Editor’s Letter
The Power of Sisterhood
There’s no escaping a buzzword, isn’t it? At one point we were all about
‘thinking outside the box’, keeping tabs on ‘big data’, or just planning how
we can ‘pivot’. In a post-COVID world, where we braced for the ‘new
normal’ (had to do that), the universal ‘smarketing’ trick was to introduce
‘sustainability’ at any given chance, even when there was greenwashing—
well, what better way to attract people who were seriously rethinking their
lifestyle choices to prevent negative environmental impact. A word that has
stood the test of time on the buzzword list is ‘sisterhood’. At Cosmopolitan
India, we value the power of community and sisterhood—you’ve seen that
time and again, especially with our storytelling. While this is a theme that
runs through all our issues, this time, we decided to double down and focus
on what sisterhood can mean in the business of fashion and beauty. With our
third Cosmo Meet-Up, we brought together a bunch of women under one
roof, as they exchanged notes on building a brand in these spaces. The
memo was simple: the world can tell us that the competitive, cut-throat
industry of fashion is all about ‘you can’t sit with us’ but well, some of us ain’t
buying it! We are going to get a seat at the table, and rightfully so, because
we believe in (and love) what we do. And as we take that place, we’re also
going to save a seat (well...seats) for the women who are as passionate about
their work. These 59 female founders exchanged notes on their mistakes,
learnings, and more, so the journey becomes easier for others. Now, if that’s
not sisterhood...we don’t know what is!

While on this subject, there’s no way we can forget our individual selves,
and the solo journeys we are on. Our cover star Shanaya Kapoor (this is her
FIRST cover ever!) reveals that her mantra is to keep her eyes on her own
goals and not on what others are doing. Most importantly, she’s her biggest
competition, and her biggest cheerleader. And that’s exactly what the
Cosmo girl is about—confident and comfortable
in her own skin.

sually, you’ll find my social media searches full of interior
design inspo and commentary from dog behaviour experts.
But lately, I can’t hop on Instagram (or anywhere else,
really) without seeing slideshows of old English manors,
tennis whites, Ivy League campuses, pearl necklaces, and way too much
Aperol spritz. All of it stickered with the hashtags #StealthWealth,
#QuietLuxury, and especially #OldMoney and #OldMoneyAesthetic.
Yes, it is an ode to the lush lifestyle that comes from having
generational cash (new money is not welcome here) and all the
matching sets, sleek tailoring, and polished accessories that entails. The
whole thing, with its understated neutral palette, is undeniably chic—
and currently trending on most social media platforms.
I was going to say an obsession with the über-rich is a surprise in
2023, but then I took a look at the other recent internet aesthetics that
have made a name for themselves:

Listen, aspiring to Succession levels of assets isn’t wrong. I, too, like to

I doubt we’ll ever truly be able to escape the shimmering allure of
elitism as a society. But at least Gen Zers have one built-in defense:
They’re usually over something almost as soon as it begins, leaving lots
of room for future viral fashion personas that don’t need Daddy’s

“In a world where trends come and go, I
have always felt that a short black dress is
timeless. I chose this classic black Keoo
dress because it is not your typical LBD. It
strikes the perfect balance between being
edgy and classic. The cool shape makes
the pockets pop in the most unique way
and the collar adds that perfect element
of class. To top it all, it is extremely
comfortable—I could wear to dinner,
brunch, or even a formal event. I feel this
dress is special because it brings two
worlds together—it has the glam quotient
you’re looking for and the fabric is Indian.
It’s a dress that makes me feel like me! I’ve

the attention to detail that makes
their designs stand out. I love
how they cater to everyone from

outfit that’s minimal yet bold and
this low back, sexy black number
defines my effortless style, my

A short black dress can be so

Is Sparkling Water

We asked the experts...

SO, IS SPARKLING WATER

HEALTHY?
Fizzy drinks are mainly considered
unhealthy because of their sugar
content. But researchers from Palestine’s
Birzeit University wanted to find out
whether it was actually due to the gasses
in the drink rather than the sugar.
In the study, they gave rats tap water,
flat water, ordinary soda, and diet
sugar-free soda. The scientists, who
published their study in the
journal Obesity Research and Clinical
Practice, found that when they gave
rats fizzy drinks over water they gained
weight at a faster rate. This weight gain
was because the rat’s levels of the
hormone that controls hunger, called
ghrelin, was elevated.
The researchers then looked at 20
young men to see if the same findings

as they found in the rats could apply.

They found that the men also had
higher levels of the ghrelin hormone.

I live with this for another year and a half?' Depending
on what’s on your list, you might realise that you can

Ask yourself, 'Can I find But if it feels too daunting and you know you just can’t,

someplace else?' Now, the pros. It is great that you’re making more
money than you ever have! But what other perks
are there? Are you learning skills you can use in the
future? Are the company’s healthcare benefits really
freaking good? For each positive, ask yourself, 'Can
I find this someplace else?' If the answer is yes, keep
applying for openings. It might take some time, but if
you have identified enough positives, you can try to be
a little patient.
For some faster relief, ask: 'Is there anything you can
solve by advocating for yourself?' For example, the fact
that your manager acknowledges your efforts makes
me wonder if she’s just unaware of how she comes
across. A lot of the time, bosses with this behaviour are
dealing with some sort of inner conflict, like anxiety
or insecurity. To cope with the pressure they’re under,
they nitpick their teams. It’s not fair and it does feel
crappy, but it has more to do with them than you—so
try not to take it personally. Having a conversation with
her about her management style and how it makes you
feel might alleviate some stress.
Set up a meeting with her and start by saying, “You
say I’m a hard worker, and I really appreciate that, but
I feel a lack of trust when you manage me so closely.
I am hoping there’s something we can do to resolve
this that will be comfortable for both of us.” These
conversations aren’t easy, but if you don’t speak up,
she won’t know that she’s making work hard for you.
If she’s not responsive, well, you’ll know what to look
out for while you interview for your next gig. You can
ask prospective employers to describe their leadership
styles to see if you’ll mesh.
And onto the office clique: Unfortunately, you can’t
force a relationship with this group. It sounds like you’ve
made a big effort to get to know them, and if it is still
worth it to you, maybe give it another shot. But if you
get the same response, make peace with the fact that
these are people you’ll have surface-level conversations
with—and that’s okay. Accepting these relationships for
what they are could make your life easier for the long
term...or at least until you find a better job. Q

THE TWO-TONE LOOK THAT

NOBODY EXPECTS
Create a perfect canvas by applying a light foundation to the
forehead, cheekbones and chin. When you have it, move on to
the lashes: curl them and put a little specific primer on them.
Use a lighter blue mascara on the inside of the eye and a
darker one on the outside. Combine the two shades in the
central part for an ombré effect.
THE FASHIONABLE EYELINER
The key is choosing the right waterproof eyeliner
with a light gel formula and bright blue pigment. To
make the shape, start at the inner part of the eyelid
and very slowly trace the arc to the opposite corner
of the eye. To finish, make a straight line that
connects it with the tail.

Q What routine can I follow to

reduce pigmentation and
even out my skin tone?
A: Hyperpigmentation is one of the most
common skincare concerns. It is often
caused by sun damage, acne scarring,
ageing, hormonal imbalance, or genetics.
And you’re right...the beauty universe is
brimming with ingredients that claim to work
on hyperpigmentation. However, some of the
ones you can look out for are niacinamide,
vitamin C, azelaic acid, and glycolic acid.
Start with a gel-based cleanser, then a gentle
face wash, followed by a serum. The Clinique

Alice chips in, “As a brand, it is all about learning a trade, a

Talking about the industry at large, Alice concludes, “The

A fascinating fact about coffee that
many people overlook is that espresso

was my mother’s life-long dream and soon it
became my dream too. When I was about 13,
my mother had a health issue, which
prevented her from being able to cook for
us...I entered the kitchen out of necessity. So,
I started cooking food under my mother’s
supervision; what started off as a chore soon

Childhood memories form the basis of our
connection with food—I still crave the food I
ate in my childhood, the vegetables that
needed little seasoning because of their
freshness, the taste of freshly-made pickle
with rice, and the traditional sweets made at
home during festivals. Even today, I enjoy
simple food the most.
My career spanning more than 30 years started
when I joined as a kitchen executive trainee with

generations of a family eating together and relishing the food. When
young people dine at Simply South and come back with their parents

of the restaurant’s food with what they would have eaten in their

Our vision is to be known as the custodians of South Indian cuisine,
and while we took the right step towards that goal nine years ago, now

VANIKA CHOUDHARY,
Chef and owner, Noon
and Sequel
“My first restaurant Sequel was born out
of a desire to radically change my life. I
launched Noon that is a modern Indian
fine-dining restaurant that reimagines
Indian cuisine through ancient practices
with contemporary interpretations.
Before taking the leap and pivoting to
the restaurant industry, I was overcome
by fear of failure and thought I might not
have the courage to bounce back if I did
fail, but these moments that truly shaped
me. This is what I’d like aspiring chefs to
know too—there is no balance, you have
to be driven by your own conviction to
follow it through.
Both my restaurant concepts have
stemmed from a need to spotlight the
intricacies of the farm-to-table
movement in India. Very soon, I think
that we’ll see the spotlight shift to the
farmers themselves. My food philosophy
stems from a desire to retell the story of
our ancestors and what they learned
through foraging and other processes.
There is much to learn from what our
predecessors ate—it’s a culture that we
can’t afford to lose, and I want to
preserve it for future generations. India
is so diverse, but our understanding of
the cuisine is quite limited and
generic—I think that over the years there
will be a growing awareness towards
micro cuisines. We are a country that’s
blessed with diverse culinary traditions
and we need to do more to preserve this
wisdom. This principle is integral to what
we are doing at Noon, as we strive to
create a movement that is dedicated to
moving forward while cherishing what
has been passed down through
generations.” Q
