues.
It is the primary component of the skeletal
1.8% calcium system and the teeth. It is also found in the
nervous system, muscles, and the blood.

Weight
It is common in the bones and teeth. It is needed
1.0% phosphorous by the body for protein growth, maintenance, and
repair of cells and tissues.
It regulates heart beat and plays an important role
0.4% potassium
in digestive and muscular functions.
It is needed for muscle constructions and nerve
0.22% sodium transmission maintaining pH balance and
hydration but it is excreted in the form of sweat.
It is a major mineral nutrient that occurs
0.2% chlorine
primarily in body fluids.
It binds to ATP and nucleotides and used also to
0.06% magnesium
build healthy bones and teeth.
It is present in many amino acids which are used
0.04% sulfur
to build proteins.
It is found mostly in blood needed by the body to
0.007% iron
make the oxygen-carrying protein, hemoglobin.
It is found in certain hormones in the thyroid
0.0002% iodine gland that control the body’s metabolism and
other functions.

CHEMICAL SYMBOL
Jöns Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848)
 A Swedish chemist proposed that an element be represented by one or two letters of by chemical
symbol.
 The first letter is always capitalized while the second letter is in lower case.
Examples:
C – carbon
H – hydrogen
Co – cobalt
Au – gold
 The chemical symbols of some elements come from their Latin names.
Examples:
Na – sodium – natrium (Latin word)
Fe – iron – ferrum (Latin word)
 Some elements are named after places.
Examples:
Am (americium) from America
Bk (berkelium) from the city of Berkeley
 Four elements were named after the planets.
Examples:
Np (neptunium) from Neptune
 Some elements are named famous scientist.
Examples:
Es (einsteinium) from Albert Einstein
Lr (lawrencium) from Ernest Lawrence
